Perched at the edge of eroding sandstone bluffs above Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, where the Pacific crashes against ochre cliffs that have been retreating for millennia, Alila Marea Beach Resort makes the most audacious possible argument for building at the California coastal edge. Designed by MVE Architects and opened in 2021, the four-story structure pairs board-formed concrete walls — their texture echoing the stratified cliff face directly below — with vertical fins of warm corten-toned metal cladding that shift in the coastal light. The aerial views confirm what the entry sequence suggests: this is a building conceived as a cliff-top object, its elongated bar form tracking the bluff line with a pool terrace cut into the promontory at its base. The 130 rooms were conceived by interior design studio BraytonHughes, whose approach favors tactile restraint over coastal cliché. Polished concrete floors, slatted white oak headboards, and oval jute-and-cotton striped rugs in sand and charcoal give the guest rooms an atmosphere closer to a well-edited California house than a resort. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors dissolve each room into its terrace, where generous outdoor seating arrangements make clear that the Pacific view is the primary amenity. At the rooftop restaurant Vaga, visible in the images with its warmly grained timber ceiling and open bar facing the horizon, the same material honesty carries through — polished concrete underfoot, a walnut bar counter, and wire-framed lounge chairs upholstered in coastal blue.

"Lovely resort right on the beach. Food in Vaga restaurant was great. We hired the bikes and went all the way down to Del Mar. Staff are super friendly and helpful. A special shout out to Marty, who gave us some great recommendations of places to go see / eat. Would definitely come back."

"I cannot put into words how AMAZING and healing our time here was! The staff is simply incredible! We travel all over the world and this time decided we wanted to not deal with airports for our anniversary. I'm so happy we found Alila! This goes down in the books as one of our best ever getaways! Let's talk about VAGA the restaurant! This meal with a view was INSANE, farm to table food so fresh, and the best bread and special butter we've ever had! Yoga in the morning with a great instructor beach side, the best way to start the day, and then the SPA... Spa Alila is more than massage experiences, it's healing!!! My husband and I both experienced the enrapture and it has everything and more! Amy, so intuitive and perfect for him, he doesn't easily relax, but she put him at ease right away! Jade, Jade, Jade!! All I can say is thank you for the best experience I've ever had in any country! Truly, we are recharged, rejuvenated, and had a magical 26th wedding anniversary! Thank you to everyone from check in, oh and I can't end this without thanking the security guard on duty! He's kind and on IT!"

"This resort is beautiful. We had a fire pit coastal view studio suite for only one night. To short but we loved it. We would pick the same room again if we could. Bed was super comfortable, room had so many nice touches. All of the staff we encountered went over and above to make our stay special. Food and service at the pocket bar was great. We had dinner at Vaga. Top notch. Couldn’t have asked for better food and service! Front desk management also very accommodating. We will return."
