PB hotel design editorial

Perched at the edge of eroding sandstone bluffs above Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, where the Pacific crashes against ochre cliffs that have been retreating for millennia, Alila Marea Beach Resort makes the most audacious possible argument for building at the California coastal edge. Designed by MVE Architects and opened in 2021, the four-story structure pairs board-formed concrete walls — their texture echoing the stratified cliff face directly below — with vertical fins of warm corten-toned metal cladding that shift in the coastal light. The aerial views confirm what the entry sequence suggests: this is a building conceived as a cliff-top object, its elongated bar form tracking the bluff line with a pool terrace cut into the promontory at its base. The 130 rooms were conceived by interior design studio BraytonHughes, whose approach favors tactile restraint over coastal cliché. Polished concrete floors, slatted white oak headboards, and oval jute-and-cotton striped rugs in sand and charcoal give the guest rooms an atmosphere closer to a well-edited California house than a resort. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors dissolve each room into its terrace, where generous outdoor seating arrangements make clear that the Pacific view is the primary amenity. At the rooftop restaurant Vaga, visible in the images with its warmly grained timber ceiling and open bar facing the horizon, the same material honesty carries through — polished concrete underfoot, a walnut bar counter, and wire-framed lounge chairs upholstered in coastal blue.

"Great amenities, view, and clean hotel. The bed was very comfortable. However, service was not the best at the restaurant and pool."

"The hotel is fantastic, conveniently located. The food at Vaga is good, though it could be improved. The gym is great, and I love the sauna, the pool, and all the amenities. The customer service is exceptional. They go above and beyond to help you."

"We recently stayed at Alila Marea Beach Resort to celebrate my birthday, and unfortunately, the experience fell far short of what I expect from a luxury resort. From the moment we arrived, the staff did not feel warm or welcoming. Despite interacting with multiple employees throughout our stay—and despite my birthday being noted on the reservation—not a single staff member acknowledged it. While a birthday greeting isn't expected, it's a small detail that luxury hotels typically excel at, and its absence reflected the overall lack of personalized hospitality. Traveling with our baby, we requested a crib multiple times. After three separate requests and hours of waiting, no one followed up until nearly 10:00 p.m., when we had to ask yet again. By that point, it had become a frustrating experience that could have easily been avoided with better communication or proactive management. The food and beverage service was also disappointing. Orders were slow to arrive, and they were not always correct. At VAGA, my interaction with the manager was particularly surprising. While I was speaking with her, she kept her eyes on a clipboard, made no eye contact, and simply turned around to signal the hostess with, "Get them what they want." It felt dismissive and impersonal rather than attentive and service-oriented. Throughout our stay, I had the impression that the staff was more focused on enforcing the property's adults-oriented atmosphere than on providing genuine hospitality to the guests standing in front of them. Great luxury service is about making every guest feel seen, valued, and cared for. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. The property itself is beautiful, and the oceanfront setting is stunning. However, beautiful views alone do not create a luxury experience. Hospitality does. Based on our stay, the level of service felt more comparable to an average hotel than a true luxury resort. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, as the property has tremendous potential but the guest experience needs significant improvement."

"We had a lovely time celebrating our anniversary at this hotel. Our room was large and beautifully decorated with comfortable furnishings. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of counter space and one sink. There is a private toilet area also called the water-closet. The walk-in shower has nice features and is on the larger size. The hot water was instant which is always welcomed. There are plenty of drawers and closet space. The room has large windows and sliding glass door to a balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There is a pool area with plenty of comfortable seating and the pool area faces the ocean. We had both dinner and breakfast at the Vaga restaurant and the meals were delicious. The hotel is not directly on the beach, it is on a hill above the beach area which requires one to walk down many steps, then walk on a path to the beach. We did not use the gym or the spa but they are nice additions to the hotel. I definitely recommend this hotel."

"We stayed in the Grandview Room, and the Pacific Ocean views were absolutely beautiful and exactly what we were hoping for. The front desk team was very helpful, and Francisco was especially attentive, assisting us with all of our reservations. Valet service was also smooth and efficient, with the staff staying very on top of things. There were a few drawbacks. The walls were thin, and we could hear our neighbors moving furniture and making noise. One of the automated screens and the fire-pit did not work during our stay, and the cold plunge looked a bit dirty, so we decided not to use it. Overall, this is a great option for a relaxing staycation with stunning ocean views. It is also conveniently located near Carlsbad Village, with great restaurants like Campfire and the Michelin-starred Jeune et Jolie nearby."
