PB hotel design editorial

Stitched together from a historic Romanesque-arched commercial building and a contemporary tower rising above it, the streetscape along Broadway in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter tells the whole story of Alma San Diego before you step through the door. The 2019 property — 173 rooms across roughly 14 floors — preserves the ornamental masonry cornice and arched window bays of the older structure at street level while the new build above it steps back in curtain-wall glass and warm timber cladding, a layered composition that mirrors the neighborhood's own compressed urban history. The ground-floor restaurant wraps the junction between old and new, its interior planted heavily with trailing greenery, dark teal walls, wide-plank oak flooring, and sinuous LED pendant lighting suspended over white-topped communal tables. The guest rooms carry a California-inflected eclecticism — navy upholstered headboards with integrated brass reading lights, Pendleton-adjacent geometric cushions, amber pendant drops, and small-format art prints with a vintage portrait sensibility that gives the spaces personality without demanding attention. Upper-floor rooms open onto generous balconies framing the downtown San Diego skyline, furnished simply with wire bistro chairs in the manner of a private terrace rather than a hotel amenity. The rooftop pool deck is the property's most declarative gesture: a large-scale floral street mural anchors one wall, bold yellow side tables punctuate the lounger rows, and the adjacent San Diego I Love You ghost sign on the neighboring building provides an inadvertent but perfectly pitched backdrop.

"What can we say about our stay at The Alma, except that is was exceptional! Upon arriving, we were met with a lovely charcuterie plate and treats in our room set up by Ana & Lena, who had also upgraded us to a suite (with a Nespresso machine??? Yesss!). The front desk staff were always friendly, including Jorge, Tre, Axel, and, we’re not biased, but Grace is the best (haha, she’s our daughter). Kudos to Ericka for the fabulous coffee and thrift store recs (that we ran out of time for sadly). Miriam did an amazing job keeping our room fresh, she even folded my son’s pj bottoms. 😂 All in all, y’all made our stay memorable in the best way. We can’t wait to book a return!"

"The staff here were nothing short of superb. Grace welcomed me, remembered it was my birthday and sent me to my room with a snack bag and some wine! I was blown away at the level of friendliness and service at the Alma."

"Our group travels on a baseball trip every year. This hotel experience has been the best. The room and views were extraordinary. The room (and hotel) were extremely cleanly and the hospitality of all employees were second to none, friendly and accommodating. As an example, we asked the front desk for some extra towels on our way up to the room. The attendant was at our room before we got there. Everything was nearby and easily accessible by walking. Breakfast in the cafe was sogood we ate there twice. And usually we choose to eat local when our trips. The Avocado toast and french toast were a big hit. I have never written a review before on tripadvisory and felt it necessary for this hotel on this occasion."

"Overnight stay in Downtown SD at the Alma was excellent! Staff is friendly, helpful and the amenities are not lacking. Rooms, restaurant and location is perfect for a night out with a comfortable and quiet room to rest. Pleasantly surprised and pictures don't do the rooms justice as is for the entire property. It's a must see. Modern with a warmth to it and a welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely stay again. Thank you."

"Lovely, clean and welcoming hotel with excellent staff. The hotel itself was great. The only issue for us was the immediate surrounding area. We encountered strong smells of urine, visible drug use, anti-social behaviour and a general feeling of being unsafe, which affected our stay. Interestingly, just a few blocks away the atmosphere seemed noticeably different. If you’re considering staying here, I’d recommend researching the location carefully. The hotel was excellent, but the surrounding environment may not suit all visitors."
