PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Fifth Avenue and Market Street, where the Gaslamp Quarter's Victorian-era streetscape gives way to the broader commercial grid of downtown San Diego, a seven-story Beaux-Arts brick building from the early twentieth century was converted into the Andaz San Diego — Hyatt's design-forward brand given a property that had to reconcile its ornate bones with a thoroughly contemporary interior sensibility. The red canvas awnings and limestone cornice details visible from the street preserve the building's civic presence, while inside, the architects peeled the interiors back to something closer to urban loft than grand hotel. The lobby makes the design argument plainly: massive columns wrapped in herringbone-patterned leather or woven dark hide rise from dark hardwood floors, their bases ringed in orange-backlit platforms that carry an unmistakably early-2010s boutique-hotel energy. Rooms carry the palette through — teal upholstered headboards set against tall walnut wood panels, grey sofa seating, and marble-topped organic-form coffee tables that nod loosely toward mid-century Scandinavian work. The more theatrical suites expose the bathroom entirely behind floor-to-ceiling glass, freestanding soaking tubs positioned alongside boldly patterned mosaic tile walls in cobalt blue and cream. Above it all, the rooftop pool deck, lined with navy loungers and cabana seating in green-striped canvas, opens toward the San Diego skyline — the most straightforwardly Californian gesture in an otherwise deliberately layered property.

"I was here for two nights and everything was great. Super friendly staff, room was precisely what I expected when I booked, and location was super convenient. Really not much more to say except definitely a good choice!"

"We stayed for two nights at the Andaz... it was not worth it. The hotel really needs updating and refreshing. For the amount we paid, the room (King Bed Deluxe) had holes in the black out curtains, the furniture was showing much wear and tear, the room has a musty smell. Lobby and pool furniture had stains on them. In the hotel (not counting STK downstairs), there was essentially only one food option (Rooftop Bar) and the menu was uninspiring. I was expecting more given that this is an Andaz, but it felt like a 3.5 star hotel. Valet parking is $70 a night, perhaps worth it because the surrounding area didn't feel too nice. If you're staying in the Gaslamp district for nighttime activities and want to stay at a somewhat trendy hotel, maybe this hotel can work for you. Otherwise, there may be better options elsewhere at this price point."

"I booked the star suites that has 2 king bunk beds and another bedroom with 1 king. It has 2 bathrooms, a living room and a bar area. From the pictures, I have to admit it looked awesome for my family: 2 girls, my 85 year old parents and my little puppy. We arrive around 4pm and checked in right away. My older daughter was so excited to go onto the top bunk and that's when everything went down hill. There was a huge yellow stain on the bedsheets that my daughter said it was so gross. I called them to come clean and the housekeeping manger came in with 2 other ladies to change the bedsheets. They wore their shoes and stepped all over the bedside tables and ladder that they didnt even bother to wipe down after they finish. Thats when I saw the sofa as well as the carpet also have huge stains everywhere. Not only that, light switches in both bathrooms don't work and the floor is also sticky. The tissue boxes have layers of dusts on them. Basically, this felt like a motel.... and I will never stay there again."

"This was the worst Andaz experience -- Renata was extremely rude and short with us. We were very surprised by this as we are loyal globalists. We will not be returning to this hotel in San Diego and will change over our loyalty to another brand."

"There was an unpleasant smell in our room. We had problems with the toilet and later the shower that were never fixed and those sent to fix it were not very friendly or effective. The rooftop pool is very pretty. The bar on the rooftop is nice but food mediocre. Some of the front desk staff was very friendly but not knowledgeable about tourist type activities in the area."
