PB hotel design editorial

Few American resort complexes carry the institutional weight of the Hotel del Coronado, the 1888 Victorian landmark designed by James and Merritt Reid whose red-conical turrets have presided over this San Diego peninsula beach for well over a century. Beach Village at The Del, the LXR Hotels & Resorts property carved from the resort's lower campus, takes a deliberately different approach — a village of white-painted, red-roofed cottage buildings arrayed along the sand, their low residential massing drawing the eye away from the historic main structure toward the Pacific horizon. The aerial view confirms what the floor plan promises: a compound rather than a tower, organized around a circular pool terrace ringed with navy-and-white striped cabana tents that establish the color story for the entire property. Inside, the rooms settle into a coastal register that feels considered without being precious — cognac leather platform beds, deep-piled navy abstract carpeting, white wainscoted wall paneling with crown molding, and pale oak case goods anchoring the palette in warmth. Bay windows frame Coronado Bay with the kind of unfussy directness that resort rooms rarely manage. The Serea restaurant terrace, furnished with teak banquettes and Carrara marble tabletops beneath a pergola, keeps the 1888 landmark visible in the background — a confident acknowledgment that heritage and contemporary hospitality can share the same stretch of beach without one diminishing the other. The beachside tiki bar, surfboards stacked against weathered timber, tips its hat cheerfully to Coronado's surf culture.

"We love this property! Within walking distance to the town where there are shops, restaurants bars. Beach Village it's self is peaceful and exclusive - we had the pool to ourselves most days, and it was so tranquil. My only suggestion.... improve the menu at Ocean Club. Whilst we love the venue, the menu could use some improvement. Apart from that, thank you always and we will be back!"

"Will the girlies who book all of the travel for you and your husband— and prioritize comfort and location over price— please stand up. If you’re on the fence about booking this, do yourself a favor… and just book it. My husband and I stayed here for three nights in January 2026. We initially booked an oceanfront junior cottage and were not happy with the room as we were assigned the worst room of that room type with limited view and some road noise. However, the staff was super helpful, providing alternate options for us. We ended up in a fairly comparable room and were super comfortable for the duration of our stay. Advice here… don’t ever book the junior and pay up for the best room within your budget. You won’t regret it. Beach Village was our total vibe. Plenty of access to the beach, several pools with cabanas, and hot tubs. As a BV guest, you receive complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas which we used almost everyday. The location of this property is unbeatable, extremely walkable. You are steps away from the “boardwalk” which we enjoyed walking several times along the beach and back to the property. You are close to Orange Ave that has plentiful restaurants, cute shops, and convenience stores. Amazing food and drinks on the property…we really enjoyed the taco shack on the beach, the pizzeria, and of course Nobu. All walkable back to our room with two fireplaces we could get cozy or enjoy the sound of the waves from our deck. We didn’t have much time during our stay to check out other amenities like we normally would (fitness center, spa, experiences, and the pool) so we will be back to either Beach Village or will try out Shore House for another amazing, likely soon, future stay! This is our new happy place!"

"The Del was amazing! It is hands down the best hotel in Coronado. From the room at the beach villas to the restaurants and atmosphere, it was such a wonderful experience to have with the family. Definitely coming back on a yearly basis."

"I’m not sure what has happened to this property. Yes, you are on the beach. Yes, you may have an ocean view if you do pay the price for it. We booked a day bed for $300 and was told beverage and food service would be provided however, that was not the case. Went to the ocean club and was given a dirty cup with dirty water which had me so concerned. Chef also came out and said they were making my chicken again because he felt it was under cooked. Again a little off putting. Our first room had such a loud fridge and freezer the engineers had to come in and unplug it. The resort in general is overly crowded due to being open to the general public. It makes it very hard to enjoy the amenities of the hotel at night. I don’t know if the completion of the remodel caused them to grow too fast with more demand than they are able to keep up with. The service and quality has gone severely down hill. Jay, Alex, and Sandra at the Beach Village listened to my concerns and tried to accommodate anyway they could but to me the Beach Village side was always SUPPOSED to be superior and higher quality when it comes to service and it just didn’t meet my expectations. Nothing to support the $1,000+ a night cost. I had an issue literally everyday the 4 days I was here. It really breaks my heart because the Del use to be so special to me and my family and now I’m not sure I’ll ever return."
