PB hotel design editorial

Where the bluffs of Del Mar drop toward the Pacific just north of San Diego, a cluster of grey-shingled, steeply gabled pavilions evoke the easy vernacular of a New England coastal village — an architectural choice that has always distinguished L'Auberge Del Mar from the glass-and-steel resort typology that dominates Southern California's premium hotel market. The property, which took shape on a site with deep local history — a predecessor inn called the Del Mar Hotel drew Hollywood's golden-age elite to the nearby racetrack — carries 119 rooms across low-rise buildings arranged to preserve sight lines to the water, a deliberate massing that keeps the Pacific as the dominant spatial reference at every turn. A recent refresh brought the interiors into alignment with a cooler, more restrained California sensibility: upholstered headboards in channeled grey linen, dark walnut nightstands with fluted drawer fronts, patterned wool-blend carpeting in muted taupe and charcoal, and plantation shutters filtering bright coastal light across every room. The restaurant Adelaide — its host stand faced in reeded walnut over a marble plinth, pendant lights in woven rattan — signals a shift toward the warmer material language that defines current California hospitality design. The pool deck, furnished with teak-framed loungers and anchored by a fire-and-water feature, steps down toward the ocean in a sequence that makes the sky at dusk feel deliberately composed rather than incidental.

"Room is overly tired, room 205. Top left drawer, only one I used doesn’t work well. Bathroom cabinet and other furniture chipped and finish off. The one drawer I used wasn’t clean I wiped it out. Deck surface looked old and beat up. View from terrace included party deck which had trash left over on it. Refrigerator in room was locked no key given to us or offered to us. Good water refillable bottle system but no info on where to refill. I walked entire 2nd floor then went to front desk at 11 PM to ask where to refill., no one at desk. After 5 minutes another guest came up who told me where to go. Literally 15 minutes to refill bottle. Came back after concert around 10:30 and had not eaten dinner. Nothing at hotel but were told that place across street was open until midnight, so walked all the way over there and were told they closed for food at 10PM so we ate potato chips in room for dinner. One employee offered to open gift shop but other employee said nothing in there so didn’t open it. Next day I noted better food options there than in room. I related all this to front desk manager morning at check out, she listened and said she would tell someone about it. She never apologized on behalf of hotel and didn’t offer anything to us for all of these problems. This all took place during our stay which began at 4:30 Sunday and ended at 11 AM Monday."

"Great location, but beware of room 244, there was a wedding reherseral, wedding and dinner outside our room for days, plus set up and take down"

"Very disappointing stay. It’s aging and needs an update in rooms. Landscape is neglected. Pool area is dated and not private. Looks onto parking lot; should have a lovely ivied wall. Lobby is great! Excellent music and vibe every evening. Location is great with lots of excellent restaurants across street or within walking distance."

"In town for a wedding at Power House Park with an afterparty of Jimmy O's, L'Auburge was the most perfect location for our week in Del Mar. This was our second stay and it was just amazing as the first. The room was clean and got plenty cool during the heatwave (hello in room ceiling fan), the bed and linens were comfortable and clean, and the staff was 10/10. Amanda with front office, Michael with housekeeping, Miguel with engineering, Doug with beach valet, and Sean with valet were all so kind and really helped make our stay 5 stars. We also made time for an 80 minute massage and wow, Mary and Kelly deserve a review all of their own - ask for either one if you need some true relaxation. Thanks, LDM! We hope to see you again."
