PB hotel design editorial

Gaslamp Quarter's grid of Victorian commercial buildings sets a demanding architectural context — ornate, brick-heavy, emphatically nineteenth century — and the new-build structure that houses Pendry San Diego navigates that pressure with measured confidence. Designed by AECOM with interiors by Gulla Jónsdóttir, the 317-room, twelve-storey property opened in 2017, its lower floors clad in textured brick with arched window surrounds and black metal fenestration that acknowledge the neighborhood's historic grain before the upper stories step back into a cleaner, contemporary register of smooth stone and glass. Jónsdóttir's interiors draw on a romanticized version of California's early-twentieth-century social life — the guestrooms furnished with walnut-framed beds, navy plaid settees with wood trim, swivel desk chairs upholstered in burgundy, and oversized framed mirrors that lend the spaces the feeling of a well-appointed club rather than a chain hotel. The dark charcoal carpet grounds each room against floor-to-ceiling windows framing downtown San Diego and the bay beyond. Downstairs, the Oxford Social Club bar is the most theatrical moment in the building: an embossed tin ceiling pressed in intricate geometric patterns hovers over a double-height room where crimson velvet tub chairs and a backlit walnut bar counter create a atmosphere closer to a Gilded Age saloon than anything contemporary. The rooftop pool deck, lined with teak loungers and turquoise-striped umbrellas, pulls the whole composition back into Southern California ease.

"This is a luxurious hotel in a fantastic location! The staff was friendly and made everything easy. The library themed nooks on the second floor are gorgeous. The fitness center had everything. The pool looked amazing and we hated that we were so busy at a conference that we didn't get to spend more time there and at the spa. For a tiny bit more than some of the nearby hotels we got a truly luxurious stay."

"Every staff member was very kind, went above and beyond whether it was with a greeting, opening doors, or anticipating our needs. The hotel pool was lovely, the bar at night was always a good time with great drinks. The room was spectacular. Would definitely stay here again!"

"Overall a nice hotel, but three days after we left we were hit with honor bar charges that were not ours. It seems as if the hotel uses this tactic to raise a little additional money from their customers once they have left. Infuriating!"

"I stayed Thursday to Sunday, last week of February 2026 for a mini-conference, also held at the hotel. Check-in went very well, I received a room upgrade without solicitation. The room itself was very nice indeed; very comfortable and great city view. Everything worked, the bed & sheets were the best and service of the room very efficient. I will say though that I just read the traveller tip about asking for a mini fridge as the PAYG electronic minibar is not to my liking. I wish I’d seen this, or thought of it myself. Conference facilities on P1 worked as we’d hoped and the breakfast & lunch provided was always of high quality. The pool and spa on the third floor looked lovely however, I did not get time to make use of them. This hotel is in a great location to visit many areas in SD, nearby and a short Uber away. The concierge staff were very helpful and engaging too; even inquiring how certain (non-hotel) related activities went for us."
