PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the clifftops above one of Southern California's last stretches of undeveloped coastline, where the rare Torrey pine clings to eroded sandstone bluffs above the Pacific, The Lodge at Torrey Pines was conceived from the outset as an homage to Greene and Greene — the Pasadena brothers whose early twentieth-century Craftsman work defined a particularly Californian strain of Arts and Crafts architecture. Opened in 2002 and designed by Wimmer Yamada and Caughey, the 170-room property deploys stacked-stone terraces, exposed timber bracketing, and cedar-shingled rooflines with a fidelity to its source material that stops just short of reproduction. The aerial view confirms what the ground-level images suggest: a low-slung complex that settles into its landscape rather than commanding it, the massing broken into interconnected pavilions that step down toward the Torrey Pines Golf Course and the sea beyond. Inside, the Craftsman vocabulary carries through without interruption. Guest rooms are furnished with quartersawn oak mission beds, Morris chairs in cognac leather, and fireplaces surfaced in matte green Arts and Crafts tile — the kind of celadon-glazed ceramic that Louis Sullivan and the Grueby Faience Company made canonical around 1905. Tiffany-style lamp shades cast amber light across patterned wool carpets, and French doors open onto balconies framing the golf course and the Pacific horizon. The terrace restaurant extends over a hardwood deck beneath exposed timber pergolas, wicker armchairs arranged at white-clothed tables with an uninterrupted sight line to the water — a setting that earns its atmosphere rather than borrowing it.

About

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is an award-winning luxury resort set atop the cliffs of Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla, California. Awarded the AAA Five Diamond rating for 18 consecutive years, the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, and Travel + Leisure’s Top 50 Hotels in the United States and Canada, The Lodge provides stunning views of the world-renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course and the Pacific Ocean and endless opportunities for guests to enjoy San Diego’s warm climate – from outdoor dining and relaxing at the spa to hiking, golfing and more. The Lodge is modeled after the famed Gamble and Blacker houses in Pasadena – two of the finest examples of early 1900s Craftsman-style architecture. Its post-and-beam construction features a natural color palette, graceful wing-like rooflines, shingle and sandstone-bluff exteriors, clinker-brick masonry, rich woodwork, and natural stone surfaces. Arrivals are greeted by doormen attired in kilted Scottish dress, while inside are 170 spacious guest rooms and suites designed for supreme comfort. The Lodge’s signature restaurant A.R. Valentien – rated Best Hotel Restaurant in the West by Sunset Magazine in 2015 – is a destination for fresh regional cuisine served in an elegant setting overlooking the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Artisan Table Dinners highlighting farm-to-table fare in a communal setting are offered weekly, while Executive Chef Jackson headlines The Lodge’s annual Celebrate the Craft event, one of Southern California’s premier showcases for regionally grown ingredients and innovative cooking and winemaking. For a more casual vibe, The Grill at The Lodge offers a full menu of favorites whether dining indoors or on the patio, while its bar is an ideal gathering place after a day on the golf course. The Spa at Torrey Pines features signature treatments themed around the beauty and purity of the Pacific coastline. This 9,500 square foot space uses botanical and marine-based extracts from European product lines Phytomer, SkinCeuticals, Farmhouse Fresh and NV Organics to replenish and restore the body and mind. Additional features of The Lodge include a croquet lawn, heated outdoor pool and cabanas, whirlpool, outdoor terrace with chaise lounges, hiking at the adjacent Torrey Pines State Reserve, a fitness center and the Scripps Library, a public space featuring a pool table, board games and more. Adjacent to The Lodge, the Torrey Pines Golf Course is an iconic 36-hole course that hosts the PGA Tour’s annual Farmers Insurance Open. Whether on the North Course or South Course, our guests have the opportunity to play where the pros play with the stunning La Jolla coastline as a backdrop. Nearby attractions include downtown La Jolla and Del Mar, Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the La Jolla Playhouse performing arts center and the Museum of Contemporary Art. During spring and summer, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club entices visitors with the thrill of live racing, while a popular year-round choice is the Torrey Pines State Reserve, a magnificent 2,000 acres of protected rare Torrey Pine trees featuring pristine beaches and eight miles of trails; The Lodge offers complimentary guided hikes throughout the preserve daily. The Lodge is located just 15 miles north of the San Diego International Airport and downtown San Diego.

"I have stayed at The Lodge at Torrey Pines a number of times for business, but this time my wife and I decided to stay here as our original plans for vacation in Mexico had to be diverted. I have always had a great experience here, but I will say this last time has left an impression on both me and my wife. The bar adjacent to the AR Valentine restaurant has the best team out of any luxury hotel or resort I have ever lodged at. Savanah took care of us each night we went in for drinks and small bites and she was absolutely amazing. She was very personable, a joy to talk to, gave great recommendations on both the menu and places to visit while in San Diego. She made the entire stay such a delight for us. The rest of the bar team was just as hospitable, we truly cannot wait to come back to visit again soon. Thank you so much"

"On a business trip (4 nights). Suite was luxurious (rm 521/523) with comfortable king bed,2 baths, sofa, dining table, fireplaces in each room and a balcony with unmatchable view (see photos). Service and cleanliness and responsiveness were white glove including in-room dining service & one minor maintenance need. Outstanding Coffee bar for early risers behind Lobby (Floor 2 ). 2 restaurants - both walkable from room - one casual great for breakfast or lunch, one upscale for a special delicious evening meal. In between, you can sit down in lounge area of AJ's and order off a scaleddown menu. Walk to golf and hiking . Great pool lounge area. Access to spa daily with room key (sauna, aromatherapy room, napping room with fireplace, lockers, showers) and workout room ... get there before the other avids as it is a bit close) but always accessible and clean. Bar is well tended, a celebration, and can be loud so don't book those tables for an intimate dinner at AJs. Only note on our room: if you are looking for quiet, I would suggest overlooking the central courtyard rather than the golf - there are often events hosted on the green overlooking the course - didn't bother me but definitely more lively."

"Excellent in every way. Craftsman style large rooms. Well kept inside and out. Top notch staff and food. The Grill restaurant is excellent. Self parking is $55.00 and very easy."

"The Lodge is such a special place. It is a stunning craftsman built hotel surrounded by hiking trails and golf courses. It is a true sanctuary. The staff is warm and welcoming from when you pull up to the front of the hotel with valet and bellmen, to check-in, and throughout the property and restaurants. We LOVE staying in the hotel as all of the rooms have been cozy and comfortable. It is always a treat when we stay in a Palisades Room with fireplace and balcony. Mara, the Front Desk Manager, is exceptional. She understands Hospitality and how to make a guest feel appreciated. Mara has gone above and beyond to make us, guests, feel appreciated and comfortable during our stays. We have already booked our next stay! Added perks are that the hotel is dog-friendly and have destination EV chargers. Initially, the only challenge may be finding your way through the hotel and to the amenities and restaurants, etc. It is easy once you learn the levels as the hotel is built on a hill. So excited to return to The Lodge next month!"

"Amex FHR: Know before you go: My room upgrades were denied, and overall, the property lacks a true luxury feel. If you are sensitive to smells, be aware that this is an extremely dog-friendly hotel; unfortunately, there was a noticeable stench of urine throughout. All 4 in our party had immediate congestion that cleared after we left and we questioned if there was mold. The rooms are not at all plush. The bathrobes felt like cardboard and are well overdue for replacement. While the sparse wood furniture is beautiful, the room lacks soft touches—upholstered headboards (to prevent bruised shins) and comfy chairs by the fireplace would bring it in line with the Pebble Beach standard. The carpet is worn, the shower tile had mildew stains, the bathtub is yucky and there were no luxury extras like toothbrushes, razors and makeup remover toilettes. We found the 2 restaurants only ok. We booked both a Reserve View and a Fire Pit room; for the price point, I would skip this property as there are lots of Fine Hotels and Resort options in Southern California."
