PB hotel design editorial

Ulysses S. Grant's son, Ulysses S. Grant Jr., built this Beaux-Arts monument on Broadway in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter as a tribute to his father, opening it in 1910 to designs by architect Harrison Albright. The US Grant has since become one of the defining civic anchors of downtown San Diego — its cream-colored facade, symmetrical fenestration, and Corinthian-columned porte-cochère visible across Horton Plaza Park, where a Victorian iron fountain frames the approach through a colonnade of mature queen palms. The building rises ten stories over 270 rooms and has hosted every American president from Woodrow Wilson to Barack Obama, a lineage that gives the property an almost constitutional weight. A renovation completed around 2010, carried out under the Starwood Luxury Collection flag, pulled the interiors between two eras without quite choosing between them. The guestrooms deploy houndstooth-patterned carpeting in ink blue and cream, white painted panel moldings, and large-format figurative line drawings above the beds — gestures toward contemporary California without abandoning the original plaster cornices. The dining room favors warm-stained walnut paneling, tufted cream banquettes, louvered plantation shutters, and pendant shades in blackened steel, a vocabulary closer to a San Francisco private club than a Southern California grand hotel. The bar pulls harder toward the present, mixing polished chrome Ghost-style stools and faceted crystal pendant clusters against the same dark woodwork, a grand piano anchoring the far end of the room.

THE US GRANT, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Diego Reviews

"This review is for Amex plat users only. Don’t expect your perks to apply here. I rarely write reviews but since this hotel didn’t let us have early check in I have time while waiting in their lobby. 2 stars cuz our average experience is to not have to wait even just an hour for our rooms. Also our upgrade was to an Ada room. Yay. The lobby and registration staff were nice at least, but the wait for brunch was over 1.5 hr long and the elevators are slow AF. There are definitely better options in the area. My buddy used his chase edit for the intercontinental and couldn’t stop yapping about how good it was."

"Front desk staff was stuck up, the bathroom/ plumbing was an issue both with shower and toilet, overpriced for what you get. $70 a day to park. Id say it was in a nice location if it weren’t for the shady, homeless, drunk people lingering around. Disappointed to say the very least."

"Only giving this hotel 2 stars , as day we arrived we were told our accommodation we had previously booked over 6 months in advance was not available. They had an ‘event’ on the day we were due to check-in and were ‘fully committed’ so had no room for us. I find this unacceptable , and proves to me that this hotel will favour a group booking over an individual’s. Altho we were moved to another hotel, it was not what we paid for and the messing about moving hotels disrupted our planned schedule."

"I wish I had read reviews like this before booking. This hotel is a complete rip off and I am still furious about how they treated me. They charged my credit card for an extra full night that I never stayed. I checked out on the agreed date but they processed an unauthorized extra charge anyway. When I immediately spoke to the manager and asked for a refund he was rude, unhelpful, and flat out refused to fix it. I am now disputing the charge with my credit card company because of their mistake. On top of the billing error the room service was awful. Orders were slow, wrong, and the food arrived cold. Multiple other issues made the entire stay disappointing from start to finish. The front desk and management showed zero interest in making things right. Save yourself the headache and money. Stay somewhere else. This place will overcharge you and then refuse to correct their own errors. I will never return and I am warning everyone I can."

"It's a very nice, old hotel but with comfortable modern rooms and elegant public areas. Good TV, bed and shower. Useful to have a restaurant on the premises but a less formal coffee shop in the hotel would be a bonus although I don't know how feasible it would be. A minibar in the room would bring it in line with other hotels of this calibre I've stayed in. It's on Broadway so about 15 - 20 minutes to walk to the waterfront. The Gaslamp and Little Italy are a short walk. You need to decide whether you want to be very near the waterfront or stay a short walk away. Very attentive staff!"
