PB hotel design editorial

Ulysses S. Grant's son, Ulysses S. Grant Jr., built this Beaux-Arts monument on Broadway in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter as a tribute to his father, opening it in 1910 to designs by architect Harrison Albright. The US Grant has since become one of the defining civic anchors of downtown San Diego — its cream-colored facade, symmetrical fenestration, and Corinthian-columned porte-cochère visible across Horton Plaza Park, where a Victorian iron fountain frames the approach through a colonnade of mature queen palms. The building rises ten stories over 270 rooms and has hosted every American president from Woodrow Wilson to Barack Obama, a lineage that gives the property an almost constitutional weight. A renovation completed around 2010, carried out under the Starwood Luxury Collection flag, pulled the interiors between two eras without quite choosing between them. The guestrooms deploy houndstooth-patterned carpeting in ink blue and cream, white painted panel moldings, and large-format figurative line drawings above the beds — gestures toward contemporary California without abandoning the original plaster cornices. The dining room favors warm-stained walnut paneling, tufted cream banquettes, louvered plantation shutters, and pendant shades in blackened steel, a vocabulary closer to a San Francisco private club than a Southern California grand hotel. The bar pulls harder toward the present, mixing polished chrome Ghost-style stools and faceted crystal pendant clusters against the same dark woodwork, a grand piano anchoring the far end of the room.

"I booked with Amex Plat FHR, also have Marriott plat status. I paid $470 USD for a king room and tried to use a SNR for an upgrade. I got a message saying the SNR was given back bc they couldnt upgrade me to the room I chose. I was told I was given a double upgrade to the room in the pix I posted here, room 913. Small room, No view, plumbing/toilet noise was loud and crumbs and paper would come up in the toilet, the room was generally noisy not sure if it was more than the pluming maybe its just bc its old. Slipped in the bathroom (did not fall) when taking a shower the water was burning hot then not even warm back to burning hot no matter where we set the temp to. Parking is $70 a night, front desk/reception are sassy/rude, no pool but knew that ahead of time. I had booked a room that the pix didnt match the room I was given and since I supposedly got a double upgrade I’d think the room would be better but it wasnt, they said that I booked on a 3rd party sight (amex FHR) and theirs nothing they can do to compensate as those materials (pix) are not created or controlled by their hotel. The bed was comfy and the concierge was delightful. I was so looking fwd to this hotel. Flew from MT to go to a wedding. We flew in day early to celebrate our 13th anniversary . I chose this hotel bc my husband is a history buff and wanted to surprise him. I was surprised by the amount of sketch people around wasnt the safest feeling. Over sad."

"Such a luxurious stay at the US Grqnt! Absolutely loved our stay here. Everyone we encountered that worked at the hotel, from the front desk, restaurant, valet, room service and concierge was fantastic! So helpful and kind. The room was so comfortable and furnished beautifully. Would love to come back and stay again!"

"This is a beautiful historic hotel, with a gorgeous lobby and beautiful rooms. The beds are so comfortable, the linens exquisite, and the toiletries luxurious. We had a delicious breakfast at the lovely restaurant, and the staff there, as well as at the check-in counter were so welcoming and friendly. I’d recommend this hotel to anyone and hope to come back!!"

"Valet parking was very convenient. The hotel itself is beautiful, and the staff member we spoke to at check-in was really welcoming and made very helpful suggestions about things to do locally. Our suite was beautiful, with interesting architectural features and good quality crisp white bedlinen. Our bathroom was small but clean, with abundant soft towels. We would definitely stay at this hotel again in future."

"I’m pretty disappointed with our stay here. I specifically booked this hotel through the Chase Edit program because of the extra perks, but in the end I didn't receive any. I know the room upgrade is "subject to availability" and I did not receive one...but I’d even reached out to the concierge before our trip to ask for an upper floor. Instead, they put us on the absolute lowest guest floor possible. Also, the welcome amenity? Never showed up. The biggest issue was the $100 hotel credit and the breakfast benefit. The front desk flat out refused to honor them because I didn't have the physical Chase credit card on me...only my virtual one (tap to pay) on my phone. Look, I have a lot of cards and I don't carry every single piece of plastic when I travel. I’ve never had an issue like this at other Chase hotels before. It was very frustrating because I even got the Chase concierge on the phone to talk to the manager and confirm my card and it being active, they still wouldn't budge. It felt like they were just looking for excuses not to give us what we paid for. The only saving grace was the cleaning service. The staff were so nice and did a superb job keeping the room in great shape, but the management side of things was a total mess. Won't be staying here again."
