PB hotel design editorial

At the northern foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, where the Marin Headlands slope down to meet San Francisco Bay, a cluster of white-painted Craftsman-era buildings dating to the early twentieth century once served as the officer quarters of Fort Baker. That military past gives Cavallo Point Lodge its structural spine — 28 of the property's 142 rooms are fitted into these original Colonial Revival houses, their warm ochre interiors, radiator grilles, double-hung sash windows, and sloped attic ceilings preserved more or less as found, furnished with dark-stained platform beds, leather club chairs, and framed black-and-white photography that keeps the atmosphere closer to a well-appointed historic home than a resort. The contemporary lodges, designed by the San Francisco firm CCS Architecture and completed when the property opened in 2008, take a different approach entirely. Cedar-clad ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glazing on bronze-toned aluminum frames, and tawny leather seating grouped around gas fireplaces give these rooms a Pacific Northwest warmth that connects them to the eucalyptus groves and grassland outside without mimicking the historic buildings. The spa and lodge building, visible in the images with its double-height glass facade and teak pergola, anchors a terraced garden with a fire pit surround and a pool stepped into the hillside. Inside the historic mess hall, now a bar and restaurant, an original pressed-tin ceiling and cast-iron columns survive intact, the space layered with blue velvet banquette seating, plaid armchairs, globe pendant lights on brass fittings, and a veined marble bar counter.

"Unbeatable views and access to Golden Gate, water front and Marin Headlands. If you get good weather it’s perfect. We got the Golden Gate view room. It was pricey but worth it."

"Cavallo Point is one of those places that feels special the second you arrive. The setting near the Golden Gate Bridge is just ridiculous in the best way, and the whole property has a calm, polished feel that makes it easy to understand why people love staying here. The mix of historic charm, open space, and incredible views gives it a very different energy from staying in the city. It feels peaceful without feeling boring, and upscale without trying too hard. If you want a stay just outside San Francisco that actually feels memorable, Cavallo Point is hard to beat."

"What a wonderful weekend getaway! We enjoyed the grounds, the food, service and location immensely. We live so close in San Rafael but it was a lovely romantic birthday getaway. Highly recommend it."

"We wanted to get away to do a retreat to work on our small business and we found this amazing spot in Sausalito, a couple of hours away from us. We've been to the Bay Area many times but never knew about this great spot, built on the former Fort Baker and inside the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It's tucked away just under the bridge, on a secluded bay and the views from the grounds are spectactular. The hotel was developed in 2008 and the former officer housing was turned into hotel rooms, and they also built a more modern set of rooms where the barracks used to be. There are a couple of original buildings that have the lobby and the restaurants and there are lots of nice touches inside, ceilings, wood and period photos and artwork. We were greeted warmly when we checked in and the bellman brought our bags up to the room for us while we had lunch. Which was nice because we were up a slight but steep hill. We had a modern room which worked out perfectly for us, it was right next to the Chapel where the yoga classes were held in the mornings and just a quick walk down to the restaurant for breakfast. We made were able to enjoy the spa, some wonderful yoga classes, a couple of great hikes around the property and evening happy hour in the lobby. So much was included which was great -bottled water in our rooms, a nice espresso machine, a starter set of snacks, and valet parking for our car. Our room was a nice size and we were able to get our work done and have plenty of room to relax. The bed was really comfortable. The shower/tub seemed a little dated, but the bathroom itself was big and the smart mirror was pretty neat. The best part of our stay was the service. Everyone was so nice and friendly and really took great care of us. It really is a special place."
