PB hotel design editorial

At the crest of Pacific Heights, where Broadway meets Broderick and the city drops away toward the Marina and the bay beyond, a five-storey Edwardian apartment building has anchored this residential block since 1903. Hotel Drisco — one of San Francisco's most quietly authoritative small hotels, with just 48 rooms across its upper floors — survived the 1906 earthquake and served for decades as a rooming house for the neighborhood's professional class before its transformation into a boutique hotel. The cream-painted stucco facade, its cornice articulated with dentil molding and its bay windows stepping rhythmically across the street elevation, carries the composed dignity of the pre-quake city's domestic architecture. Inside, the interiors strike a balance between Edwardian propriety and a cleaner contemporary sensibility, a tension the design navigates with considerable assurance. Rooms are finished in warm greige tones with white-painted wainscoting, geometric-patterned broadloom carpets, and dark mahogany case furniture — nightstands, chests of drawers, and open shelving units with brass ring pulls — grounded by sputnik-style brass chandeliers that inject a mid-century counterpoint into otherwise traditional rooms. The club lounge shifts register entirely: wide-plank oak floors, a tray ceiling with a starburst brass fixture overhead, and scallop-patterned gold wallcovering give the space a warmer, more enveloping atmosphere. Woven Roman shades, Chippendale-inflected accent chairs, and botanical prints on the walls reinforce the sense that this is a private residence of some taste, operating quietly as a hotel.

"Hotel Drisco is the kind of place that feels polished, quiet, and genuinely refined. Set in Pacific Heights, it gives you a very different San Francisco experience than staying downtown — more residential, more elegant, and honestly a little more relaxing. The hotel itself feels intimate and thoughtfully done, and the neighborhood around it is beautiful to walk through. It’s a great base if you want to experience a more classic, upscale side of the city. If you appreciate boutique hotels with charm and a strong sense of place, Hotel Drisco is a really appealing option."

"Had a great experience at the Hotel Drisco. Rooms are very elegantly appointed and are very quiet. Great mattress and pillows. Bulgari ammeneties are great. Filtered water and bottles are complementary. Very clean room with maid service twice daily. Love the cookie at turndown service. The staff is very accomdating and will help you with anything you need. What is really amazing is the included breakfast and happy hour. For breakfast you can have smoked salmon, fruit, oatmeal, cereal, pastries, breads and eggs any way you like them which are excellent. For happy hour they have some very nice hor h'oeuvres such as meat, cheese smoked salmon, nuts, breads, hummas, guacamole, too many things to mention. Coffee and tea are always available in the lobby. A great location within walking distance to the Presidio. Great quiet neighborhood. An excellent hotel for San Francisco."

"We spent 5 nights at the Drisco. Even though it was a return visit for us, we found that many changes (all good) had occurred in the years since we last visited. Our room was on the first floor and while it lacked "a view" it was spacious and very quiet at night. The hotel is a beautiful and gracious place. Staff are responsive to questions and gave us helpful advice. The breakfasts were superb! The buffet items are very fresh and the made-to-order eggs never disappointed. The two-hour evening wine and heavy hors d'oeuvres were incredible! In fact, there were times when we had big lunches and so cancelled our dinner reservations and had a light supper at the hotel. The hotel also has a very nice Room Service menu. If you're around at 3 p.m. they put out freshly made biscotti in the Sitting Room. I loved the chocolate biscotti, but the lemon biscotti were very good too. Bathroom amenities were top notch. I was initially intimidated by the Dyson hairdryer but quickly became a fan. We slept very well as our bedding was perfect. If we're able to visit San Francisco again, we will definitely return to The Drisco."

"Beautiful, small and friendly hotel in the best spot in San Francisco. The rooms are perfect, every detail has been thought of. The staff are very helpful, the breakfasts are delicious and their welcome evening drink is better than eating out. It’s easy to get around SF and the view and park next door make it unbeatable. I hope to return soon."

"My wife and I spent 3 lovely nights at the Hotel Drisco. It is a lovely boutique hotel which is exceptionally clean and well-cared for. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There are some perks including a great wine hour ( 2 hours actually) with good wines, and great appetizers which could probably substitute for dinner. The breakfast is really excellent. Egg dishes are made to order and coffee is available this way as well. Our room was not large but beautifully furnished and the bed/bedding was top-notch. The bathroom was plenty roomy and great. The hotel was apparently renovated in 2023. Maid service included turndown at night. It is set amidst the mansions of Pacific Heights. The location is fine in that regard but it is not near a lot of the usual tourist sites. I suspect the hotel sees a lot of repeat customers who want to be in this area. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Everyone seems to go the "extra yard" to help make you stay more enjoyable."
