PB hotel design editorial

Directly across Third Street from Mario Botta's San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a 31-floor limestone-clad tower that opened in 1998 gives the W San Francisco one of the more culturally charged addresses in the city's SoMa district. The building, designed by Hornberger + Worstell, carries the postmodern classicism typical of late-1990s American hotel construction — set-back crown, symmetrical fenestration, a podium base that anchors the tower to the street grid — while the interior has been substantially reworked over successive renovations to keep pace with the W brand's evolution from Ian Schrager-era nightclub aesthetic toward something with more graphic energy. The guest rooms, visible in the images, show that graphic energy clearly: faceted gold headboard panels arranged in angular, origami-like geometry rise against white lacquered walls, while charcoal carpet printed with gold triangular motifs and fuchsia-accented bedding push the palette hard. The double-height restaurant space works a more considered register — sheer chain-link curtains diffusing light across walnut-topped tables, globe pendant clusters descending through the void, white upholstered dining chairs grounding the room in something closer to calm. The bar leans back into pure spectacle, chrome mesh columns catching LED-blue uplighting beside white lacquer bar stools. The 404-room property has always been most alive at night, when the tower's position beside Botta's terracotta drum makes the two buildings feel like they belong to the same late-century conversation about urban confidence.

"We absolutely love this hotel! It is, without a doubt, our favorite hotel in all of San Francisco. The rooms are wonderful, but what truly makes this property exceptional is the incredible staff. From check-in, to our phone interactions with Espi, to the restaurant team, every experience is consistently outstanding. It's the little things that make all the difference. What impresses us most is that so many team members recognize us and remember our names, making every stay feel personal and welcoming. When my partner and I checked in, Jenny greeted us with a warm smile and welcomed us back by name. Whenever we call the front desk, Espi is always gracious, kind, and genuinely happy to help. In the restaurant, Qi always recognizes us and makes us feel right at home, and our servers, Alvin and Jane, even remember exactly how I like my coffee. Magnolia is always accommodating, responsive, and quick to help with any questions we have. This level of genuine hospitality is rare, and it's what keeps us coming back. Thank you to the entire team for making every stay feel so special. We can't wait for our next visit!"

"We recently stayed at the W San Francisco while celebrating our wedding anniversary, and despite the hotel undergoing significant renovations, we had a truly wonderful experience. Before our arrival, there was a small communication hiccup, and our anniversary message didn't reach the right people. These things happen, and what impressed us most wasn't the mistake—it was how the team responded once they became aware of it. The hotel is currently in the midst of a major renovation, which naturally comes with some inconveniences. However, the staff consistently went above and beyond to minimize any disruption and make up for it in every way they could. Their genuine care, generosity, and commitment to guest satisfaction were evident throughout our stay. Once they learned we were celebrating our anniversary, the team made us feel truly special. The thoughtful touches, warm hospitality, and exceptional professionalism transformed what could have been an ordinary stay into one we'll always remember. Rather than focusing on the temporary inconveniences of the renovation, we left remembering the outstanding people who made us feel so welcome. The accommodations were comfortable, the service was exceptional, and every interaction with the staff reinforced that they are dedicated to creating memorable experiences—even while navigating a complex renovation project. Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone who helped make our anniversary so special. You are a credit to the W San Francisco, and your efforts did not go unnoticed. We left with wonderful memories, and we're excited to return once the renovation is complete to experience the hotel's next chapter. Until then, we can wholeheartedly recommend the W San Francisco to anyone looking for exceptional hospitality and a team that truly cares about its guests."

"We stayed here for an event and found the experience to be average overall. Parts of the hotel appeared to be under renovation, and the temporary drapes and barriers made it feel somewhat unfinished and confusing to navigate. We booked a Studio Suite, but it felt quite small—many hotels would market a room of this size as a standard guest room rather than a suite. The windows were noticeably dirty, and the room itself felt plain and lacking warmth or character. On the positive side, the staff were pleasant, responsive, and helpful throughout our stay. While the location is convenient, there are several better hotel options in San Francisco at similar price points. Based on this experience, I would choose to stay elsewhere on a future visit."

"I wanted to share that I had a wonderful 3 night stay at W Hotels San Francisco for the APA conference. The hotel was clean, stylish, and ideally located. The most noteworthy part was the outstanding job done by manager Estela Sunga, who went above and beyond in terms of being supportive and accommodating. There was a booking related error (not fault of W), and she was able to more than rectify the situation, and followed up to ensure that my experience was excellent. Estela Sunga is an inspiration and a great asset to W Hotels. Like Michael Jordan, she escalates the level of excellence to her entire team!"

"Great room with a great view. Lupe the hotel manager and William at the Bar made our stay extra special. We were there to celebrate our 17th year wedding anniversary and had nothing but great service. I just wish I had realized my stay included SF MOMA tickets so I could have planned accordingly and possibly visited. Oh well just another excuse to come again."
