PB hotel design editorial

Directly across Third Street from Mario Botta's San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a 31-floor limestone-clad tower that opened in 1998 gives the W San Francisco one of the more culturally charged addresses in the city's SoMa district. The building, designed by Hornberger + Worstell, carries the postmodern classicism typical of late-1990s American hotel construction — set-back crown, symmetrical fenestration, a podium base that anchors the tower to the street grid — while the interior has been substantially reworked over successive renovations to keep pace with the W brand's evolution from Ian Schrager-era nightclub aesthetic toward something with more graphic energy. The guest rooms, visible in the images, show that graphic energy clearly: faceted gold headboard panels arranged in angular, origami-like geometry rise against white lacquered walls, while charcoal carpet printed with gold triangular motifs and fuchsia-accented bedding push the palette hard. The double-height restaurant space works a more considered register — sheer chain-link curtains diffusing light across walnut-topped tables, globe pendant clusters descending through the void, white upholstered dining chairs grounding the room in something closer to calm. The bar leans back into pure spectacle, chrome mesh columns catching LED-blue uplighting beside white lacquer bar stools. The 404-room property has always been most alive at night, when the tower's position beside Botta's terracotta drum makes the two buildings feel like they belong to the same late-century conversation about urban confidence.

"I wanted to share that I had a wonderful 3 night stay at W Hotels San Francisco for the APA conference. The hotel was clean, stylish, and ideally located. The most noteworthy part was the outstanding job done by manager Estela Sunga, who went above and beyond in terms of being supportive and accommodating. There was a booking related error (not fault of W), and she was able to more than rectify the situation, and followed up to ensure that my experience was excellent. Estela Sunga is an inspiration and a great asset to W Hotels. Like Michael Jordan, she escalates the level of excellence to her entire team!"

"Great room with a great view. Lupe the hotel manager and William at the Bar made our stay extra special. We were there to celebrate our 17th year wedding anniversary and had nothing but great service. I just wish I had realized my stay included SF MOMA tickets so I could have planned accordingly and possibly visited. Oh well just another excuse to come again."

"I stayed at the W Hotel Yerba Buena for a week while working at Moscone West. I found the hotel to be clean, quiet, and comfortable, conveniently located near everything I needed during my stay. I particularly enjoyed having a Nespresso machine in my room as the coffee maker, and I even supplemented the provided pods with some from the nearby Whole Foods, which is a nice advantage over the proprietary coffee makers found in most hotels. However, the lighting in the room could have been improved. It seemed designed more to enhance the atmosphere than to provide adequate lighting for tasks, but that wasn't a deal-breaker for me. Additionally, the fridge and drawers near the desk were occupied by the honor bar, leaving no space to unpack my suitcase or store my own food and drinks. Overall, it's a nice place, and I would stay again, but I do wish they had prioritized functionality over aesthetics."

"I recently stayed at the W San Francisco and had a fabulous experience overall. The hotel has a modern, stylish vibe the moment you walk in, and the staff was welcoming and attentive from check-in to check-out. The room was clean, spacious, comfortable, and had beautiful city views. The bed was especially cozy, and I appreciated the blackout shades and quiet atmosphere—it made it easy to relax and get a great night’s sleep. The bathroom felt updated and well-designed, with nice amenities. One of my favorite parts of the hotel was the energy in the lobby bar—it’s lively without being overwhelming, and perfect for a cocktail or casual meet-up. The location is also very convenient, close to downtown and major attractions. Overall, the W offers a fun, upscale stay with a great mix of comfort and style. I can’t wait to come back!"

"I like this. It is set in the center of San Franscisco. Everyone there is really nice, nice atmosphere. The rooms are nice, fancy, with great views. This hotel is very clean. They serve breakfast in the morning, expensive, but good. I recommend the Continential Crossiant. The elevator goes very fast, so if you get a room up high, your ears might pop on the way down. It has a bar in the evening, and the service is very nice. I definitely recommend."
