PB hotel design editorial

At the intersection of State Street and Anacapa in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, a five-storey building in the city's mandatory Spanish Colonial Revival style places the Kimpton Canary Hotel in direct conversation with the courthouse, the county administration building, and the broader architectural consensus that has governed this city since the 1925 earthquake rebuild. White stucco, terracotta barrel-tile rooflines, dark-painted iron balustrades, and a rooftop pergola of exposed timber rafters visible in the images all honor that civic compact — not as pastiche but as genuine urban continuity. The 97-room property was renovated in the early 2020s with interiors that draw on the work of Studio Collective, who calibrated the spaces to feel simultaneously rooted in California tradition and loose enough for a contemporary sensibility. The guest rooms pair dark espresso-finished barley-twist four-poster beds — their cane canopy panels nodding to the Spanish Colonial craft vocabulary of the exterior — with sage-green wainscoting, dark-stained hardwood floors, and Moroccan-influenced inlaid side tables that deepen the Mediterranean thread running through the building. A gallery wall of abstract, graphic prints in earthy ochres and charcoal keeps the rooms from slipping into pure historicism. The restaurant dining room shifts register entirely: white-painted exposed beams, channeled linen banquettes, live-edge walnut tables, and powder-blue accent chairs achieve a bright, California-coastal lightness. From the rooftop pool, the Santa Barbara Channel and the gilded dome of the county courthouse spread out across the skyline beneath striped fringed umbrellas.

"Absolutely love Kimpton properties. My friend and I stayed 4 nights, 5 days. Check-in was easy, very friendly staff (Kimberly was GREAT). The valet was fast and efficient. We were upgraded to a suite which was wonderful. The room location was very quite, no noise issues. Plenty of room in the living room, bathroom and bedroom, a lot of charm. The rooms seem very clean and well equipped with a mini refrigerator Nespresso machine and robes. The only item missing oddly in the rooms are hotel luggage racks. We went up to the roof to see the pool, looked nice, it was empty due to the cooler weather temps in Santa Barbara during our stay. We did enjoy the "Wine Happy Hour" and the complementary Coffee station in the morning. There are ice machines on every floor and on the ice machine you can also get filter water for your water bottles. To note: it is a dog loving paradise at the hotel, dogs everywhere, big dogs little dogs, I love dogs so I had fun watching all of them. OK, so our only 2 criticisms are is the fee for parking per day $55... crazy! The second criticism is why can't the hotel spare space for a small gym? The hotel is affiliated with a Free 24 hour gym, "Key 2 Gym" which worked out great, BUT it's a 16 minute walk... a 1.07miles. Might not seem much, but I work out daily at 5:00AM to get it out of the way. Walking on State Street at 4:45 AM in the dark, when the only people on the street are the aggressive homeless does not make me feel safe at all. Other than those 2 items, we loved our stay!"

"Nice hotel, comfortable room, convenient valet parking with helpful staff. Very grateful to Kimberly at front desk who was super nice and gave us excellent recommendations. Walkable area, near State St restaurants. Santa Barbara is wonderful, would love to go back. Only reason why did not give a full 5 is because it was rather expensive for a nice, but not luxury hotel. Still, great stay over a long weekend in a beautiful town."

"Lame hotel vibes, booked with chase, got nothing from them in terms of “benefits”. Should have stayed in lower state street, why better bang for your buck. Room service online ordering was not working, finally got sub par food, pool was cold af, fitness center was 2 miles away and under construction. $55 valet for guests is bs. Pretty sub par hotel"

"Loved our stay here! Location is perfect in downtown Santa Barbara. There are plenty of restaurants around, as well as downstairs. The hotel is dog-friendly and we ate breakfast just outside the restaurant in the lobby. There are dog treats near check in. There’s also tea, coffee, etc. The pool area is very nice, on the rooftop so you have a nice view of Santa Barbara: the beds were comfortable and I liked the bath and the shower. Parking is $55/night valet only, so keep that in mind. We got chocolate covered strawberries and cookies as a welcome gift with some waters in the room when we arrived. I would come back again!"
