PB hotel design editorial

At the intersection of State Street and Anacapa in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, a five-storey building in the city's mandatory Spanish Colonial Revival style places the Kimpton Canary Hotel in direct conversation with the courthouse, the county administration building, and the broader architectural consensus that has governed this city since the 1925 earthquake rebuild. White stucco, terracotta barrel-tile rooflines, dark-painted iron balustrades, and a rooftop pergola of exposed timber rafters visible in the images all honor that civic compact — not as pastiche but as genuine urban continuity. The 97-room property was renovated in the early 2020s with interiors that draw on the work of Studio Collective, who calibrated the spaces to feel simultaneously rooted in California tradition and loose enough for a contemporary sensibility. The guest rooms pair dark espresso-finished barley-twist four-poster beds — their cane canopy panels nodding to the Spanish Colonial craft vocabulary of the exterior — with sage-green wainscoting, dark-stained hardwood floors, and Moroccan-influenced inlaid side tables that deepen the Mediterranean thread running through the building. A gallery wall of abstract, graphic prints in earthy ochres and charcoal keeps the rooms from slipping into pure historicism. The restaurant dining room shifts register entirely: white-painted exposed beams, channeled linen banquettes, live-edge walnut tables, and powder-blue accent chairs achieve a bright, California-coastal lightness. From the rooftop pool, the Santa Barbara Channel and the gilded dome of the county courthouse spread out across the skyline beneath striped fringed umbrellas.

"I had a very disappointing experience at the Kimpton Canary. What should have been an enjoyable stay turned into one where I felt unwelcome and singled out by members of the staff. The way I was treated was noticeably different from how other guests around me were treated, and it left me feeling humiliated and deeply uncomfortable. The customer service was dismissive, unprofessional, and lacked basic respect. Instead of addressing my concerns fairly, I felt that I was judged from the start. Whether intentional or not, the experience gave me the impression that I was being treated differently because of who I am. I expect every guest to be treated with courtesy, fairness, and respect. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. I hope management takes these concerns seriously, investigates what happened, and provides better training so future guests don’t leave feeling the way I did."

"Stayed in the King Studio Suite for the first night on a 2 night stay. Location is undeniably the best in Santa Barbara midway up State Street next to Paseo Nuevo. Our room faced another room window across a small courtyard space. While "small" to call it a "suite", the room was clean and usable. However, facing across another room made it feel dark and tight. The front desk staff - Tommy and Hayden - were very helpful in accommodating. They moved us to a much bigger corner room with open sunny views of the beautiful mountains. Everything seemed great until the evening when all sorts of noises started an orchestra. A recurring subtle yet annoying whirring sound came from the AC ducts while another set of recurrent noise came from above the bedroom ceiling. Turning off the AC stopped the AC duct sound, but the other set of sounds did not stop. There was nothing the staff can do. Now that I read the reviews, this sound issue seems to be an ongoing issue. Location, breakfast at Finch & Fork downstairs, helpful staff were all great, but if you are sensitive to nonstop, recurring sounds, it may not work for you."

"Not quite a luxury resort. We stayed for 4 nights, and first had a premium king with balcony. Room was nice but smallish, with one chair. We were upgraded to a king suite thru Amex. We gained space but gave up view and airiness, which they explained. They sent a bottle of sparkling wine and strawberries for my birthday, which was very nice of them. Pool: is 3’ deep and small. Don’t expect to do laps. Restaurant: manager John was great. Very friendly and greeted us each time we walked by. breakfast was really lacking. I asked to substitute something and they said no. The potatoes they serve in the morning are terrible. Morning team was overwhelmed and could not keep up. The manager on duty in the morning didn’t seem to pitch in, just looked at what tables were open. Valet team: great. Very nice and attentive Front desk team: just okay. Don’t expect concierge service from them. Noise: you will hear your neighbors. Our neighbors had a dog that I think was left along and it would howl. Also, lots of kids and you will hear them. If I were going to Santa Barbara again I would look for more of a spa resort, this wasn’t it, but they did upgrade my room and they did send sparkling wine and strawberries. I just thought it would be more of a spa hotel."

"Slow service, no response even after notifying them at least three times about the noisy background noise from the HVAC which kept us up at night for all three nights. The only solution was wear ear plugs which did not help."
