PB hotel design editorial

A Spanish Colonial Revival building on Chapala Street in downtown Santa Barbara, its white stucco walls and exposed timber balconies folded into a neighborhood where the architectural code has barely shifted since the 1920s rebuilding that followed the great earthquake — this is the setting Palihouse Santa Barbara works carefully with rather than against. The Pali Hotel group, known for converting character buildings into loosely residential hotels, found here a property whose bones needed less intervention than personality, and the interiors deliver exactly that: terracotta tile floors laid in a broad diamond grid, whitewashed walls kept pale as sea glass, and exposed wooden ceiling beams retained from the original structure. The furniture mix draws from mid-century Scandinavian frames upholstered in plaid and ticking stripe, wicker ottomans, and rounded arch headboards in linen — pieces that suggest a well-traveled Californian's beach house rather than a curated hotel set. Pastel bolster cushions in gingham, Smeg refrigerators in cream, and globe pendants with pineapple-cast green fittings add a quietly playful register without tipping into theme. The courtyard pool is enclosed by the two-storey wings, palm trees rising above sage-painted balustrades and louvered shutters, giving the whole property the compressed warmth of a private compound. The lobby lounge opens directly into the bar through a terracotta-tiled passage, a marble-topped drum table and rope-woven stools anchoring a space that functions more like a living room than a reception.

"The hotel is peaceful, and close enough to State Street and the Funk Zone as to be walkable. The courtyard is lovely, and the staff was all extremely friendly. The rooms, however are a little old and in need of some adjustments. The bathroom comes with a slider door to the bathtub and sink area, but it wouldn't quite stay on track, and it made a loud noise when opened, waking one of us up whenever the other got up in the night to use it. The toilet and shower also had a sort of slider, but it wouldn't shut entirely because the bottom would scrape the floor. There are Nespresso machines in the room, but there is no creamer, and there is no cream downstairs. I prefer milk in my coffee, so I needed to go to the bar and buy one there. There is no coffee station in the lobby in the morning. There is ice water during the day, but it goes away in the early evening, so if you return wanting some water before bed after a night out, your option is the tap, or the pricey bottled water they have in the fridge. With a per-night cost of $1,100 to $1,200 a night, it seems reasonable to expect coffee and water. The staff could not have been nicer, and the food at the bar was good. I just wish the management would offer a little more in the way of small comforts to the guests."

"This is a beautiful, stylish property. I’ve stayed at a few other Palihouse locations and this is the prettiest. I stayed on a Wednesday and Thursday night and it was pretty quiet. I’m sure it’s also nice when it’s busy since there are some lovely indoor and outdoor public spaces. Overall, great vibe, well appointed and worth a return visit."

"This is a beautiful property but I would NEVER go back again. This is a very expensive hotel at $1100/night and our friends and us did not have a great experience. At this price, you would think that you would have complimentary waters in your room daily. As well, complimentary coffee down in the lobby. Coffee is not provided until about 8 or 8:30am at a price. And the hotel does not keep any half & half on the premises. They are very generous giving out free gummy bears and licorice but find it difficult to provide free coffee with creamer at a reasonable hour of the morning. Almost every other hotel in the area provides both water and coffee."

"My husband and I flew out to Santa Barbara and stayed here during our elopement! Chandra, Noel, Erick, Mireia, Carl and Mel made our entire experience wonderful! The service was truly 10/10 and we could not have had a better stay! We have already recommended this place to both friends and family as well as strangers we’ve met along the way on our honeymoon. We both agree we will 100% be back after having the perfect experience!!"

"Stayed two nights at Palihouse and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. The location is excellent, parking was a breeze, and the hotel itself has a real charm to it. The staff were attentive and friendly, the room was comfortable, and it was impressively quiet throughout our stay. Truly nothing to complain about - would highly recommend."
