PB hotel design editorial

Where Eucalyptus Lane meets the Pacific in Montecito, a compound of white-painted shingle-style pavilions spreads across nearly six beachfront acres — one of the last privately held stretches of sand on the Southern California coast. That site alone would have been enough, but when the Rosewood Miramar Beach opened in 2019, the development team chose to build something that felt less like a new hotel than a private estate that had always been there. The original Miramar Hotel, a beloved if somewhat ramshackle institution that anchored this address for over a century before closing in 2000, haunted every design decision. Architect Rafael Berkowitz and interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud worked to honor that memory without replicating it, producing 161 rooms and suites across low-slung, two-story cottages and a main manor house with hipped roofs, white-railed balconies, and grey slate detailing against the Santa Ynez mountains. Champalimaud's interiors strike a balance between East Coast nautical and California ease — navy velvet ottomans and chevron-patterned rugs anchor rooms papered in fine ticking stripe, while nailhead-trimmed dining chairs and warm walnut floors keep the atmosphere from feeling too summery or slight. The beachfront restaurant opens its entire ocean-facing wall at sunset, a wall of folding glass panels dissolving the boundary between the lacquered bar and the terrace beyond. At the pool, yellow-and-white striped cabanas recall the resort's mid-century golden era with enough graphic confidence to feel entirely contemporary.

"My wife and I stayed here in room 235 (a "Lanai King") for two nights in May 2026. Positives: • The towels stood out immediately. Easily the best I’ve come across, even compared to other high-end stays. Rosewood clearly pays attention to small details, and it shows. The bath and shower setup made you want to linger just to justify using them. • The room was thoughtfully laid out and easy to live in. The bed was genuinely comfortable, the carpet looked fresh and clean, and the lanai ended up being a daily ritual spot for coffee in the morning. • The Manor Bar was a highlight of the stay. We went both nights and the cocktails were well executed and presented with some creativity without feeling overdone. We paired them with uni toast, oysters, and caviar. Service was dialed in, and the live music plus comfortable seating made it a place you actually want to spend time, not just pass through. • Breakfast at the Revere Room was solid. The food was well prepared and the service was attentive without being intrusive, which made for an easy start to the day. • The grounds are one of the property’s strongest assets. Between the beach, open lawn, bowling area, and blooming jacaranda trees, there’s a lot of space to spread out and enjoy. It never felt crowded. • The complimentary bikes, including e-bikes, were a nice touch. After signing a quick waiver, we rode into Montecito and enjoyed the fresh air. Negatives: • The pricing is hard to ignore. Everything runs expensive, even by luxury hotel standards. One night at the Manor Bar, two cocktails and a single appetizer came out to $130 before tip. Spa pricing was in the same range. It adds up quickly and changes how freely you use the amenities. • The overall crowd may not be for everyone. It skewed more old-money East Coast than typical California, which gives the place a certain tone. Depending on your preferences, that can either feel polished or a bit self-conscious."

"I stayed here for several nights on a business trip recently. The property is lovely. Most rooms are well off the beach and do not have an ocean view, but they all center off beautiful grounds with garden views. The property is immaculate. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. I had the opportunity to each at two of their restaurants and both were amazing, the sushi restaurant was particularly awesome and rivaled some of the very expensive sushi I had in Tokyo a couple months before. It is a short walk to the beach from the rooms and there is a funny train track that cuts the property in half, but the trains do not go by and night and very quiet somehow. The service is impeccable. I also found its location great, it was a short jaunt into town and the house car can take you."

"Stayed at the Rosewood Miramar for my birthday and brought my parents with me, and it ended up being such a special trip. From the moment we got there, the service really stood out. Federico helped with all our luggage right away, and Daniel at the front desk surprised us with an upgrade to a beachfront unit. I genuinely wasn’t expecting that at all, it was kind of shocking walking in. Waking up to the sound of the ocean every morning was unreal. The pools were great overall. I started at the adults-only pool but the service was a little slow at first, so I ended up going to the family pool instead. Completely different experience. Nick helped me get set up right away and brought over a menu. Night and day. One thing that really stuck with me: while I was at the pool, my parents went to a driving range nearby and forgot their hats. The valet team ended up giving them hats at no charge, which they were so touched by. It’s little things like that that make a place stand out. Breakfast was amazing, and dinner at Caruso’s was definitely a highlight. Also want to call out Kai from valet, he was always so warm and welcoming every time we came and went. I’d definitely recommend staying here, especially if you’re celebrating something special."

"There are hotels you visit, and then there are places that quietly become part of your life, the Rosewood Miramar Beach is the latter. Tim, the front desk manager, sets the tone from the very first moment. His warmth, attentiveness, and genuinely caring personality are so evident in all he does. He has that rare ability to make you feel not like a guest passing through, but like someone truly known and welcomed. Every interaction with him feels thoughtful, effortless, and deeply sincere. What makes the Rosewood Miramar Beach so extraordinary is that it transcends the idea of a “stay.” It’s not simply a hotel it’s a place that feels familiar, like a second home. There is a rare sense of belonging here, created entirely by the people who make it what it is. Tim at the forefront of that. This has truly become our home away from home, the kind of place you carry with you long after you leave. Tim, thank you again for your exceptional care and for making every visit feel so special. We are so incredibly appreciative to know you!"
