PB hotel design editorial

Where Eucalyptus Lane meets the Pacific in Montecito, a compound of white-painted shingle-style pavilions spreads across nearly six beachfront acres — one of the last privately held stretches of sand on the Southern California coast. That site alone would have been enough, but when the Rosewood Miramar Beach opened in 2019, the development team chose to build something that felt less like a new hotel than a private estate that had always been there. The original Miramar Hotel, a beloved if somewhat ramshackle institution that anchored this address for over a century before closing in 2000, haunted every design decision. Architect Rafael Berkowitz and interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud worked to honor that memory without replicating it, producing 161 rooms and suites across low-slung, two-story cottages and a main manor house with hipped roofs, white-railed balconies, and grey slate detailing against the Santa Ynez mountains. Champalimaud's interiors strike a balance between East Coast nautical and California ease — navy velvet ottomans and chevron-patterned rugs anchor rooms papered in fine ticking stripe, while nailhead-trimmed dining chairs and warm walnut floors keep the atmosphere from feeling too summery or slight. The beachfront restaurant opens its entire ocean-facing wall at sunset, a wall of folding glass panels dissolving the boundary between the lacquered bar and the terrace beyond. At the pool, yellow-and-white striped cabanas recall the resort's mid-century golden era with enough graphic confidence to feel entirely contemporary.

"We love an upscale 5 star hotel, and this ranks as one of our fav. There is something uniquely elegant about this place, and you don't really get "it" until you are there. Dogs and babies everywhere - but not in an annoying way. We were there without our kids and it still very much caters to a couples getaway vibe as well. The clientele is a very polished West Coast but somehow Nantucket-feeling crowd. Staff/service is amazing. Personable, kind, above and beyond. Rooms are stunning. We stayed in a a garden bungalow room which were one story buildings that had a very private outdoor area to beautiful gardens. The food was amazing everywhere we ate. For a special experience try Caruso's."

"The hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful as the gardeners are perfectionists. The rooms we had were well appointed and generous in size. Unfortunately, there were so many issues with the team work in other areas, that it made the stay extremely disappointing. The pool staff ( except for the 2 ladies taking food and drink orders ) was lazy and negligent in taking care of the pool area. Glasses and food items were left for hours before being cleaned up. They were more concerned with their conversations with each other at the bar area than taking care of the guests. Housekeeping was also flawed with not servicing the room as requested and agreed to. We had to call several times for the same reasons. They also left areas outside the room unattended as some disrespectful guests left glasses outside rooms and they were there for days. At breakfast we would ask for a table and each day, we’re told it would be about 10 minutes to get a table ready. When you looked inside most of the tables were empty and fully set and available, but we had to wait. At the front desk, organization and communication was lacking. We were never told or given information on activities and how to make sure we were to properly apply room charges. On one of our rooms they mistakenly identified it as checked out and we couldn’t get access. We had to go back to the front desk to correct the situation. At checkout we spent about 1/2 hour reviewing our bill and had to make many charges as they were not properly entered. In total, this Rosewood location needs to initiate a total review and training of its employees and departments. It’s true potential is not close to being maximized and deserves the score I provided."

"Awesome property great for families . We were in the one bedroom suite which was really nice and layout was great. Need more amenities in the room (face wash, sun screen) Only issues I had is I feel like they were overwhelmed with the July 4th crowd. House car forgot to pick us up after confirming from the restaurant. Called got hung up on eventually had to take an uber after 45mins of waiting, with a 4yr old that’s hard. after the front desk was apologetic they said they would do something nice. Till we called back the next day we didn’t hear from them. Eventually they picked up dinner one night that was nice of them. For the prices you pay these small things matter or we would stay at another spot. Hope to give this place another shot someday"

"Living just 2 hours away I have been wanting to visit and stay at this property for the past few years. The sole reason I did not pull the trigger was the price. Don’t get me wrong paying $2,500 and up for a room, luckily is not an issue for us , but for a stay in Montecito not beachfront made me think twice. Well in late April my wife and I took a 5 day mini vacation and drove the coast up to Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur ( review coming ). Not wanting to make the drive in one shot back I finally decided to stop at Rosewood Miramar for one night. I can only say WOW !! Now I get it. From the moment you enter the gated driveway you are treated like you are the only guest on property. Greeted as you get out of your car and taken to registration. Not sure if it was Because I checked in on my birthday but they upgraded us to an ocean front suite. The room was simply perfect ! Every detail and amenity is on point. The grounds are pristine and they are so pet friendly it’s a pleasure. The restaurants are great and the bar is over the top. I just did not want to leave. There is no bad room on property as I checked it all out. Obviously the ocean front rooms are the best but the bungalow garden rooms are beautiful. Ana the concierge was A+. Handling everything prior to our arrival and anything we needed during our stay. I just can’t say enough great things. Well the only thing to add, before checking out I made a reservation for the weekend of memorial weekend which again was perfect with all the activities they set up ! So again not wanting to leave I again booked another reservation for the up coming 4th of July weekend. Can’t wait !! Price is definitely not for everyone but if you can afford it, I highly recommend it!!"
