PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1889 at the height of Aspen's silver boom, the Italianate brick building at the corner of Main and Mill Streets was conceived as a monument to the town's sudden prosperity — three stories of red brick arcades and corbelled cornices that announced civic ambition as much as commercial hospitality. Hotel Jerome has been the social anchor of Aspen ever since, surviving the silver crash of 1893, decades of near-abandonment, and a 2012 restoration by Auberge Resorts that brought the property back to 94 rooms without erasing the weight of its original character. Interior designer Champalimaud Design led that renovation, working to calibrate between preservation and comfort rather than simply polishing the building into period-costume pastiche. The lobby delivers the darker register of that brief — cast-iron columns, coffered ceilings painted in deep charcoal, a portrait-hung fireplace flanked by tufted leather Chesterfield sofas and tall blue-and-white porcelain floor vases, the geometry of the encaustic tile floor cutting between the columns with unexpected graphic confidence. The bar preserves its pressed-tin ceiling and original back-bar millwork, draped crystal chandeliers catching the light above leather counter stools in dark nailhead trim. Guest rooms move into warmer territory: channeled walnut headboards, cork-textured wallcovering, polished nickel pendants, and campaign-chest case goods in ebonized oak — the effect closer to a well-appointed private club than a mountain resort hotel, which is precisely the point.

About

Hotel Jerome has been the social hub of Aspen since its opening in 1889, at the height of the town's silver boom. Known as the place where all great stories were born and are told. As the only Aspen hotel to survive the silver crash, the long pre-ski resort winters, and the Depression, we've seen cowboys ride through our doors, 10th Mountain Division soldiers gather around pints after training on the slopes, and Hunter S. Thompson hold court during his run for sheriff. You can't experience Aspen without experiencing the Jerome.

"Everything was nice. Great service and the rooms have the perfect Aspen vibe. There's not enough light in the rooms. Bring a flashlight and Headlamp (not kidding). Otherwise very nice with great service. Note that the bar is very popular and fills up every evening. They have a hostess to tame the crowd but don't expect to hope in a grab a drink. Go to the restaurant of other bar to get around that"

"Everything about this hotel is perfect! This was my second visit and it was even better than the first! From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by everything, the staff, the service, the decor, the amenities. This has quickly become one of my favorite ski town properties. We also enjoyed the complimentary transportation to the mountains/ around town! We are already looking forward to our next trip :)"

"My best friend and I just got back from Hotel Jerome, and we had the most lovely experience! From the moment we landed to the moment we left. The hotel has the most "Aspen" feel; the staff is so kind; the room is cozy; the food is delicious; and the location is prime! Perfect spot to stay, whether you just want to après and explore the town or plan to ski every day."

"We’ve been visiting Hotel Jerome for several years with family and friends, and this year’s stay was absolutely perfect. Peter and the front office team were outstanding from arrival through departure. Steve and the concierge team went above and beyond to handle a special request for me — thoughtful, responsive, and genuinely helpful. Adrien and Alexia were welcome faces each evening and took excellent care of us. We stayed in a residential suite, which was spacious, comfortable, and ideal for our group. It gave us plenty of room to gather while still feeling private and relaxed. Hotel Jerome truly feels like a home away from home in Aspen. We’re already looking forward to our visit next year."
