PB hotel design editorial

Vertical cedar cladding over a dark brick base gives Mollie Aspen an exterior grammar that feels closer to a Japanese urban hotel than a Colorado ski lodge — a deliberate choice by New York firm Champalimaud Design, who handled both architecture and interiors when the property opened on Main Street in 2021. The 68-room building sits four storeys on a tight downtown Aspen plot, its black-framed windows and warm timber panels stepping back from the street in a rhythm that avoids the faux-rustic stonework endemic to mountain resort towns. Inside, Champalimaud drew a straight line between Alpine materiality and midcentury craft: white oak coffered ceilings repeat through guest rooms and public spaces alike, grounding an interior palette of raw plaster walls, sisal-toned carpets, and hand-woven textile wall hangings in earthy reds and ochres. Guest rooms carry the calm of a well-edited Japanese inn — low-profile oak bed frames with woven cane panels, ribbed pendant lanterns, desk chairs upholstered in boucle — while the bar trades on a richer register: an all-oak coffered ceiling drops pendant globe lights over a blackened stone counter, brass back-bar panels flanked by open shelving, and deep tobacco-leather lounge chairs arranged around a white brick fireplace. The furniture throughout mixes custom pieces with what appears to be vintage European seating — corduroy sectionals, slatted oak armchairs — giving the communal spaces the feeling of a private mountain residence assembled over time rather than delivered in a single fit-out.

"Absolutely fantastic stay at Mollie Aspen. Arrived very early into shoulder season after a disappointing stay in Vail, which was basically shut down. We found Aspen to be much more vibrant and walkable. The highlight of our stay was the attentive, friendly, professional service by the entire staff. The manager honored our request to arrive a day early and upgraded our room selection. The rooms were well appointed and exceptionally comfortable. Attended an excellent, very informative wine tasting. Petit Trois restaurant and rooftop bar were excellent. The star of the show was the caring and professional service by each staff member."

"We had the most incredible stay at MOLLIE Aspen and cannot recommend it highly enough. From the moment we arrived, the staff was exceptional—incredibly welcoming, attentive, and clearly dedicated to making sure every guest has a seamless experience. The location is hard to beat. Being directly across from the bus stop to the mountains made our ski mornings so easy and stress-free, yet the hotel is perfectly walkable to town for shopping, dinning and exploring. It’s the ideal balance of convenience and quiet luxury. A few highlights from our trip: • The Food: Every meal was outstanding. The culinary program here is top-tier; we found ourselves wanting to eat at the hotel just as much as venturing out. • The Rooftop Hot Tub: This was the "wow" factor for us. Soaking in the hot tub while sipping on their expertly crafted cocktails was the perfect way to wind down after a day on the slopes. • The Vibe: The design is gorgeous, but it still feels warm and inviting. We are already counting down the days until we can come back. If you’re looking for a modern, high-end, and perfectly situated stay in Aspen, MOLLIE is it!"

"We chose MOLLIE Aspen as it was on Chase Edit and was rewarded a 1 Michelin Key. We have stayed at a handful of Michelin Key hotels and we have seen and experienced the differences that set a standard hotel and a 1 Michelin Key hotel apart. It’s normally in the small details where guests are not put in a place to make requests and instead things are anticipated and ready. Before anything else, we'd like to acknowledge that supporting staff like servers, valet, and housekeepers were very hospitable. The amenities like toiletries and humidifier (a nice touch for the winter) were also appreciated but house slippers ready in the room would have been a plus. Here are the areas where MOLLIE Aspen fell short: 1. Prior to check in, we did a quick dummy search to see if we would be able to receive an upgrade through my iPrefer membership and Chase Edit since it's based on availability. There was a room available so at check-in, I asked about the complimentary upgrade and was told that it would require extra payment. We brought this up with Chase travel and when the travel associate at Chase reached out to the hotel manager the story changed to there are no rooms available. 2. Like mentioned above what sets a standard hotel apart from a 1 Michelin Key, is the anticipation. Based on our benefits, there’s usually a welcome gift waiting in the room and one was not set up. Again, when it was brought up with front desk, they did immediately remediate but it’s a world of difference to not put the work on the guest to ask. 3. We love supporting pet friendly hotels and sometime we run into truly pet friendly hotels (especially European properties) and some are just pet tolerating hotels. MOLLIE Aspen is sort of in between. What would put them at another level is offering a small token of appreciation such as an option for a small or big dog toy, local treats, or toiletries, etc. Overall, you do get what they say they offer but kind of indifferent to the fact that they are pushed on Chase Edit and as a 1 Michelin Key. If I had known Chase Edit wasn't that big of a deal I would have booked at one of the other properties I was considering."
