PB hotel design editorial

Vertical cedar cladding over a dark brick base gives Mollie Aspen an exterior grammar that feels closer to a Japanese urban hotel than a Colorado ski lodge — a deliberate choice by New York firm Champalimaud Design, who handled both architecture and interiors when the property opened on Main Street in 2021. The 68-room building sits four storeys on a tight downtown Aspen plot, its black-framed windows and warm timber panels stepping back from the street in a rhythm that avoids the faux-rustic stonework endemic to mountain resort towns. Inside, Champalimaud drew a straight line between Alpine materiality and midcentury craft: white oak coffered ceilings repeat through guest rooms and public spaces alike, grounding an interior palette of raw plaster walls, sisal-toned carpets, and hand-woven textile wall hangings in earthy reds and ochres. Guest rooms carry the calm of a well-edited Japanese inn — low-profile oak bed frames with woven cane panels, ribbed pendant lanterns, desk chairs upholstered in boucle — while the bar trades on a richer register: an all-oak coffered ceiling drops pendant globe lights over a blackened stone counter, brass back-bar panels flanked by open shelving, and deep tobacco-leather lounge chairs arranged around a white brick fireplace. The furniture throughout mixes custom pieces with what appears to be vintage European seating — corduroy sectionals, slatted oak armchairs — giving the communal spaces the feeling of a private mountain residence assembled over time rather than delivered in a single fit-out.

"Definitely recommend the Mollie! The room was great! The rooftop was amazing"

"We loved our stay at the Mollie in Aspen! The young lady at the front desk was amazing! She remembered my name and greeted me every time I came through the lobby! We had breakfast this morning in the restaurant and it took a little bit of time to get our food. They comped our cappuccino, which was so nice of them! We would stay here again in a heartbeat!"

"Terrible service. Nobody at the desk to answer my calls. Stuck-up Aspenites working here. If you want an upscale place, Aspen is FULL of them. Located on a busy street, the rooms are loud."

"We had a wonderful stay at Mollie Aspen and would absolutely return and recommend it to friends and family. The location is excellent, and every member of the hotel staff was truly exceptional — thoughtful, kind, welcoming, and attentive throughout our stay. The cleanliness was outstanding, the hotel was very comfortable, and the design felt both beautiful and warm. The coffee shop serves excellent coffee, and the food both at the café and the restaurant was delicious. Thank you for such a lovely experience!!"

"The best in Aspen , hands down. I must mention the exceptional level of service that the staff and management deliver 24/7 is very special. The recent addition of the LA based restaurant Petit Trois puts The Mollie in another class."
