PB hotel design editorial

At the base of Aspen Mountain, where the gondola lifts away from the edge of town and the ski runs begin, there is precisely one ski-in, ski-out hotel on the Colorado resort's main slope. The Little Nell has held that position since 1989, when developer Michael Stranahan commissioned a chalet-scaled building whose steeply pitched rooflines, red-trimmed balconies, and warm beige cladding were calibrated to sit comfortably within Aspen's Victorian mining-town streetscape without resorting to pastiche. At four stories, the massing stays human in scale — close enough to the gondola terminal that guests in ski boots can step directly from the slopes. Interiors across the 92 rooms and suites were extensively renovated in the 2010s, moving away from the property's earlier rustic register toward a palette of warm greys, textured linens, and walnut-toned case pieces that carry the atmosphere of a well-appointed mountain residence rather than a ski lodge. Attic-level suites gain particular character from their sloped ceilings and plantation-shuttered dormer windows, while lower-floor rooms open toward mountain views through generous bay windows framed by floor-length linen drapery. The restaurant, Element 47, named for silver's atomic number in a nod to Aspen's mining heritage, presents a darkly sophisticated dining room — geometric LED ceiling panels, vertical timber screens, upholstered banquettes in warm greige — that sits in deliberate contrast to the alpine vernacular of the facade. The courtyard pool, framed in summer by a vivid living flower wall, completes the picture.

"The staff at The Little Nell went above and beyond to make this trip special for my son who just completed chemotherapy. From the front desk to the concierge team (and everyone in between) they always knew us by name and looked for every opportunity to upgrade our experience. Both my sons (ages 8 and 10) declared this the best hotel ever and they want to come back for a much longer stay. They absolutely provided 5 star service and we felt very welcomed and pampered the entire time. We love The Little Nell!!"

"We stayed here 8/9 for one night and had a lovely time. The property is beautiful and we loved our room. The transportation staff were super friendly and helpful. All was great until after we checked out and I realized I left my new phone charger plugged in next to the bed. I called and was told it was not found in the room or in lost and found. I hope whoever is now using my charger is enjoying it, as it was definitely left there."

"I had the absolute pleasure of staying at The Little Nell in Aspen, and it was nothing short of exceptional. The service here is truly world-class, and special recognition goes to Greta and Josh from the Concierge Team. They were incredibly helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable—whether I needed recommendations, help with bookings, or just a quick chat, they were always there with a smile and genuine interest in making my stay unforgettable. My room was spacious and thoughtfully designed, with a cozy fireplace that made the evenings feel especially relaxing. The private balcony offered stunning views, and it was the perfect spot to enjoy a quiet moment with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Every detail in the room, from the linens to the lighting, reflected true luxury and comfort. The location couldn’t be better—right in the heart of Aspen with easy access to everything, including direct ski-in/ski-out access if you’re there in winter. It made exploring the town and surrounding nature effortless and enjoyable. I left feeling completely refreshed and well taken care of. I hope to return soon—this place is a gem!"

"My mom and I just spent 4 nights at The Little Nell and it exceeded our expectations! From our airport pick up to our airport drop off, everything was wonderful. The staff is so kind and friendly. They are willing to help with anything. The room was spacious and very comfortable. There’s ample closet and storage space and the bathroom (especially with the two sinks) is so nice. I found the beds to be very comfortable, as well. I loved the design of the hotel - it is very modern yet still feels warm. The coffee in the mornings is a nice touch, which I’ve found many hotels do not do anymore. I spent a few afternoons at the pool and it is so relaxing with beautiful views. Element 47 has a fantastic breakfast. I loved every minute of being there! Can’t wait to visit again."
