PB hotel design editorial

Red brick rising against the silver flanks of Aspen Mountain, the neo-Victorian massing of the St. Regis Aspen was always a considered provocation — a formal, almost East Coast institutional grammar transplanted to a Colorado ski town more accustomed to rough-hewn timber and corrugated metal. Opened in 1992 and designed with pointed dormers, arched entrance portals, and a clocktower spire that asserts itself against the treeline, the building draws its architectural DNA from the Victorian-era mining-boom structures that once defined Aspen's civic identity, reinterpreting that heritage at a scale the original silver barons could only have imagined. The courtyard, visible in the images, arranges a circular pool within a sheltered brick enclosure that moderates the mountain setting into something closer to a private residential garden. Inside, the 179 rooms navigate between the building's period ambitions and a more contemporary sensibility. Guest rooms show a layered approach — saddle-brown leather platform beds with high wingback headboards sit alongside blue wool armchairs and nailhead-trimmed ottomans in heather grey, patterned carpets drawing out the mountain palette in abstracted topographic forms. Ikat-print cushions and campaign-style desks in cognac leather give lighter rooms a collected, traveled feeling. The restaurant carries a deliberately rougher register: reclaimed timber frames the open kitchen pass, jagged plaster ceiling forms scatter light across dark-leather dining chairs, the whole space leaning into an alpine lodge reference without surrendering entirely to it.

"I booked a 4-night stay for me and my wife to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, a few days before we were scheduled to arrive, my wife had complications from an abdominal hysterectomy that was done about 8 weeks prior. The hotel’s reservations manager, Mark Loyola, was made aware of the circumstances days ahead of our arrival and refused to refund a single penny of our 4 nights, despite efforts made both directly to him and by American Express on our behalf. We weren’t even offered a credit to use towards a future stay. BUYER BEWARE, management of this hotel cares only about their profits, not people or issues (in our case unanticipated health/post-surgery issues) that arise in life. The hotel also had many other rooms available for the nights we booked, so we hadn’t excluded other people from booking a stay. We’ve booked the highest-end hotels and resorts across the country, Europe, the Caribbean, etc. over the years and have never dealt with such cold, brutal management. Thought everyone should be aware of what they are dealing with at this property."

"The private car picking me up at the airport (hotel shuttle available), greeted at the front desk with a glass of champagne, lucky to be able to secure early check-in (based on room availability), butler service (based on room category) irons 2 items a day, unpacks for me and brings coffee every morning, housekeeping daily (spotting them changing the sheets everyday) with turndown service in the evening freshening the room and breakfast in bed every morning with my Marriott benefit. The full service amenities with the staff smiling made me feel like a princess!"

"The St. Regis checks all the boxes for a 5-star experience. My family has been coming to the hotel for years and we have made relationships with several of the staff who make it easy to want to come back annually. We used Aspen Empire Limousine for our transportation needs this year and they are top notch. Highly recommend."

"We just returned from a June stay at the St. Regis and have nothing but great things to say. The trip was part business, part pleasure. My husband had meetings the first three days, and while the conference coordinators deserve credit for the planning, the hotel handled 300+ attendees seamlessly. That alone tells you a lot about the level of professionalism here. The leisure portion is where the St. Regis really shines. The location is unbeatable, walking distance to downtown Aspen, which made everything easy. They offer complimentary bikes and water bottles, so we spent a morning biking around town taking in beautiful Aspen. A small but lovely touch that made a big difference. The pool area was gorgeous. The lounge chairs were the most comfortable we've sat in, the cocktails were excellent, and the pool menu was really good. Pool service was attentive without being overbearing. The courtyard had a wonderfully serene vibe — though we were told winter Saturdays look completely different, with a big après ski party scene. Apparently, two totally different experiences depending on the season. The Mountain Lounge is sleek and cozy, exactly what you want after a day out. Rooms were spotless, beds were comfortable, and we never had a single complaint about any staff member. Everyone was warm, accommodating, and genuinely seemed happy to be there. For a June stay, we found the pricing reasonable given what you're getting. You're paying for convenience and a level of service that's hard to match. We'd come back in a heartbeat."
