PB hotel design editorial

At 8,100 feet above sea level on a ski-in, ski-out slope in Beaver Creek's Bachelor Gulch village, a compound of hand-hewn log construction and rough-cut stone rises against the Gore Range in a massing that deliberately echoes the great National Park lodges of the early twentieth century. The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch, designed by architect Barry Begel and opened in 2002, extends across roughly 180 rooms and residences arranged in interconnected wings that step down the mountain in a series of gabled dormers, stacked-timber balconies, and fieldstone chimneys — an approach that keeps the building from registering as a single institutional block and instead gives it the feeling of a high-altitude village assembled over time. Inside, a recent refresh has pulled the guest rooms away from their original dark-rustic register toward something considerably more considered: reclaimed-wood plank ceilings, warm linen-toned wallcovering, and leather-trimmed upholstered benches sit alongside Colorado-themed artwork — an elk portrait above one headboard, a high-plains landscape above another — that grounds the palette without leaning into kitsch. The restaurant spaces work a taller, more dramatic scale, with amber-stained leather wall panels and live-edge communal tables anchored beneath large-format aspen-grove canvases. The heated outdoor pool, steaming against winter air at dusk, frames the full timber-and-stone elevation in a way that makes the building's ambitions legible: this is mountain architecture reaching for permanence rather than novelty.

"This is the best ski hotel we have ever stayed at. Was here for 9 nights over presidents week. The lift is right out the back door. Every restaurant had the best food. We ended up eating at the hotel most nights because we couldn't get enough of it. The vibe is mountain cozy yet very luxurious. All of the staff was super helpful. Housekeeping was on point. The bars outside and music were a perfect end to the day Would 100 percent recommend. It is a magical place."

"ame here for lunch. Bought meals plus alcohol, but apparently they won’t let you use the bathroom because the hotel is block out by a certain party. Then don’t have people eat at your restaurants but don’t open the restaurant’s bathroom to patrons."

"Driving up to the property is magical and the valet/bellman were very welcoming. It went downhill from there though (with a couple exceptions). Front desk check-in experience lacked a warm welcome and felt about as special as checking in via an app or kiosk. The room itself very average - nothing memorable. Service overall was pretty atrocious. Attempts to dial to make restaurant reservations and request amenities for the room were met with unanswered phone lines. The hot tub wasn't working, which was a huge disappointment for my family. The hostesses and waitresses at the restaurants were friendly but seemed completely overwhelmed. We ate at both WYLD and Buffalos and service was painfully slow at both - at Buffalos we sat for about 45 minutes before being able to place an order (and the restaurant wasn't even full - probably just understaffed). I will say the food was excellent though at both restaurants - the chicken schnitzel at WYLD was perfection. Room service for breakfast was a let down though - overly salted eggs and potatoes. Overall, the hotel was not the special experience for my family that I was hoping it would be to kick off our ski trip in Avon."

"This hotel has legionaries disease and they didn’t tell us on check in. They haven’t closed the pool or steam room which my teenage children went in. I was walking around the spa steam room and hot tub. Gross negligence on behalf of the Ritz for not telling its customers and prioritizing money over health."

"We’ve been here many times and were shocked how bad the Ritz-Carlton has gotten recently. The location is still good and the amenities are potentially still good if they are working, which most were not. The hot tub area and much of the spa was out of order the entire time we were there. The biggest negative impact to our stay was the insanely loud DJ and “apres-ski” event that happened every single day of our stay outside the back of the hotel. Before the lifts close, there is loud music playing but it is not extreme enough to be an issue, just annoying if you are trying to enjoy yourself, relax, or use the public parts of the hotel. At 3:30 however, a DJ arrives and the volume is UNBELIEVABLE for the next several hours. We could not use our room, have a conversation, watch tv, read, or do anything else. The lobby and bar, even though they are indoors and not directly in front of the speakers are still loud enough to prevent meeting friends, socializing, or using the main part of the hotel. None of the people “enjoying” this DJ seem to be guests, so rather than taking care of their paying guests and giving us a high end experience the hotel prefers to cater to a boorish crowd of drinkers who love techno so loud that it shakes pictures off of the walls. As guests, we’ve paid high prices to stay here and are given a very low-end experience. Management always seems to be “away” and hotel staff feign ignorance about when (every day) and what hours (much longer than the supposed 3:30 to 5) the DJ will be doing this. Even in the spa, which is nowhere near the event, we could hear each and every word of the music. Good luck having a relaxing treatment there. The overall message to guests at the Ritz-Carlton is, “We don’t care about you or your experience here, we just want to sell a lot of alcohol”."
