PB hotel design editorial

Cherry Creek's position as Denver's most refined shopping district — a neighbourhood of galleries, independent boutiques, and serious restaurants that exists at a remove from the downtown convention corridor — gave Hotel Clio a particular brief: to serve a clientele that arrives by choice rather than by conference schedule. The property, a Marriott Luxury Collection hotel set within a twelve-storey tower on East 2nd Avenue, underwent a comprehensive repositioning and rebrand from its former life as a JW Marriott, emerging with 199 rooms dressed in a palette that mirrors the Colorado landscape rather than generic luxury convention. Guest rooms carry warm taupe upholstered headboards with brushed metal detailing, walnut-toned case goods, and patterned carpets in ash and stone that suggest high-country terrain; floor-to-ceiling windows frame views ranging from the Front Range to the Cherry Creek rooftops below. The food and beverage program grounds the property in its Western setting more convincingly than the architecture alone might manage. The restaurant spaces layer rough-cut sandstone walls against slatted dark-stained wood ceilings, large-format bison paintings lending an energy that sits closer to contemporary Western art than frontier kitsch. Cognac leather bar stools line a curved counter beneath a steel grid canopy, while the adjoining terrace — strung with bistro lighting and anchored by an outdoor fireplace — pulls the interior warmth outward toward the street, giving Hotel Clio a genuine point of connection with the neighbourhood rather than the sealed, self-referential quality that luxury hotel dining so often defaults to.

"Great location. Rooms are well maintained. Enjoyed the lobby with inside and outside seating. It was a busy weekend, and there was a dog crying on our floor for quite sometime and I had to alert the desk. Surprised that housekeeping or security did not act sooner. Breakfast and lunch at Toro was excellent!"

"The Clio is a better example of the "Luxury Collection". Ever feel like Marriot (and Hilton) have so many "brands" that you have a hard time getting any sort of idea what the thru-line is? The Clio is a good version of "the Luxury Collection". Personally...I'd swap the Denver Ritz with the Clio (very underwhelming Ritz). Only downside of the Clio is the "Mountain View" is....about the same as a suburban home having a "mountain view". Check in has always been very accomodating, if a bit long winded. Yes, I've stayed in a hotel before...actually you know what now that I wrote that I take it back. Check-in staff has consistently explained hotel ammenities every time and I can appreciate that. Ever stayed somewhere and found out on accident that there was a pool? (you won't have that issue at the Clio on account of no pool being present but I digress). So yeah I appreciate that they explain what is on property and how to access. The hotel restaurant "Toro" is genuinely good enough to stand on it's own. Both Dinner and Breakfast have been fantastic every time. Cherry Creek has plenty of good restaurants but you wouldn't be taking the easy option by dining at Toro. Rooms have always been impeccably clean. Maybe a bit bland but not leaning too heavily on the spartan aesthetic where you pretend to enjoy a stripped down room with a white wall and a single coat peg as being "cutting edge". Linens have always been crisp and clean. Mattress is a touch too firm for my liking. Showers are quite pleasant...and like 99% of the population...I have no idea about the bath tub because who uses a hotel bath tub? Overall....I would reccomend the Clio as superior to the Ritz (although the Denver Ritz....is probably ready to adventure out into a new brand). Service is far better than average. Toro is a stand-out all by itself. Rooms are bland...but clean and well maintained. Views are "meh"."

"My wife and I stayed at Hotel Clio last weekend for my birthday. Braxton, who works at the front desk, was so kind and thoughtful and, later on, he surprised us by putting together a birthday gift basket that was awaiting us in our room upon our return from dinner. It was filled with Colorado beers and other Colorado made food products. Such a special touch! Thanks Braxton!"

"I’ve stayed at this hotel many times and had a good experience. Not this time. First off the hotel has restricted the room air conditioning. The room thermostat looks like it’s trying to cool the room but it’s restricted. I had my room temperature never go below 74. I told the front desk and no change. I selected 66. Still no change! What a miserable nights sleep I got!!! Then on top of this one of the main Lobby elevators was out of service for two days. One time it took me 8 minutes to have the elevator come to the 11th floor. Over all not even close to a luxury experience!! Avoid. This hotel is loosing its reputation!!!"
