PB hotel design editorial

Directly beneath a working chairlift — skiers gliding overhead while guests recline on teal-cushioned loungers beside a steaming outdoor pool — the Viceroy Snowmass announces its position in the mountain landscape with an unusually literal kind of access. Opened in 2010 within the Base Village development at Snowmass, the seven-story property was designed by OZ Architecture and delivers 173 rooms and residences clad in a combination of warmth-toned stucco, rough-cut stone base courses, and dark-painted timber bracketing that draws from the vernacular vocabulary of Colorado mountain construction without quite committing to the rusticity those references imply. Inside, the interiors manage a similar calibration — comfortable rather than cabin-like, with a palette built around warm sand walls, dark-stained walnut bed frames, linen upholstery, and accent textiles that evoke aspen bark and alpine meadow in equal measure. Freestanding soaking tubs positioned open to the bedroom and ribbed black stone feature walls bring a more contemporary edge to the suites, while the restaurant's slatted cedar ceiling, stacked-slate columns, reclaimed wood paneling, and Scandinavian-influenced dining chairs with leather seat pads pull the interior toward something warmer and more considered than most ski-resort dining rooms manage. The layering of materials throughout — stone against warm-toned plaster, pale ash against dark walnut — keeps the whole property feeling grounded in its Colorado setting without retreating into theme.

"This was our second stay at the Viceroy, and it was just as impressive as the first. What really stands out is the consistency. Everything is done at a very high level, and the staff genuinely seems to care about making sure guests have a great experience. A special thank you to Sharon Putman, Director of Rooms. Sharon does an amazing job, and her attention to detail shows throughout the property. From the front desk staff to housekeeping, everyone was friendly, professional, and eager to help. The hotel is extremely well maintained. Our room was spotless, the common areas were always clean and inviting, and the gym was in excellent condition. It's clear that the property is very well managed. The booking process was easy, check-in was seamless, and honestly, I can't think of anything they could have done better. Everything went exactly as it should. For the quality of the accommodations and service, the value is exceptional. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend the Viceroy to anyone looking for a first-class hotel experience."

"During our stay, several issues impacted the experience. At check-in, we were not provided with the room that had been previously agreed upon with the hotel. Staff requested to see the email correspondence regarding the booking and then proceeded to read the entire email thread out loud at the front desk in a public setting while discussing the reservation issue. Additionally, our friends in the adjoining room encountered multiple housekeeping concerns. After the room was cleaned, a used cleaning rag was left on the bed. They were also provided with dirty bedding for the pull-out bed, including a blanket with visible makeup stains. When they contacted the front desk regarding the bedding issue, a staff member was sent to the room but was unable to assist directly due to a language barrier and not being informed of the problem beforehand. On the second night of our stay, our children were cold while going to bed, so we called the front desk to request extra blankets. We were told they would arrive in approximately five minutes. After waiting 35 minutes, we called again and were told someone was actively on the way and they would arrive within another five minutes. After an additional 35 minutes without delivery, we called a third time. The blankets ultimately arrived close to midnight, nearly two hours after the initial request. The following morning, we spoke with the front desk to provide feedback and seek assistance resolving the issues. We were told the information would be passed along. Later in the stay, after receiving a text message asking about our experience, it became clear the previous concerns had not been communicated internally, as staff were unaware of the issues we had already reported. We again spoke with the front desk and were told someone would follow up with us the next morning. No one contacted us, and no resolution or follow-up was provided regarding any of the issues reported during the stay. Based on our experience, we would not recommend this hotel. The concerns extended beyond the condition and cleanliness issues encountered during the stay and also included interactions with staff that were, at times, rude and condescending. Multiple issues were reported throughout the stay, yet there was a consistent lack of communication, follow-through, and resolution despite repeated attempts to address the concerns directly with hotel staff."

"My husband and I had such a wonderful time that we have already booked a week next year, despite the cost. We are retired flatlanders so location and convenient amenities mean more ski time. The boot room and ski valet are so helpful, as are the door men/drivers. The front desk saved my husband with first aid when he cut his finger. And a big shout out to Paz, our concierge, for setting up limo transfers and a surprise birthday champagne charcuterie platter in our room after a spa. The one bedroom with full kitchen was perfect and housekeeping was very attentive twice daily. We had groceries delivered so only ate out on my birthday. The Viceroy cannot control the weather or noisy construction, our only negatives. We are looking forward to next winter and thanks to Maricela for helping us set that up, this time with our pet bulldog."

"We had an absolutely incredible stay at the Viceroy Snowmass—without a doubt one of the best hotels in the entire area. From the moment we arrived, the level of service was truly exceptional and made our family feel welcome, comfortable, and taken care of every step of the way. A very special thank you to Jatin at the front desk, who went above and beyond to accommodate all of our needs. He was not only professional, but genuinely kind, patient, and attentive, which made a big difference in our experience. The room itself was beautiful, spacious, and extremely well-equipped. Having a washer and dryer in the unit was incredibly convenient, especially after long days on the slopes, and the microwave made it easy to manage meals with the family. Everything was clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed for comfort. The hotel also offers fantastic dining options, with restaurants that truly exceeded expectations—great atmosphere and delicious food without needing to leave the property. On top of that, the location is unbeatable for skiing and snowboarding, making it a perfect choice for anyone visiting Snowmass. Overall, this was a top-tier experience from start to finish. If you're planning a ski trip or family vacation in Snowmass, the Viceroy is hands down the best choice. Highly, highly recommended!"
