PB hotel design editorial

Directly beneath a working chairlift — skiers gliding overhead while guests recline on teal-cushioned loungers beside a steaming outdoor pool — the Viceroy Snowmass announces its position in the mountain landscape with an unusually literal kind of access. Opened in 2010 within the Base Village development at Snowmass, the seven-story property was designed by OZ Architecture and delivers 173 rooms and residences clad in a combination of warmth-toned stucco, rough-cut stone base courses, and dark-painted timber bracketing that draws from the vernacular vocabulary of Colorado mountain construction without quite committing to the rusticity those references imply. Inside, the interiors manage a similar calibration — comfortable rather than cabin-like, with a palette built around warm sand walls, dark-stained walnut bed frames, linen upholstery, and accent textiles that evoke aspen bark and alpine meadow in equal measure. Freestanding soaking tubs positioned open to the bedroom and ribbed black stone feature walls bring a more contemporary edge to the suites, while the restaurant's slatted cedar ceiling, stacked-slate columns, reclaimed wood paneling, and Scandinavian-influenced dining chairs with leather seat pads pull the interior toward something warmer and more considered than most ski-resort dining rooms manage. The layering of materials throughout — stone against warm-toned plaster, pale ash against dark walnut — keeps the whole property feeling grounded in its Colorado setting without retreating into theme.

About

Viceroy Snowmass is the crown jewel of Snowmass Village, Colorado. Designed by Jean-Michel-Gathy of Denniston International, the resort is environmentally conscious through responsible choices of finishes and materials and is a community leader in green operations and guest service offerings. Recently named the #1 Resort Hotel in Colorado in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2021, the resort offers guests the perfect balance of relaxation and exhilaration. It starts in the lounge, where skiers coast in and out as the snow falls and fire roars during the winter season. It carries through to the restaurant, where the flavors of Colorado high country make you feel right at home. It comes to life in the spa, where you can escape and unwind after a day of skiing, snowboarding, biking, or hiking. With every elevated experience, at any time of year, there’s a certain euphoria in knowing what’s just outside: the cinematic, snow-capped mountains of Snowmass Village.

"Viceroy proved to be a great way to experience Snowmass with its Ski in/out location AND also to enjoy Aspen with its great Valet service and convenient Hotel rides to town. Kids enjoyed the pool area, I enjoyed the fully renovated lobby, bar and Toro restaurant."

"SOOOOO not worth the $$$$$$! Gave me the worst room right by the elevator after making me wait for hours to check in. Weird automatic stuff you need a degree from MIT to figure out how to close the shades because my window over looked the entry to the hotel with very bright lights and noise all night long. Staff was snarky and condescending. Find another place to stay !!!!!!"

"Luxury accommodation, spacious bathroom, nice butler’s kitchen. The Ski valet with heated boot warmers provided an excellent experience!"

"We recently stayed at this property and unfortunately the experience did not meet expectations. This is not five-star quality. At this price point, over $3,000 per night, we expected a far more personalized level of service and stronger amenities. Check-in was disorganized and not particularly welcoming. The property is a maze and no one offered to escort us to our room. The room also had very poor soundproofing, and we could clearly hear conversations next door. When we raised the issue, no meaningful solution was offered and no one followed up. Housekeeping was inconsistent. Our room was not serviced the first day until we called, turndown occurred only once, and extra towels were left in a plastic bag on the floor outside our door. The hotel shuttle was unreliable and left us waiting over 30 minutes in the cold at ski school. The spa was inconsistent as well. My massage was good, but my husband’s was one of the worst he has experienced. Breakfast service was extremely slow, leaving us little choice but to use the buffet, which was mediocre. Overall, the service lacked the coordination, polish, and attention to detail expected from a luxury property. The issues we encountered suggest broader operational shortcomings rather than isolated missteps. Based on this experience, we would not return or recommend this hotel or the Viceroy chain."
