PB hotel design editorial

Judiciary Square sits at the institutional core of Washington, where federal courthouses and municipal buildings set a civic tone that few hotels have ever tried to work with rather than against. Arlo Washington DC takes a different approach, threading the brand's characteristic social-hotel sensibility through a building whose tan brick facade and marquee-lit canopy land somewhere between neighborhood anchor and destination address. The property converted an existing structure into roughly 200 rooms across multiple floors, and the exterior's warm masonry palette — visible in the images against dark bronze window surrounds and a theatrical entrance canopy lined with exposed Edison bulbs — carries genuine warmth without the studied quirkiness that afflicts so many lifestyle-branded hotels. Inside, the design keeps faith with the building's bones. Guest rooms retain exposed red brick walls where the original structure permits, paired with fluted forest-green headboard panels, walnut-stained bed frames, and patterned low-pile carpet in a sand-and-sage geometry that grounds the palette without heaviness. The street-level restaurant deploys chevron terracotta tile flooring, channel-tufted cognac leather banquettes, and warm abstract canvases in amber and sienna — a room that feels gathered rather than designed. Upstairs, the rooftop bar folds open onto a stone-paved terrace via accordion glazing, arched backlit shelving framing the bar inside while rope-woven outdoor chairs face a wide skyline view that, at this height in this low-rise city, carries more weight than it might anywhere else.

"The rooms are modern and very clean, and the gym is also new and well-equipped. Although there was a problem with the water pipes (unfortunately, the restaurant had to stay closed), the hotel handled the situation wonderfully. Breakfast was served to go and tasted fantastic. The hotel communicated this quickly and clearly. Since unforeseen problems can arise, I think it’s very commendable how the hotel handled it. But most of all, I want to praise the staff—everyone is incredibly nice and helpful. I’d especially like to highlight Dogan from the front desk: he helped us with our questions in a very professional and friendly way! I highly recommend this hotel :)"

"The vibes were so chill and cool from the minute you step in front of the hotel. The music, the hip decor, and the people were just incredible. And don’t even get me started on the room aesthetic!! The room was so relaxing and hip at the same time. My favorite part was the window bench seat where I could read and people watch. The beds were comfy and the shower was perfectly hot and powerful. The front desk was amazing. We mentioned we were there for my daughter’s graduation from Howard, and they remembered that and asked how it went after our stay. The location is quiet, easy uber pick up/drop off. The cafe was okay. The pool was not open and we didn’t go to the rooftop so I can’t speak to that. We did order room service for breakfast and the 3-eggs, potatoes, bacon entree along with the berry salad was delicious and enough for 2-3 people to share. The grilled sourdough was 10/10, bacon perfectly cooked. Also, the elevators only allowed you to go to the floor you were staying on and the floors with common space (rooftop, gym, ice/microwave room) and I LOVED this feature. I felt that much safer. I do want to be honest, there was one thing that was not great. Two nights during our stay they were cleaning a room across from us at 9:30 at night. Doors banging, loud talking, etc. I had early mornings for graduation ceremonies both times and that is probably why it was so frustrating. Overall, exceptional staff, service, location, and most importantly VIBES. I highly recommend Arlo."

"The hotel was clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful. At checkout there were 6 of us individually paying which was a relatively fast process (~10 minutes). Kay tactfully dealt with an angry old man at the desk who waited 10 minutes. She was kind and professional."
