PB hotel design editorial

Georgetown's enduring resistance to architectural spectacle shaped the brief for the Four Seasons Hotel Washington D.C. from the outset. When the property opened in 1979 — designed by Eigil Kiær of the firm Vlastimil Koubek — the neighborhood's historic overlay effectively required that the building defer to its surroundings, yielding a seven-story red brick facade that slots into the M Street and Pennsylvania Avenue corridor with the disciplined modesty of a well-mannered neighbor. The interior courtyard, visible in the images, amplifies this residential instinct: raised brick planters, mature Japanese maples, and woven outdoor seating arranged around a circular garden bed create something closer to a private Georgetown townhouse garden than a hotel terrace. The 222 rooms were refreshed in a renovation that introduced a palette of warm taupe grasscloth wallcovering, dark-stained walnut bed frames with tall upholstered headboards in champagne linen, and accent chairs in burnt sienna velvet — a combination that carries the feeling of a carefully curated private residence rather than corporate luxury. The restaurant, Bourbon Steak, designed around a ceiling dense with linen-shaded drum pendants suspended at varying heights above richly paneled walnut walls, generates an amber warmth that few hotel dining rooms in the capital have matched. Below grade, the lap pool sits beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling flanked by large-format black-and-white photographic murals of Washington landmarks, grounding the spa firmly in its city without resorting to kitsch.

Four Seasons Hotel Washington D.C. Reviews

"I stayed here during a business trip. The hotel is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and M Street in Georgetown and in typical FS fashion is tasteful and understated. The rooms have been updated and they are well done. Small quirks. No phones in the bathroom is odd for a luxury hotel. Additionally, my suite opened first into the the bedroom rather than the living room. That was also odd. Bourbon + Steak is a good restaurant and has a good bar scene. Overall this is a good FS and a good place to stay in DC. If you have work to do in downtown or on Capitol Hill you might consider staying elsewhere."

"I attended a wedding reception at the Four Seasons this weekend. The setting was lovely and the food delicious. Mostly, I wanted to comment on the service. With the permission of the bride, we asked to take some of the delicious food to a friend who was ill and unable to attend. A member of the wait staff, Rachid, overheard our conversation and without asking, packaged up an assortment of food for us. He added his good wishes for our friend. Rachid really was just lovely. The Four Seasons is fortunate to have staff like him."

"We checked in here for a few days and had two rooms, one was very kindly upgraded to a suite. That said both rooms were good sizes and lovely. The suite had an excellent bathroom, which is something that seems to be in short supply in the US. All the usual things apply here the shower pressure was excellent and bed comfortable. I am sure there are newer more flashy hotels but what really sets this apart is the amazing staff. We had such lovely, cheerful and efficient staff at breakfast they were truly a joy. As was the food at breakfast and room service. The concierge team was so helpful, and knowledgeable nothing was too much trouble they really made our stay. Such an in-depth knowledge of the city, art and museums. I am currently at another hotel and missing the expert advice that was so warmly given by the concierge team. The hotel was in a great location with so many eateries and shops within walking distance."

"Beautiful, well located property but what really sets this hotel apart is its outstanding service. From the concierge to the front desk, housekeeping and room service they never missed a beat and believe me I am a tough customer and they exceeded my expectations. I seek a fragrance free experience and they delivered....the towels and bed linens were free of the chemical scents and they included bath products that were also fragrance free. I had very specific requests for in room dining ...from celery juice with no foam or pulp to GF and DF accommodations...they delivered. The concierge team was attentive, responsive and made such good suggestions. When available Four Seasons is our Hotel of choice and we have stayed in quite a few....this property is one of the best!!"

"What a lovely treat for a work trip. Service was incredible. As good as you can get in DC area. Lovely staff in all areas. Room was comfortable and quiet. No street noise. Food was great for room service and the restaurant. Good bourbon store next door."
