PB hotel design editorial

Across from Logan Circle's bronze equestrian statue of Civil War General John Logan, a mid-century modern tower wears its politics on its facade — literally. The large-scale mural of women's portraits spanning several floors announces Hotel Zena's central premise before a guest ever steps inside: this is a property built around a curatorial commitment to women's history and feminist iconography, executed through nearly 35,000 square feet of commissioned art. Opened in 2020 following a full renovation of the former Beacon Hotel, the 191-room property was redesigned by BHDM Design with interiors that balance contemporary DC professional energy against something more playful and irreverent. The lobby bar sets the register for the whole property — herringbone oak floors, low-slung swivel chairs with a sculptural cantilevered ceiling installation coiling overhead like a spine, and dominating one wall, an enormous pixelated portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg assembled from thousands of individual tokens. Guestrooms carry the graphic language forward more quietly: dark upholstered platform beds against wood-slat headboard panels, pale oak flooring, and monochromatic bed runners embroidered with the hotel's looping signature motif. Suite columns arrive wrapped in hand-drawn figurative line work in red and charcoal. The overall effect is closer to a curated art residency than a conventional hotel stay — purposeful without becoming didactic, the design holding its convictions lightly enough that the rooms themselves remain genuinely livable.

"We stayed for 3 nights in April in a ‘King-bed with a city view’ room. The room was spacious, clean and the bed very comfortable. The hotel was in a great location about 15-20 mins walk to the White House and 8-10 minutes walk to a metro stop. This made getting around Washington DC easy. We used the hotel as a base for seeing all the sites and either walked or used the bus or metro. It was easy to get around without a car. Unfortunately the rooftop bar and pool were not open as this is seasonal. Breakfast wasn’t included in our room rate so we only had breakfast at the hotel on one morning. It was delicious but expensive (compared to other DC restaurants we ate in). Also serving coffee in disposable cups seemed odd. The only thing that we were disappointed by was the additional daily $35 "amenities fee” which we were told covered the cost of wifi access and in-room tea, coffee and water which was replenished on request. In most hotels of this caliber, these things are included as standard and this seemed a bit like an extra tax or a way of making additional money on the room rate whilst keeping advertised prices lower. I'm not sure what would have happened if we said we don't want these 'amenities'!! Overall we had a great stay at Zena and would recommend the hotel."

"Great location, ambience, and artwork! its like walking into an art gallery! Ezekiel on the front desk was incredibly helpful, and managed to get me checked in despite my early arrival to prepare for my meetings. Thank you for being supportive and professional."

"We arrived at the hotel at 2pm and they charged us $35 to check in early. Our room was cleaned and they only gave us one bath towel and never replenished the coffee. The bar was very rarely opened."

"Hotel Zena is a wonderful hotel. The location is fantastic, and the staff is very helpful and friendly. The art is beautiful! And the room service breakfast is some of the best I’ve had. Amazing food and drinks. We truly enjoyed our stay and will be back. The beds are super comfortable, and our room was so quiet."
