PB hotel design editorial

Few American cities have historically turned their backs on water the way Washington did with the Anacostia and Potomac, which makes the emergence of The Wharf on the Southwest Waterfront feel genuinely transformative. Pendry Washington DC – The Wharf, which arrived in 2022 as part of that mixed-use district, is the architectural centerpiece of this reclamation — a 12-story, 131-key tower designed by ODA whose facade is immediately legible in the images: a rhythmic grid of angled concrete fins and warm timber soffits sheltering deep-set glazed balconies, the whole composition shifting color with the light off the Potomac below. The massing has the precision of a well-resolved residential building rather than a conventional hotel block, each room appearing to claim its own private relationship with the water. Toronto-based DesignAgency handled the interiors with a sensibility that reaches toward continental Europe — Parisian grandeur filtered through a contemporary American lens. The guestrooms pair wrought iron four-poster beds and herringbone oak floors with Morris-inflected botanical rugs and curved corner windows that frame the marina like living paintings. The rooftop Moonraker bar is the most theatrical gesture: bold black-and-white striped floors, cane-backed bar stools upholstered in sapphire velvet on gilded pedestals, and a cascade of brass disc pendants suspended above a dark stone bar counter. Beyond the glass, the Washington skyline goes amber at dusk, completing the scene.

"Let me start with this: the valet left my car in reverse after exiting the vehicle and going to the trunk. Also, when we first arrived, no one came to the car or properly acknowledged me, despite me pulling directly in front and making eye contact. The customer service at Moonraker from the bartenders was horrible. We sat down, made eye contact with the bartender, and he didn’t say hello or acknowledge us at all. Instead, he was hyper-focused on couples to our left and right who didn’t look like us. We had to ask another employee for a menu because the bartender ignored us—even though we were actual hotel guests. At one point, a man who approached the bar after us was immediately acknowledged by the bartender. Eventually, another bartender came over but didn’t greet us—he just asked, “What can I get you?” We placed our order; the food and drinks were good. We made a point to be kind and respectful the entire time without causing a scene, just to see if that energy would be returned. It wasn’t. Every time we said “thank you,” we never once received a “you’re welcome.” We asked for water, and a couple who arrived after us—again, who didn’t look like us—were served water before we were and were properly greeted. I will say that the main bartender did provide good service to single women who were of the same racial demographic as us. The view is nice, but if you want a good seated view, make a reservation. We also ordered room service, which was good. However, they provide a button to request tray pickup, and no one ever came. I even called and requested pickup—still no one showed. I asked whether we needed to be in the room for pickup, and the representative said no. Additionally, there was a noticeable crack in the ceiling above the bed in Room 302. Overall, I was very disappointed with the level of customer service I’ve come to expect from Pendry. Management really needs to step in, provide proper customer service training, and ensure staff leave any biases at home. I don’t usually write reviews unless I’m extremely satisfied or extremely dissatisfied, but this experience needs to be addressed. If you look at other negative TripAdvisor reviews, you’ll see similar concerns. It’s unclear why management has not taken action."

"This is a great hotel. The design aesthetic is excellent. This is the opposite of staid and boring design. It is stylish, fresh and light. I am on business but would 100% bring my wife here for a weekend away from the kids. The rooftop bar and resto has a stunning view. Service is excellent. The room is very comfortable, and I had a great night’s sleep."

"I stayed at the Pendry Washington DC - The Wharf for one Saturday night in April 2026. The location is a lot of fun. If you have not been to the Wharf, it is worth a visit...but don't get so wrapped up in the food options at the wharf that you miss the monuments and historical sights in DC! The hotel room is a definite 5. Spacious, hard surface floors, great bathroom, amazing shower, and super comfortable bed. However I only rated 4 stars overall because of the food in the restaurants. We had breakfast at Moonraker on the roof, and we also had a lunch at the lobby bar. In both cases, the emphasis was on clever presentation, but not on flavor. Both meals were kind of bland, but they looked great."

"My stay at this hotel was absolutely amazing from start to finish. The staff truly made the experience special, everyone was incredibly welcoming and attentive, from the front desk team to the cleaning crew and bartenders. Their friendliness and professionalism stood out every day. The room itself was fantastic. It was clean, spacious, and the bed was extremely comfortable. One of the highlights was the stunning view of Washington, DC, which made the stay even more memorable. The location couldn’t have been better, perfect for walking and exploring wherever you want to go. I also really appreciated how thoughtful the cleaning staff was, always checking in to make sure everything was perfect and that I had everything I needed. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and would absolutely stay here again. Highly recommended!"

"Down on the DC Wharf the hotel provided a great view across the river. The staff were friendly and welcoming and we did have a few issues but they were swiftly sorted out. The rooms were quite small, we had a partial river view and our daughter had just the 'basic' room. The bed was very comfortable although I have yet to find an hotel in the USA with a decent pillow so I always take my own. The rooms were spotless and relatively quiet although the planes from Ronald Reagan airport could be heard overhead and the zircon was loud The coffee machine was fine for hot water and tea (buy your milk outside if you dont like the horrible creamer you get everywhere) but I dont like American coffee, even when they call it Espresso... Now the shower was EPIC - hot and full bodied! A separate lavatory and a single sink made up the rest of the bathroom. Beware the minibar! If you dare lift anything to have a look, it tells your bill but fails to tell it you have put it back! Luckily I checked it via the television the night before we left! Talking of bills... the taxes! OMG destination fees and occupancy fees (x 2 for each room each night) BEWARE! Breakfast was mediocre. No freshly squeezed OJ and everything was very expensive - with the dreaded taxes added after. Sadly there isnt much choice in the area so you are a bit stuck in the mornings whereas lunchtime onwards there are lots of places to eat. The staff are all great and really helpful so that makes up for a lot!"
