PB hotel design editorial

Riggs National Bank built its flagship headquarters at 900 F Street NW in 1891, commissioning James G. Hill to design a Richardsonian Romanesque block of rusticated granite whose arched windows and corbelled cornice made it one of the most architecturally imposing addresses in Penn Quarter. The bank that once held Abraham Lincoln's personal account and financed the purchase of Alaska operated here for over a century before closing its doors — leaving behind one of Washington's great commercial interiors, which Lore Group converted into Riggs Washington DC in 2020, with interiors by Roman and Williams. Roman and Williams, the New York studio behind the Ace Hotel New York, brought their characteristic layering of historical register and contemporary ease to 181 rooms dressed in terracotta-washed walls, swirling botanical headboards upholstered in floral velvet, studded steamer-trunk minibars, and geometric Greek-key rugs in burnt orange. The lobby preserves its original coffered plasterwork ceiling and fluted columns, now grounded by a deep-blue geometric carpet and a brass-framed reception desk centered beneath a station clock. The ground-floor bar — called P.C.H. — makes the most compelling argument for the renovation: green-veined marble columns, antiqued mirror arches behind a brass back bar, and oxblood leather barstools arranged along a white marble counter, the whole room carrying the atmosphere of a Gilded Age financial institution that has decided, finally, to have a very good time.

"We celebrated our wedding here and can't recommend the hotel or venue more highly! The staff are truly fantastic, the pinnacle of hospitality. Rooms are beautiful and comfortable. I recommend eating at the Cafe and having a drink at the Silver Lyan. The vibe is classic but not old-fashioned. The location is in the middle of Chinatown in downtown, DC. It is immediately across the street from the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum and within sight distance of the Capital One Arena. Rooms are beautiful, sparkling clean, and quiet (despite being in the middle of town!). Finally, the quiche is one of the best I've ever eaten."

"I really wanted to love this hotel as the property is beautiful, but unfortunately service falls off. From the beginning to the end we had terrible experiences with the staff: when we checked in the front desk employee was rude and unhelpful- more concerned about moving on to the next guest than assist us. Then during breakfast at the restaurant, the manager told us that waiting time for a table was “two hours” - which was clearly made up as there were several open tables that never filled up (I guess he wanted to “save” those for customers without breakfast included like us….) Then waiting time for food or any service was super long given that they were short staffed or hired inexperienced employees. I really hope they improve their service quality and professionalism pmas these made my stay quite unpleasant and unwilling to go back."

"We had a great time at the Riggs hotel. Staff was very friendly. Mr. D.C. (the bell captain) knows all there is to know about D.C. and where to eat. He is extremely helpful and friendly. Honestly, the staff here made the entire trip much more enjoyable."

"I booked my room through the Amex "The Hotel Collection" and it was definitely one of the nicest hotels and stays we had in DC for the last 10 years. We were upgraded from an Atelier Suite to one of the First Lady Suites and it was gorgeous! The room looked just as great as it did in the pictures. Probably even better because of all the sunlight coming into the room. My wife was so impressed. We had communicated with Latoya, from Concierge beforehand and she was able to get items delivered to the room upon our arrival and before we made it in the room. Coach took our bags to the room and was very personable and friendly. EVERYONE that we interacted with from the bartenders at Cafe Riggs to our bartender and wait staff at Silver Lyan were all 5 stars. I was also able to use my cell phone to text with the front desk to get breakfast in bed delivered to my wife as a surprise. We will definitely be coming back to the Riggs. This is a 5 Star Large Hotel, but has the feel of a boutique hotel. We stayed for two days and by the afternoon, the doormen knew my name and welcomed me back by name whenever we came back to the Hotel. We were also given plenty of complimentary champagne whether in the Cafe and when welcomed back to the hotel. If you are thinking about staying here, you won't regret it."

"My experience at the Riggs Hotel was exceptional. The bell captain, Garnett, made me feel welcome with his warm demeanor and attention to detail. I was surprised by and immensely grateful for the welcome champagne and kind note that was sent to my room! The rooms are beautifully decorated with an appreciation for the history of Riggs Bank (a fascinating, storied, and uniquely DC building). I highly recommend. I will be returning to enjoy more of what the hotel has to offer!"
