PB hotel design editorial

At 2121 P Street NW, where Dupont Circle's Victorian rowhouse fabric gives way to the broader commercial grain of a mid-century office corridor, a buff-brick tower of distinctly utilitarian origins has been transformed into the Royal Sonesta Washington DC. The ten-storey structure — its grid of aluminum-framed windows and projecting canopy entrance visible in the images — carries the massing language of late-1960s commercial construction, the kind of building whose bones were never meant to charm but whose floor plates and ceiling heights translate well into generous hotel rooms. A renovation reworked the interiors with a palette that pushes against the building's understated exterior: cobalt blue accent walls anchoring the headboards, geometric patterned carpets in grey and electric blue threaded with abstract scribble motifs, lacquered blue dressers, and wire-frame geometric lamps in aged brass that pull loosely from mid-century American modernism without committing to period reproduction. The 99 guestrooms carry an energy that the public spaces extend in warmer registers — the bar running long tufted banquettes in mustard leather and teal alongside oak low tables, the walls hung with large-scale textural canvases suggesting abstracted cityscapes, while the restaurant deploys a crimson lacquer partition inset with Moroccan-style ironwork grilles against dark timber dining chairs and amber-lit display cabinetry. The effect across all these spaces is closer to a well-curated urban independent than the chain property the address might suggest.

"Everyone friendly, pleasant and professional. Especially Mgr L. Vargas who went above and beyond to resolve issues and make guests comfortable. Great location. Beautiful rooms."

"My recent stay at The Royal Sonesta Washington, DC Capitol Hill started off extremely disappointing and unfortunately set the tone for our entire visit. What was supposed to be a fun girls’ weekend was negatively impacted during check-in by a front desk employee named Chris. His attitude was unprofessional and lacked basic customer service etiquette. He repeatedly stated that he could not see the payment for the room, even after I explained that I was prepared to pay and that there was no issue with the funds. Communication was also very difficult—he was wearing a mask and speaking unclearly, often under his breath, which made it hard to understand what he was saying. The situation escalated when he pressured my daughter to show proof of payment, causing her significant anxiety to the point where she became overwhelmed and started crying. What was most upsetting was his response—he told her, “I don’t care about your emotions, I want money,” which was completely inappropriate and unacceptable in any customer service setting. A hotel experience begins at the front desk, and unfortunately, this interaction ruined the start of our stay. I do plan to follow up with management, specifically Liz Vargas, as indicated on the card I was given, to address how poorly we were treated. While we did enjoy our time in Washington, DC overall, this experience has left a lasting negative impression. Based on this encounter, I would not return or recommend this hotel to others."

"This was my first trip to the USA. The Royal Sonesta Hotel hosted me as if I had been at home. The atmosphere is amazing. The attitude of a staff is very good and kind. People care about you. What’s important to mention is the location of the Hotel. It’s located almost in the heart of Washington D.C. It gives a possibility to reach out any sights, bus stops, etc. I can’t but mention the food in the restaurant Bistro (French cuisine). The staff is magnificent! Special shout out for Madam Liliet and Mr. Joe from Bistro!"

"We had a decent experience. Leilet at the front desk was very helpful the whole time! Room service was amazing and timely. My main complaint is the cost of the parking here. I saved money by using the meter when the hotel has a garage. Whether you do valet or self pay, it’s way too expensive. I believe that paying guests deserve better than that."

"While I felt catfished by the DC Cherry blossoms, I definitely didn’t feel catfished by Royal Sonesta, DC. Outstanding customer service from the time we checked in until we left. Very attentive. We loved the decor, the rooms were wonderful. I loved that there were no carpets and high ceilings. Bathrooms were nice and I loved the attention to detail regarding things like the makeup washcloth. The restaurant attached was delicious! I would come back for that too. There was a gentleman in the restaurant, maybe a manager, he had high energy and was constantly making sure everyone was ok. Give him a raise. He was awesome! Alecc (sp) at the front desk was awesome! Go Birds! Lol Sonesta, great job!"
