PB hotel design editorial

At 1200 16th Street NW, four blocks from the White House, a nine-story Beaux-Arts limestone tower designed by Jules Henri de Sibour opened in 1923 as a residential apartment building for Washington's political elite. That pedigree — proximity to power, an address that has sheltered senators and diplomats for a century — gives The Jefferson its particular gravity, and the 2009 restoration by SR/A Interior Design honored it without retreating into pastiche. The facade presents as a compressed neoclassical monument: restrained rustication at the base, paired pilasters climbing the upper floors, a deep cornice capping the whole in a manner de Sibour borrowed freely from Second Empire Paris. Inside, the 99 rooms and suites calibrate between two registers. Some carry a Federal period warmth — Louis XVI-style sleigh beds in painted oak, toile drapery in sage green, bouillotte lamps on inlaid marble-topped nightstands — while others take a darker, more masculine line: ebonized four-poster beds dressed in burnt orange, charcoal leather settees, silver-gilt chandelier arms above geometric carpet. The front desk sits beneath a monumental pastoral oil painting, black-and-white marble underfoot, gold-toned Empire chairs flanking mahogany writing tables. The restaurant dining room is the building's most theatrical interior: a barrel-vaulted skylight of leaded glass arches above Wedgwood-blue plasterwork friezes, candle sconces, and harlequin marble floors — a room that makes Washington's appetite for neoclassical ceremony feel entirely earned.

"What can I say? 10/10 experience. I was in a suite. The room was quiet and well appointed. The bathroom was roomy, with a spectacular shower. The mattress was the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on. The staff was friendly and warmly greeted us every time we encountered them. Check in was efficient and allowed us to check in early. We had breakfast twice at the restaurant. It is good, but not outstanding. It’s reliable, and the servers are professional. Our meals were prepared quickly. The hotel’s location is in an area convenient to the capital, monuments, and the Cap arena. The Jefferson is our go-to every year when we visit DC for a hockey game."

"The Jefferson continues to impress with its consistent excellent service, well-maintained and pleasant rooms and strong F&B options. It is an excellent base for central DC needs, avoiding the need to trek in from Georgetown and the cluster of good hotels there and permitting walking with the right weather to most meetings (or sights)."

"I stayed at this hotel while traveling for business and had a very positive experience. The property is well maintained, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere made it easy to relax after a busy workday. I especially want to recognize Sasha for providing excellent service during my stay. Sasha was professional, attentive, and very helpful, making sure everything went smoothly from arrival through the duration of my visit. It’s clear that Sasha takes pride in delivering a high level of hospitality. Overall, a reliable and comfortable place to stay for business travel. I would gladly stay here again."

"Just back from three nights at The Jefferson over MLKJr weekend. Check-in was very personal, my suite was comfortable and spacious, dining at The Greenhouse was enjoyable, and drinks at Quill were fun. Above all, the service is the reason I have stayed at this Washington classic more often than not when in town. I can't say enough good things about the friendly and professional staff. Everyone is eager to help with any issue or need. The hotel is elegant, intimate, pleasant, and spotless - in short, the perfect stay."
