PB hotel design editorial

For a century, the block at 222 M Street NE hummed with electrical current — Central Armature Works, one of Washington's industrial anchors, rewound motors and fabricated components here until the city's NoMa neighborhood began its long transformation. That charged history now runs quietly beneath The Morrow Washington DC, a 12-story, LEED-certified hotel that arrived in 2022 with 203 rooms and a design brief split between two studios of notably different temperaments. Shalom Baranes Associates gave the building its composed exterior — pale stone cladding, generous glazing, and blonde wood panels flanking the entrance that carry something of the neighborhood's industrial memory without literalizing it. Inside, INC Architecture & Design handled the public areas, and the restaurant is where their hand is most legible: circular banquettes in olive velvet, layered ring ceilings with recessed illumination, and brass pendant lights combine into a room that feels more like a supper club than a hotel dining room. Rottet Studio took the guest rooms in a cooler, more contemplative direction — bleached oak floors, fluted case goods in dark-stained wood, headboards in layered blue and putty tones, and moon-phase artwork that stitches a quiet celestial thread through each space. The bar doubles down on deep indigo, herringbone oak, and a dark marble counter that anchors the room against its curtained windows. The split authorship could have fragmented the experience, but the two studios share enough formal vocabulary — curved forms, fluted surfaces, a preference for layered blues — to hold it together.

The Morrow Washington DC, Curio Collection by Hilton Reviews

"First and foremost, this is a hotel situated right next to a train station. One entire side of the building sits no more than six feet away from numerous railway tracks (photo attached). Trains pass by continuously, 24 hours a day, creating a severe noise disturbance. By its very nature, such a hotel cannot legitimately claim a 4- or 5-star rating. Our most negative experience occurred right at the check-in stage. We had booked our stay four months in advance. Furthermore, at the time of booking, the hotel was fully aware that we are Hilton Gold members. Additionally, the reservation was made through American Express Travel, which offers exclusive benefits to Platinum cardholders when booking through "The Hotel Collection." Despite all these factors, we were assigned one of the worst rooms in the entire hotel. I approached the front desk to request a room change—asking for any other, quieter room—as we suffer from sleep issues. In response, I was told that there were absolutely no vacant rooms left in the hotel. The only option offered to us was a full refund, leaving us to try and find another hotel in Washington at 9:00 PM—luggage in hand—after a long and exhausting journey. In light of this, I would like to hear the opinion of the Hilton hotel chain's ownership regarding a staff member who is so quick to let go of $1,200 in revenue rather than attempting to find a constructive solution to a guest's issue. The hotel staff members are polite, but they are neither competent nor professional. The hotel employee Betelhem stated that all rooms in the hotel are pre-assigned to guests in advance. However, if I reserved my room four months prior to arrival—and am, moreover, a loyal Hilton Gold-tier member—why was I assigned the worst room available instead of a good one? There is absolutely no logic to the argument put forward by the hotel staff. What disappointed us most was that the staff made absolutely no effort to resolve the issue—or even to simply mitigate the guests' negative experience. We encountered nothing but complete indifference: "If you don't like it, take your money and go find somewhere else!" And to top it all off, there were holes in the bed linens (photo attached). We strongly advise against staying at this hotel. While the Hilton chain is generally quite good, properties like this one—part of the Curio Collection—undermine the reputation of the respected Hilton brand. P.S. And please don't reply saying that you will improve the service. That won't help me."

"Today I visited The Morrow Washington DC with my family and had a truly great experience. I would like to give special thanks to Ferdows at the front desk for his outstanding service. He was very helpful, patient, and took the time to answer all of our questions. He also gave us several excellent recommendations, all of which turned out to be great. His professionalism and friendly attitude made us feel very welcome and comfortable. Team members like him are a big reason why this hotel stands out. I hope the team recognizes his great work. We had a wonderful time and will definitely come back again."

"I was here for a business conference with the national medical Association and I have to say the staff makes all the difference. Mr. Frank, the bellman greeted me with a smile every time I passed the lobby on my way from one event to another. He was instrumental in helping me find my way around the hotel as well as the up-and-coming neighborhood. Thank you so much!"

"The hotel is an ok mid-range hotel, small rooms, trendy location, but it has a critical flaw: it is built next to the train tracks leading to Union Station and the noise is terrible all night long. If you care about sleeping, this is not a hotel for you."
