A former incinerator plant on the banks of the Potomac — its original smokestack still rising intact above the roofline — gives the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown its most arresting quality: the stubborn industrial fact of the building itself. Constructed in 1933 and converted into a 86-room hotel in 2003, the structure's heavy Flemish-bond brickwork, arched factory windows, and the chimney's castellated crown were preserved rather than softened, giving the Georgetown property an identity no amount of conventional hotel architecture could manufacture. The lobby bar makes the contrast explicit: raw exposed brick walls enclose a room dressed in saffron silk drapes, lacquered ebony tables, jewel-toned velvet armchairs, and a working fireplace — the effect closer to a wealthy collector's library than to anything resembling a conventional hotel lounge. The guestrooms, by contrast, move away from the building's industrial past entirely. Upholstered headboards framed in dark espresso wood, teal silk accent cushions, ribbed task chairs, and textured wall coverings in warm grey give the rooms a composed, quietly contemporary register that lets the bones of the building carry the drama. The restaurant holds the tension between past and present most successfully — crimson leather dining chairs against exposed brick, floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows admitting diffused Potomac light, large-scale abstract canvases anchoring the walls — making the conversion feel genuinely resolved rather than merely decorative.

"Every so often you meet people who are simply excited to find ways to please you. It gives you a sense that, despite the world we live in today, there are some really good people. We went to the Ritz, expecting a fairly corporate experience and, instead, had some of the kindest front desk staff we have ever met. They went out of their way to be helpful and celebratory. And, as a result, we had a wonderful weekend in DC. The drinks, food and room were fabulous - but, most importantly, the people were truly kind. Thank you!"

"DO NOT STAY HERE!! This is not a Ritz!! Smoke and mirrors. It’s worse than any stay I’ve ever had! This is a fake Ritz, it was so run down, even a courtyard was better than this!! For what we paid the service was awful! Don’t get me started on how terrible the check in woman named Sandra was! She was so rude, The doorman never offered to take our bags. There wasn’t even anyone at the entrance the entire stay except when we came in. I don’t know what the deal is here but it’s a skeleton of a staff. The Bistro staff was great however! The room was rundown, carpet rundown, bathroom old. Better off somewhere else. Just do not stay here please!!!!!!"

"I enjoyed the stay here for the location (Georgetown is unique and insulated from DC politics, and a lovely place to stay and to walk around any time of year), and for the unique, historic, and small luxury hotel vibe. On arrival I enjoyed superb service and a tasty sandwich, even though it was very late in the evening, at the hotel bar. I also was happy with my quiet room that had plenty of natural light, and a good working space as well. Hope to have the privilege to stay here again one day!"

"Absolutely amazing 1 night stay at this hotel June 26-27, 2026. This Ritz-Carlton absolutely sets the bar for service!! Everyone we interacted with from the valet, front desk, housekeeping to the bartenders and servers, were all at the top of their game. Honestly, Marriott should have new employees spend time at this property to observe the ladies and gentlemen who work at this hotel to learn how to provide guests with a memorable experience. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so enjoyable!"
