PB hotel design editorial

A former incinerator plant on the banks of the Potomac — its original smokestack still rising intact above the roofline — gives the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown its most arresting quality: the stubborn industrial fact of the building itself. Constructed in 1933 and converted into a 86-room hotel in 2003, the structure's heavy Flemish-bond brickwork, arched factory windows, and the chimney's castellated crown were preserved rather than softened, giving the Georgetown property an identity no amount of conventional hotel architecture could manufacture. The lobby bar makes the contrast explicit: raw exposed brick walls enclose a room dressed in saffron silk drapes, lacquered ebony tables, jewel-toned velvet armchairs, and a working fireplace — the effect closer to a wealthy collector's library than to anything resembling a conventional hotel lounge. The guestrooms, by contrast, move away from the building's industrial past entirely. Upholstered headboards framed in dark espresso wood, teal silk accent cushions, ribbed task chairs, and textured wall coverings in warm grey give the rooms a composed, quietly contemporary register that lets the bones of the building carry the drama. The restaurant holds the tension between past and present most successfully — crimson leather dining chairs against exposed brick, floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows admitting diffused Potomac light, large-scale abstract canvases anchoring the walls — making the conversion feel genuinely resolved rather than merely decorative.

"We had a wonderful experience. This was a "staycation"--we've enjoyed Ritz hotels around the world, but wanted to try this one close to home because of the convenience, interesting architecture, and neighborhood. We also wanted to share the Ritz experience with our young son (this was his first time at a Ritz). It did not disappoint. We enjoyed the kids oriented amenities (e.g., check in activity bag and stuffed animal). The facilities are beautiful and well-maintained, the suite was very spacious with top notch design and care (and a really nice coffee machine). Everyone was very polite and almost everyone went above and beyond (as Ritz Ladies and Gentleman are known for). We look forward to returning and may make this a Thanksgiving family tradition. Almost every staff member went above and beyond (which is something we have experienced and expected from Ritz hotels). Any request was quickly handled with options. For example, I thought one of the lamps didn't work in our room and let the front desk know. Within minutes an engineer was there (it was my mistake for not turning on the entrance light in the suite which also controlled that lamp). We also collect Ritz lions and was hoping to get one for our son. The lady who checked us in said that we couldn't do the wagon and pick a stuffed animal until we were checking out. But, I remembered a message (and the website) says that it the stuffed animal would be available "upon arrival" (which makes more sense--why let the child wait until they leave to get a new friend?). I asked through the chat this time and Wes went above and beyond--he came to our room within a few minutes and brought a Ritz Kids lion (which is discontinued but he had some for just this type of occasion). He had one for my son and one for us (I mentioned that we have a collection). We loved the stuffed animals and will cherish them because of the memory and that they are unique now (discontinued). Housekeeping stopped for turndown service and then left numerous chocolates (not just one or two). And, the gentleman who brought our room service breakfast was great--not only excellent in set up and demeanor, but was friendly and engaging with our son. I highly recommend the Ritz Georgetown."

"Had a very pleasant stay here. The hotel is intimate and relaxing and in a great location in the heart of Georgetown. What really stood out were the staff. They were all exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We traveled with 3 small kids and everyone went out of their way to help and keep the little ones happy. Everything was seamless."
