PB hotel design editorial

Pentagon City's retail and residential grid, built over a former industrial site in Arlington just across the Potomac from Washington's federal core, gave the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City an unusual civic brief when it opened in 1990: to serve as an anchor of civic plausibility for a neighborhood still finding its identity. The 18-story limestone-clad tower, connected directly to the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City mall and the Metro below it, was designed to project the kind of institutional solidity that its surroundings had not yet earned — arched porte-cochère entry, symmetrical fenestration, a hipped roof silhouette that nods toward the neoclassical grammar of official Washington without quite committing to it. The 366 guestrooms carry that composed restraint inward: black lattice-work headboards with an X-and-diamond motif, ebonized writing desks paired with tufted grey side chairs, patterned carpets in charcoal and cream, and tall windows framing views toward Reagan National and the tree canopy of Arlington. The food and beverage spaces, refreshed in a more recent renovation, move toward a warmer mid-century register — walnut-framed dining chairs in sand upholstery, bronze branching screens that divide the restaurant floor without enclosing it, and a bar counter faced in white stone with a backlit walnut shelving wall behind. Teal velvet barstools add a note of controlled color against the otherwise tonal palette. The overall atmosphere is closer to a well-appointed federal club than a destination hotel, which, given the clientele of government contractors and defense-adjacent visitors this address reliably draws, turns out to be exactly the right call.

"This hotel remains at the top of my list top and for good reason. The staff consistently provides friendly and helpful service. Check-in is always a breeze, making for a smooth and accommodating arrival. I want to specifically commend the doorman and valet for their extra effort in helping me find a loaner umbrella for the day; their persistence in checking two different locations was another example of great service at this hotel. The room was lovely, and I appreciated the "upgraded" toilet, a nice new addition for this location. The location is ideal, with convenient access to the adjacent mall and Metro. For late arrivals from the West Coast, the mall's variety of quick eats is a perfect, convenient option. I was also happy to discover a quick, direct walkway through the parking lot to a local grocery store, plus more restaurant choices just behind the mall. I enjoyed a clean room and a great night's sleep. This hotel earns top marks yet again."

"Incredible business experience. The OK: restaurant / bar was packed - made it fun, but only a few servers. Management and bell staff were even stepping in to help. Being the only option on property, to be expected. The good: location, vibe and size of rooms The better: gym was clean and steam sauna were immaculate The best: staff was simply remarkable. Asked my name everywhere and took an interest into our stay. 1. My team had a huge presentation that week and Giuliana asked us EVERY DAY how we were doing and the day of…. Was waiting for us to get back, and a hand written note of encouragement / congratulations and a surprise. She even prayed with us the night before. 2. Bell team and leader made sure we never touched a door or our luggage - true class. 3. Sales manager saw me in the lobby eating a quick sandwich before my uber arrived and offered coffee and when I mentioned the complimentary coffee was only regular (I drink Decafe) - within seconds he made a cup of Decafe appear. Of all the Ritzs in my travels - what this lacked in size, it made up for in personalized service. I wasn’t some high roller in a big suite - I simply travel for business and stay in their least expensive room. They made an ordinary trip extraordinary. Giuliana - the Ritz Pentagon City is lucky to have you."

"This was a wonderful stay! I love that there is an entrance to the mall in the hotel! The staff was welcoming and helpful when we needed referrals for activities outside of the hotel but nearby. Whereas, you must do valet (which I don't always prefer---because we have children and bathroom breaks aren't as seamlessly timed as we would like--the valet made us feel welcomed and appreciated! I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't allow Platinum or Titanium Bonvoy members usage of the lounge even though you are on the lounge level; when you are upgraded. Once I asked about that the staff was a bit firm on their approach. Other than that misunderstanding--all went smoothly! We travel a lot and may consider staying there again! ***We had a monument view king room on the lounge level."

"Conveniently located to locations in Arlington and close to DCA. Metro stop right outside the entrance of the hotel so you can get into DC easily. Pentagon City Mall is right next to the hotel. Tons of food options in the Mall and right outside the Ritz. Hotel itself shows its age a little but still is a top hotel with excellent staff and service. Rooms are big but everything is dated in the room (not that it matters but an update wouldn’t hurt). 24 hour sauna on the third floor is awesome."
