PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of 16th and K Streets, half a block from the north fence of the White House — the Washington Monument visible in the dusk from the front canopy — few addresses in the American capital carry the accumulated political weight of this one. The St. Regis Washington D.C. is housed in a Beaux-Arts building completed in 1926, designed by Donn Barber in the Italian Renaissance palazzo manner, its Indiana limestone facade articulated with rusticated base, arched windows, and ornate cartouches that announce civic seriousness rather than mere hospitality. The hotel's 182 rooms across eight floors were renovated most recently in the 2010s, the work restoring the property's ceremonial register while introducing contemporary comfort. The public rooms remain the most compelling argument for the building. The bar carries a lacquered intensity — crimson drapery pooling to herringbone parquet floors, burl wood paneling framing a linear gas fireplace, a curved emperador marble bartop anchoring the room's geometry — that feels closer to a private club than a hotel lounge. The restaurant preserves Barber's original painted coffered ceiling, its gilded beams presiding over red leather cantilever chairs with polished chrome bases, a friction between the 1920s envelope and mid-century furniture that gives the room genuine energy. Guest rooms divide between two registers: warmer, traditionally furnished rooms with tufted leather headboards and bronze chandelier fittings, and more recently updated rooms pairing backlit upholstered panels with sapphire blue lounge chairs and gold urn lamps.

"It If I could give it a zero I would. Absolutely disgusting room. I’ve included photos of the area behind the toilet that I don’t think has been cleaned in years, coupled with the huge chunk out of the vanity that has now become blackened. Topped off with the light from the closet that wouldn’t turn off no matter how firmly it was closed so it was really fun to look at all night! Also, upon first entering our room, there were coins all over the floor so it obviously hadn’t been vacuumed. Finally, we were extremely tired one night and didn’t feel like going out for dinner after a long day of sightseeing so my child got a kids cheese burger with fries, ordered well done. Was brought almost raw with French fries so salty, they were inedible. How does one mess that up? I emailed to let them know what was happening and their solution was to give us a late checkout. Um our flight leaves early in the morning and why would I want to stay longer at such a gross hotel. They also put the cost of our room on not one but TWO cards (I had submitted a different one to use upon checkin). I have never in my life had so many issues at one hotel. Still hasn’t been fixed. There are so many great places to stay in DC, look elsewhere"

"Hard pass. Rooms are small and outdated. Bathroom is incredibly tight. You can reach the shower and sink at the same time. Only one person can fit. Beds are hard and firm. Feather pillows easily fell flat and did not hold its shape. Robes are itchy and need to be replaced. Poor service. For example, I reached out to concierge to plan something special for my daughter’s birthday before hand, I requested a pastry with happy birthday written on the plate. We checked it and it was NOT in the room. Pure disappointment as I wanted to surprise my daughter. No handwritten card. I was beyond frustrated as that was the purpose of this trip- to celebrate her. Also, what a waste of time reaching out prior to the trip to plan the ammenity. Furthermore, when I complained and ask they bring it after dinner, they did but the pastries were so stale!!! My daughter had one bite and threw the rest away. Terrible terrible. This is definitely not the same St Regis service you would expect from this brand, except for the standard complimentary tea/coffee service and pressing. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the last st Regis we have stayed in. I did not have a specific room butler- it seemed as if whoever is available will tend to your request. This hotel is far from comparable to the previous stays in locations such as New York or Hong Kong. No upgrade for Platinum members. You do get free continental breakfast, which was nice. In summary- expect a 4 star room at best and poor service. Set your expectations low- if you come in expecting Marriott v st Regis, you will be fine. Recommendation- go to the Waldorf instead!! High ceilings, large room, and better experience! That is a 5 star stay."

"Had a great trip to DC this weekend! First time staying at the St. Regis and we were well taken care of. Our room wasn’t quite ready on arrival so we were treated to a drink at the bar. Our toddler was spoiled with popcorn and a stuffy so she couldn’t care less! Our room was clean and spacious. We were treated with cake on arrival in celebration of my birthday. The following day we interrupted our housekeeper, Yolanda who could not be more friendly! She brought our daughter a toddler sized robe that she loved. Later that evening after dinner we returned to find a step-stool and toddler sized slipper that were just darling! It’s the little touches like this that make you feel at home. Also Deric spoiled us with some wine a chocolates to enjoy! We were overall impressed with our stay and plan to return again! Thank you for the hospitality!"

"We stayed here for a family Event and hoped to see some sights during our downtime. The location truly couldn’t be more convenient—you don’t need a car. You can walk a few steps to the White House, museums, and just about everything else. I was also very impressed with the service even before we arrived. When I booked the room, Marriott’s website was giving me trouble with applying a certificate. Elizabeth Brogan at the hotel personally stepped in and sent a letter to Bonvoy CR to get the issue resolved. That is above and beyond service; many hotels would simply claim their hands are tied. I would also like to recognize Derik at check-in and the manager, Katrina. There was some confusion with a room change that caused us difficulty, and Derik and his colleague, Ahmed, advocated on our behalf. Katrina then stepped in and was extremely accommodating and helpful. She essentially said, “What can I do to make everything right?”—and then she did exactly that. Maybe this should be expected from a manager at a luxury hotel looking after an elite-status guest, but still appreciated. I didn’t have time to use many of the hotel’s amenities, but the lobby is very nice, and the elite breakfast benefit was excellent. It’s not a buffet—you order from the menu—and it was comparable to the Hay-Adams just a few doors down."
