PB hotel design editorial

Navy Yard's transformation from decommissioned industrial waterfront to Washington's most closely watched new neighborhood found one of its clearest expressions in the Thompson Washington D.C., which opened in 2020 as part of the broader mixed-use development at 221 M Street SE. The building's dark brick facade, articulated with large black-framed warehouse windows set in a grid across its nine-story face, draws a credible line back to the district's maritime and industrial past without pretending to be something it isn't — this is new construction wearing its references lightly rather than in costume. Interiors designed by INC Architecture & Design work a vein of mid-century American club sensibility through the property's 225 rooms, layering dark-stained oak floors, arched leather headboards with charcoal-painted surrounds, and copper-toned wall sconces against a palette of slate grey and warm cream. The furniture program in the larger suites mixes cognac leather sofas with marble-topped cocktail tables on deep indigo rugs — the overall atmosphere closer to a well-appointed private club than a conventional hotel room. The street-level restaurant carries this through with wainscoted walls, channeled leather banquettes, gingham-clothed tables, and framed prints arranged in salon clusters, the whole room landing somewhere between a Parisian brasserie and an old Georgetown dining room. Above it all, the rooftop bar shifts register entirely — terracotta tile, bleached oak shelving, and sage-green stools opening onto views across the Anacostia waterfront.

Thompson Washington D.C. Reviews

"We recently completed a two-night stay at the Thompson Washington D.C. and were very impressed with the hospitality. From the moment we pulled up, the service was standout. The door team (specifically Million) and the valet staff were professional, helpful, and set a great tone for the trip. Room and Comfort We were upgraded to a balcony room, which was a highlight given the warm spring weekend. The room itself felt modern and was kept very clean. One thing worth noting is how quiet the room was. Even with the activity in the Navy Yard district, we didn't hear any outside noise, which made for a very restful stay. Globalist Benefits As a Guest of Honor stay, we were well taken care of. The staff offered us a 4 PM late checkout right at the start. We didn't need the full extension, but the flexibility was appreciated. Brunch at Surveyor We ate at the on-site restaurant, Surveyor, both mornings. I highly recommend the blackened shrimp and grits—it was excellent. The steak and eggs were also a solid choice. While the crab cake Benedict was just okay for us due to the sauce, the service from the waitstaff was consistently top-tier. Area Highlights If you are in town for a baseball game or just to enjoy the waterfront, the location is hard to beat. It’s a beautiful, walkable area with plenty of green space nearby. We also checked out the gym, which appeared to be one of the better hotel fitness facilities we've seen lately."

"The Thompson Hotel exceeded my expectations with early check-in, super clean and modern updated room, great staff, and beautiful bar and restaurant. Steak and Eggs for breakfast was perfectly done. Thought the $30 amenity usage fee was high and a $27 martini at the Roof top bar was crazy. Other than that, great location and super friendly staff, from the check-in, to the housekeeping and bell hops."

"It wasn’t the most seamless check in as AMEX didn’t send over my confirmation. But that quickly drifted away. The staff is very attentive. People know you by name. They remember your meal options. It’s large enough that your needs are met, but quaint enough that it feels like home. The kicker, Antonio at the bar makes the best French 75 I’ve ever tried. Ask for him by name, and mentioned I sent you"
