PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings on Pennsylvania Avenue carry as much civic weight as the Old Post Office, completed in 1899 to designs by Willard Freeborn and later associated with the Romanesque Revival hand of James Windrim — its clock tower, at 315 feet, still the second tallest structure in the capital. What the Waldorf Astoria Washington D.C. had to solve when it opened in 2016 was how to introduce genuine luxury into a building whose bones are emphatically federal: the great glazed atrium, with its exposed steel diagonal bracing finished in gold, was never meant to be a hotel lobby. Architect Shalom Baranes led the conversion, working within a structure that the National Park Service listed and protected, while interior designer Dayna Lee of Forchielli Glidden brought in a palette of navy, champagne, and gilt that speaks to the building's governmental grandeur without collapsing into pastiche. The atrium's bar, visible in the images, deploys a deep-patterned blue carpet and velvet sofas beneath cascading crystal chandeliers, the original riveted ironwork arching overhead as an unimpeachable historical counterpoint to the hotel furniture below. Guest rooms range between two registers: some feature gilded Baroque bedframes with carved crests and navy damask drapery, while others take a lighter Federal tone — canopied four-posters in cream linen, arched windows, brass swing-arm lamps — the 263 rooms collectively building a portrait of Washington at its most self-consciously ceremonial.

Waldorf Astoria Washington, D.C. Reviews

"Stayed here for one night. The room is extremely well-lit and impressive with the high ceilings and windows. It was very clean. Wifi was fast and reliable. The location is convenient for the attractions on the National Mall, as museums are just one street away. There was only a low hum of traffic from the street outside (not bothersome); there was no noise from other rooms. The gym is large with a variety of machines and plenty of bottled water, as well as some fruit. The breakfast at the restaurant (Peacock Alley) is good but quite expensive even for the quality. Overall, the stay was excellent but worth checking if there are other comparable options at a potentially much lower price point."

"I left the JW Marriott in Washington to move to the Waldorf Astoria because their attention to detail was just so much better although I the Marriott. Their staff was not able to answer questions and give me the service I needed at the Waldorf Astoria we were welcomed at thedoor by Brian who said welcome home and I knew at that moment I would never stay any place else again when I am in DC I of course had a lovely dinner and a lovely lunch at the Peacock restaurant and did some shopping with mahi at the gift shop and it was the most delightful experience not only did she help me find gift for my husband, but she was so delightful more than delightful. She is now a newfound friend forever so if you’re reading this long review your wise and you spend your money wisely because you love good service and excellence if that’s the case I recommend highly that you stay at Waldorf Astoria."

"This is not a five star experience. You would think for this kind of money, they would have a sauna and a steam room that you could use after using the fitness center. There’s a steam room in the spa, but they use this as a money grab you have to pay $120 for a day pass to get access. Frankly, that’s unacceptable for a five stars establishment. Fitness enthusiasts, if you value the use of a sauna or a steam room after your workout, go elsewhere."

"Rooms Need Renovation - improve Food Quality We are staying at this hotel in an upgraded one bedroom suite room. So needs a nice renovation! Toilets are rusty, TVS are all old - outdated and not Smart TV’s. No full length mirrors unless you book a signature suite. Told they had problems with full length mirrors breaking. Really? Rooms so badly need a refresh! Sleep sofa in our room badly stained and had our adult son for one evening. It had sharp lumpy coils with the thinnest stained mattress on it. Awful. Befitting for a 2-3 star hotel at best. Stained mattress pad provided. Ugh. Food quality soo bad. We had the worst bagel breakfast sandwiches ($28.00) ever. Microwaved frozen bagel with the soggiest inedible one egg smothered with cream cheese and a mushy yucky avocado type spread slopped on the bagel. ($28.00) It was awful- truly. We both left the mess on our plates and ate elsewhere. Another morning I ordered room service for standard eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. ($72.00) for one person. Eggs were cold. Breakfast potatoes yuck. I ate the English muffin. Sooo disappointing. This is such a beautiful historic hotel with a lovely Lobby area and harp musician and such wonderful staff - so Nice and accommodating and friendly. Quality though of the rooms and food? Just not there. Such a Shame!"
