PB hotel design editorial

Planted directly on the dune line of Florida's northernmost barrier island, where the Atlantic meets a landscape of saw palmetto and wind-bent live oak, the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island has held its position since 1991 as one of the Southeast's most quietly assured beachfront resorts. The seven-story ochre-stucco structure, its massing broken into pavilion-like wings capped with hipped rooflines, was designed to carry the feeling of a grand coastal manor rather than a convention-block hotel — a scale that reads most persuasively from the beach at low tide, when the building's warm facade catches the early light and mirrors cleanly in the wet sand below. A recent renovation refreshed the interiors considerably, and the images confirm a property moving toward a crisper coastal register: black steel four-poster beds against grasscloth-paneled walls in pale slate blue, herringbone-laid oak flooring, upholstered benches in ticking stripe, and woven rattan chairs on the balconies overlooking the dunes. The fine dining room retains its original warmth through rich cherry-toned wall paneling and arched picture windows that frame the maritime scrubland at dusk. The pool terrace, furnished with curved banquette seating and thatched tiki structures alongside the dune crossover boardwalk, takes a more tropical, loosened approach — color-blocked cushions against the neutral travertine deck, sabal palms threading upward into the open sky. The property holds 446 rooms across its full complex.

"Very disappointed. The entrance and checking in area were congested. The room was spacious but the mattress pad was full of stains, flat old pillows uncomfortable bed. The bathroom was well appointed with thick fluffy towels and fast elevators. Those were the only things appealing to us. Everything else was overrated."

"Beautiful hotel and property, right on the waterfront. Room was very comfortable and well laid out. We were at a conference for more than 900 people and the hotel did a great job on facilities, receptions and meals. While we had a conference rate, the rooms are normally VERY expensive this time of the year (late February). Golf course adjacent to hotel. Parking expensive ($45/day)."

"Great hotel. Rooms are large and well maintained. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Location is fabulous and close to town. The tennis program is fantastic! I highly recommend booking a lesson with the head coach, Rob Lehner. My daughter and I took multiple lessons and had a great time and learned quite a bit!"

"This is a beautiful hotel. We absolutely loved our stay here. Our oceanview room was stunning with a balcony where we could have our morning coffee while reading a book. The wide work table was a great touch where two people could comfortably work. The housekeeping and beach staff were fantastic. Our dinner at Salt was great - the servers were attentive, food was wonderful and the ambience excellent. We look forward to coming back again."
