PB hotel design editorial

Planted directly on the dune line of Florida's northernmost barrier island, where the Atlantic meets a landscape of saw palmetto and wind-bent live oak, the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island has held its position since 1991 as one of the Southeast's most quietly assured beachfront resorts. The seven-story ochre-stucco structure, its massing broken into pavilion-like wings capped with hipped rooflines, was designed to carry the feeling of a grand coastal manor rather than a convention-block hotel — a scale that reads most persuasively from the beach at low tide, when the building's warm facade catches the early light and mirrors cleanly in the wet sand below. A recent renovation refreshed the interiors considerably, and the images confirm a property moving toward a crisper coastal register: black steel four-poster beds against grasscloth-paneled walls in pale slate blue, herringbone-laid oak flooring, upholstered benches in ticking stripe, and woven rattan chairs on the balconies overlooking the dunes. The fine dining room retains its original warmth through rich cherry-toned wall paneling and arched picture windows that frame the maritime scrubland at dusk. The pool terrace, furnished with curved banquette seating and thatched tiki structures alongside the dune crossover boardwalk, takes a more tropical, loosened approach — color-blocked cushions against the neutral travertine deck, sabal palms threading upward into the open sky. The property holds 446 rooms across its full complex.

"Stayed & played for 5 days. Lovely resort, amazing staff. Unfortunately they are woefully understaffed...always a line at the front desk, long wait times for every meal. Despite being short-staffed, everyone was pleasant, remembered us, was extremely helpful and as responsive as they could be."

"This hotel is amazing! Exceptional staff, facilities, accommodations and dining. 5 star! A++++! Special kudos to Joanna and Kristi in Guest Relations. They were gracious, informative and generous prior to and during our wedding anniversary stay. The over-and-above diamond tiara award goes to Kaeyler at the front desk. She is THE BEST. Her enthusiasm and sincere desire to deliver an amazing stay radiates. Such a pro! The Ritz Carlton Amelia Island was well beyond our expectations. We shall return."

"The 50-minute facial was underwhelming. I also added a collagen mask and scalp massage for an additional $100. The “collagen mask” was simply a sheet mask (a $60 sheet mask) that repeatedly slid off my face while the provider attempted a scalp massage. Unfortunately, the scalp massage itself was very minimal—it felt as though oil was applied to my scalp with little actual massage. I’ve had significantly better scalp massages at my hair salon. Given the added services, I expected the overall experience to last longer; however, the appointment remained only 50 minutes. This made it feel as though portions of the facial were either omitted or rushed. Overall, the experience was very disappointing. As a local, I love the hotel and the spa facilities, but the services provided do not meet the standards expected of a five-star hotel. I have received better facials at local spas and chains for less than half of the cost. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to the spa."

"Arrived Christmas Eve left 1-3-2026 It was very busy worse than summer. Had several massages, a facial, haircut and had some problems but the Spa Mgr., Camille made everything wonderful and special thank you. I wouldn’t go this time of year again. Our room smelled so we bought several candles to try to hide the smell. We had an oceanfront suite, beautiful view but the smell was like stinky feet. Our housekeeper was wonderful Diane she even gave us a candle. Our server, Avery at Tidewater was excellent. We love this place the employees make it special as well as that view. It does need some work and more staff."
