Clearwater Beach has long attracted the kind of resort development that treats the Gulf of Mexico as backdrop rather than protagonist, but the JW Marriott Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa, completed in 2023, takes a different position. Designed by Baker Barrios Architects and Behar Peteranecz Architecture, the 11-floor tower sits directly at the waterline, its coastal turquoise cladding pulling the color of the Gulf into the building's own skin. At 162 guestrooms and 36 whole-ownership residences, it carries the distinction of being the first JW Marriott property conceived and built from the ground up — a brief that gave CallisonRTKL unusual latitude to make the interior language coherent from foundation to roofline. That coherence is visible throughout. Guestrooms are finished in sand and dove grey, with upholstered headboards in pale linen, gold-hardware dressers in white lacquer, and patterned carpets in soft aquatic blues — all of it framed by full-height sliding doors opening to water views on both the Gulf and bay sides. The restaurant brings a warmer, more dramatic atmosphere: oversized woven rattan pendants cascade from a double-height ceiling above walnut-topped tables and teal velvet dining chairs, green glazed tile columns giving the room genuine depth. On the upper deck, hooded daybed loungers line a rooftop pool whose sightlines carry unobstructed to the Gulf horizon. Custom lighting by CM Kling and commissioned works including the lobby sculpture Seagrass and the ceiling installation Wave thread the building's coastal references into something more precise than decoration.
