PB hotel design editorial

Planted on a five-acre peninsula where the Atlantic meets the Gulf of Mexico in Marathon, Florida, Isla Bella Beach Resort arrived in 2018 as a rare attempt to give the Middle Keys a resort of genuine architectural ambition. The low-rise buildings draw on the vernacular of traditional Florida coastal construction — white-painted clapboard cladding, deep wraparound verandas stacked across three floors, X-pattern balustrade panels, and cedar-toned deck stairs stepping directly onto the sand — producing a massing that suggests a well-established fishing community rather than a purpose-built resort. Blue-painted window surrounds and louvred details tie the exterior palette to the water on both sides. Inside, the interiors strike a balance between crisp resort white and the saturated blues of the surrounding sea. Rooms are furnished with lacquered white case pieces, silver-glazed ceramic lamps, and deep navy geometric carpet, while floor-to-ceiling curtains in a bold indigo palm-tree print — a pattern that recurs across roman blinds and scatter cushions — carry a confident tropical personality without tipping into kitsch. The pool pavilion, capped with a ribbed pyramidal roof, sets wicker chaise longues in geometric-patterned cushions against limestone-toned pool decking, blue-and-white striped umbrellas completing the nautical register. The waterfront restaurant opens its walls entirely to the bay, rattan armchairs and encaustic-patterned floor tiles grounding the dining room in a vernacular that feels closer to the Florida Keys' own material culture than to generic resort hospitality.

"We absolutely loved our stay at Isla Bella. Our room was spacious and clean, with two large bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The kids loved having their own space and our room was centrally located on the property - not too far from the beach bar/restaurant. The overall lay-out of the property is excellent and made it very easy for us to be there. Lots of fun activities and places to play wherever we looked but also never felt overly crowded or that we would lose track of the kids. We never had issues finding a chair. The staff was also friendly and always offered to assist with whatever we needed. We loved breakfast and dinner at Mahina, the Marketplace, the hammocks at Pelican Point, the daily activities, the warm water in the pools, the beach, and the overall vibes of the Christmas lights and tiki torches, which made it feel cozy. The ONLY negative was the sushi restaurant. We ordered it on our last night. It took over an hour to get the sushi and the food (the sushi and the noodles) was not great. Especially if only a few types of rolls are offered, we expected they would be really good but were a bit disappointed. I think the idea of having food service in that area of the beach is great but if there is not a kitchen able to accommodate the volume or type of food, maybe try a different idea for food (even if it's just an ice cream bar)."

"Resort is beautiful and rooms were great and so was the cleaning service every day! Customer service at the resort was top-tier. Restaurants and food were amazing. I did yoga with Lynn Wednesday morning and it was the perfect way to end my trip."

"I will start by saying this is the first time I have ever written a review… it’s just not my thing. Our family is avid travelers - from all across the US and internationally. We have a 10 year old and 7 year old and are trying to teach them the importance of travel, culture, appreciation of different places people, etc… One thing that’s super important to us when we travel is adjoining rooms - it’s not our first rodeo! We booked well in advance to assure we’d have that. Then we called to follow up because we know how things go… the hotel assured we would have adjoining rooms. We called on our way up from Miami to see if we could check in early - they said they would see what they can do - and hey do we have adjoining rooms, yes! We arrived at 1p, check in was 4p. Rooms were side by side, but not adjoining. Hotel was at full capacity so not a lot of options…. Management was not great. We ended up in a room with two double beds and a king… We are paying a lot of money and don’t want to be rude, we thought we had already arranged all of this. It’s freezing and windy and we are outside with kids from 1-4p… after lots of travel. Also just not so funny side note…left bags at front desk at check in…went back to get my jacket and front desk lady said I couldn’t retrieve without my ticket… my husband had ticket… she clearly knew we had been there 10 minutes prior to check-in… just not a great start to our visit! Last, we get settled and in our room and notice walls are super thin you can hear everything - elevator, people walking by and above… my kids keep waking up because they hear things."

"We've stayed at isle Bella in the past, and it was always such a perfect setting. great Restaurant, great beach bar, cool little marketplace for small items, as many excursions as you can put in a week, and a staff second to none! In a time that's almost impossible to find good people, they've found a way to find and keep good staff, which makes your stay all the more enjoyable. Can''t wait to get back!"
