PB hotel design editorial

Five acres of coral-sand peninsula jutting into the Gulf of Mexico off Little Torch Key, accessible only by seaplane or boat, set the terms of everything that followed when Little Palm Island Resort & Spa was established here in 1988. The island had served as a fishing camp for President Harry Truman and his congressional colleagues in the 1950s, and that sense of privileged remove — deliberately cut off from the Overseas Highway's chain of civilization — has shaped the property's identity ever since. Architect Gary Wendt designed the thatched-roof bungalows in a register that draws from British colonial Caribbean vernacular, with pitched palm-frond roofs, deep wraparound verandas, and heavy mahogany louvered shutters folding back to dissolve the boundary between interior and water. The thirty suites are distributed across fifteen duplex bungalows, keeping the density low enough that the property carries the atmosphere of a private compound rather than a resort. Interiors layer Persian kilim rugs over terracotta tile, four-poster beds dressed in sheer linen panels beneath vaulted bamboo ceilings, and rattan furniture alongside crystal chandelier drops — a combination that feels closer to a well-traveled planter's house than to conventional hospitality design. The open-sided bar pavilion, its thatched ceiling hung with a shell-and-glass pendant light, frames the horizon between coconut palms at dusk. A fringed-umbrella pool deck added in a subsequent renovation introduces a crisper, more contemporary note without unsettling the island's essential character.

"Wow, easily one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. It’s a short drive from Key West to the lobby where a ten minute boat ride ferries you to the island. Stunningly landscaped and maintained island with around 30 suites. (I believe suites share a wall so two suites to a building). Your suite has a private sandy “backyard” with chairs and a fire pit that gets lit nightly. You have a little private furnished deck. A full bath with tub and shower plus an outdoor shower. A living room, beautifully furnished, with a mini bar. No TVs! The bed is very tall but there’s a little step stool for you! Very nice pool, spa, and gym. Ever get frustrated trying to score a pool chair or go broke reserving a cabana? Unheard of here. Enough niceness for everyone, no stress. Staff is extremely nice and accommodating. An example: the ceiling fan in the bedroom was on “high” speed and I wished to lower it but there was no pull chain and no remote control (living room fan has remote control). I asked the staff about it. Within an hour, they had come to my room and added a pull chain for my convenience!! How many times at any old hotel have you asked maintenance to fix something broken and they never even show up or worse lie and say they fixed it when they didn’t! Food is exceptional. We dined on the beach, no problem. I think they spray for noseeums but I brought DEET wipes and we were fine. There was a big grill set up with meat and veg and fruit on it. If you never had grilled pineapple, try it here! The bar is well stocked, ask for anything, they have it. Delightful servers. The sandy beach is not huge (it’s a tiny island) but perfectly adequate. Plenty of chaises set up. There’s a gift shop with everything from t-shirts to fancy dresses, hats and shoes too. Everyone dresses for dinner here. Flowy dresses for the ladies and collared shirts for the gents. It’s a nice atmosphere. I enjoyed two spa services: a facial and a massage. Easily the best service ever. If you want to destress and reset, spend some time here. Highly recommended."

"The location is private and the atmosphere is relaxed. The rooms are cottages, with large living room, bedroom and bath. Very clean and well maintained. It is a quiet, very relaxing experience. THE SERVICE AND THE STAFF ARE AMAZING. Very attentive and if you need something or have a special request, they will make it happen. While most would consider it expensive, having been to the resort I would say that it provides great value. A travel experience that you will not forget."

"Place is one of a kind! Awesome experience. Costs are clearly reflective of being on an island-pricey!!"
