PB hotel design editorial

Five acres of coral-sand peninsula jutting into the Gulf of Mexico off Little Torch Key, accessible only by seaplane or boat, set the terms of everything that followed when Little Palm Island Resort & Spa was established here in 1988. The island had served as a fishing camp for President Harry Truman and his congressional colleagues in the 1950s, and that sense of privileged remove — deliberately cut off from the Overseas Highway's chain of civilization — has shaped the property's identity ever since. Architect Gary Wendt designed the thatched-roof bungalows in a register that draws from British colonial Caribbean vernacular, with pitched palm-frond roofs, deep wraparound verandas, and heavy mahogany louvered shutters folding back to dissolve the boundary between interior and water. The thirty suites are distributed across fifteen duplex bungalows, keeping the density low enough that the property carries the atmosphere of a private compound rather than a resort. Interiors layer Persian kilim rugs over terracotta tile, four-poster beds dressed in sheer linen panels beneath vaulted bamboo ceilings, and rattan furniture alongside crystal chandelier drops — a combination that feels closer to a well-traveled planter's house than to conventional hospitality design. The open-sided bar pavilion, its thatched ceiling hung with a shell-and-glass pendant light, frames the horizon between coconut palms at dusk. A fringed-umbrella pool deck added in a subsequent renovation introduces a crisper, more contemporary note without unsettling the island's essential character.

"Selfishly, I hesitate to write a review on this little treasure for fear of it drawing in the crowds. Going to Little Palm is like being transported to some remote island in the South Pacific, yet it is only a ten minute boat ride away. Once you board the ferry somehow the anticipation pushes out all of the hassles of life. The staff greet you as if you're some visiting dignitary and the special feeling is there until you are sitting your car days later thinking "I can't believe it is over!" The ambiance of the thatched roof huts puts you in another place in time. These very private luxury accommodations have no TV.. It is magic...who wants to know what's going on in the rest of the world. You are totally absorbed in an unreal tropical luxury experience. It is quiet, uncrowded and unbelievably friendly...of course the staff is friendly and attentive, but the guests are all engaging and conversational; it is like nothing I have seen anywhere. The food, the service, the accommodations, the views, the immersive experience is like none other. This is one of our favorite places on the planet. Certainly it is expensive, very expensive, but you could spend $10K on airfare chasing this kind of experience on the other side of the planet, yet it is right here in the USA! That's why we keep going back!"

"Five stars. Little Palm Island is one of those rare places that feels magical and you just need to experience for yourself. From the moment you arrive by boat, the whole experience feels like stepping into a tropical fever dream in the best possible way. The island itself is gorgeous. Lush palms, little sandy paths, hammocks everywhere, and a very charming Old Florida meets private Caribbean island atmosphere. It somehow manages to feel luxurious without feeling stuffy. The food was outstanding across the board. Dinner every night felt special, and the bar scene was surprisingly fun for such a secluded resort. The cocktails are not messing around, though. Upon arrival they hand you a very strong rum drink, then follow it up with a welcome bottle of champagne. Let’s just say the island encourages bad decisions in a very charming way. If you happen to overcommit to the booze like I did, you might find yourself admiring the palm trees flowing in the breeze as you sit in your giant outdoor tub and then wake up the following day with a splitting headache. In that case, the Cheeseburger in Paradise is the hangover cure. Genuinely one of the best vacation cheeseburgers I’ve ever had. That burger probably saved lives during our stay. What I loved most was the personality of the place. So many luxury resorts feel interchangeable now, but Little Palm has character. It feels romantic, slightly eccentric, relaxed, and memorable in a way that is increasingly hard to find. This is not the place to go if you want a giant flashy resort with endless activities. This is the place you go to disappear for a few days, drink too much rum, eat excellent food, and remember what relaxing actually feels like."
