PB hotel design editorial

Stock Island — the working waterfront just east of Key West's tourist mile, still smelling of diesel and fresh catch — was an unlikely address for a design-forward hotel when the Perry Hotel Key West opened in 2017. The three-storey property, with 100 rooms arranged in low-slung wings around a central pool courtyard, draws its character from this maritime industrial context rather than running from it. The exterior elevation visible in the images shows warm terracotta-toned cladding panels punctuating white rendered balcony decks, triangular canopy fins angled above each room to manage the subtropical sun — a geometry that carries something of the mid-century Florida motel tradition updated with sharper detailing. Inside, the rooms take a pragmatic approach: wood-effect tile flooring in grey-washed tones, chunky dark-stained platform beds with leather-panel headboards set against whitewashed shiplap wall panels, and panoramic photography of Caribbean waters hung horizontally above the bedline. The casual register continues through the restaurant, where reclaimed timber wall cladding and an exposed open kitchen with a blackboard menu listing fresh fish and oysters give the dining room the atmosphere of a well-designed fish shack rather than resort hotel food and beverage. The aerial view confirms the organizing logic of the property — a lap pool at the centre, wrapped in coconut palms and white-canopied sun loungers, with guest room balconies on all sides turning inward to face the water.

"No breakfast or alternate food available before 8am. NO BUENO! We go fishing early and have to something to eat before departing. Nice marina and facilities. Staff was helpful. Food at Matt’s was usually marginal, sometimes good. They ruined our lobster for cook your catch dinner."

"The hotel is nice enough. The staff was very helpful and responsive. One bad thing was the bed. It was hard as a rock and the springs creaked every time you moved. Both of our backs were screaming by the end of the stay. (4 nights) I must say that we did not complain to staff until checkout because we weren’t going to pack up and move to a different room. Some of the other furniture in the room was very warm out as well. At the restaurant for breakfast the second morning we encountered a very rude waiter. When we were being seated by the hostess she was trying to seat us at the smallest table for two I have ever seen. So since we were the only people in the place, looking around a lot of the tables were these same tables, so we found one where two of the small tables were push together for 4. So we chose that one and she sat us there. Then this waiter comes over, grabs one of the tables and pulls it away, saying we have to leave this one for other guests. I looked around and saw we were still alone in the restaurant. It wasn’t what he did, it was how rudely he did it. Normally we would have just gotten up and walked out, but we didn’t have time to drive into town before our scheduled snorkeling trip. I know the table size seems like such a small thing, but the waiter elevated this to a major thing with his attitude. Through out the breakfast he was just Abrupt when speaking to us. This can be handled with the tip, but it was very unusual treatment in a hotel like the Perry. Although it was very convenient to the marina where the boat were going out on was slipped, we would never choose this location again!!"
