PB hotel design editorial

Richard Meier's pair of crisp white towers, completed in 2017, frame a 1930s Spanish Colonial clubhouse that Thomas Hastings built for Harvey Firestone and his circle — and it is this collision of eras, held together by a shared address on the Surfside shoreline, that gives the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club its particular charge. The original Surf Club building, with its painted coffered ceiling, Moorish arched windows, and black-and-white marble floors, has been restored as the principal dining room and carries the weight of its history visibly: large brass lanterns cluster above Eero Saarinen Executive chairs in sage velvet, tropical palms softening the grandeur without disguising it. Meier's new towers, clad in his characteristic white aluminum and floor-to-ceiling glass, deliver 77 guest rooms and suites whose interiors, designed by Joseph Dirand, pursue a quiet Mediterranean severity — travertine floors, linen-upholstered platforms, oak millwork with geometric relief carving, and deep-set balconies framing the Atlantic in an uninterrupted rectangle of turquoise. A second room typology, cooler and more linear, wraps walls in ribbed white paneling and grounds the palette with moss-green bench ends and raw oak furniture. At pool level, teak-framed sun loungers line a still reflecting pool backed by mature royal palms, the composition disciplined enough to feel more Côte d'Azur than Miami — which was, almost certainly, the intention.

Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Surfside, Florida Reviews

"We had an outstanding stay at the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club with our son. The service was excellent from start to finish — from the initial valet greeting all the way through departure and checkout. Even measured against the typically very high Four Seasons standards, the team here operates at the highest level. Everything felt smooth, attentive, and genuinely well-executed. The pool setup is terrific. We reserved a private cabana for one of the days and it was absolutely worth it — comfortable, well-serviced, and a great way to relax. The overall pool environment strikes a really nice balance between calm and family-friendly, similar to what we experienced at other top-tier Four Seasons properties. Our room was spectacular — spacious, beautifully designed, and extremely comfortable. In-room dining was another highlight: the food was phenomenal, perfectly cooked, and delivered professionally and promptly. It consistently exceeded expectations for hotel dining. The beach is a bit on the smaller side, and while it is carefully maintained (they rake it each morning), by the afternoon some seaweed had blown in. That said, it didn’t take away too much from the overall experience, which was otherwise excellent. Having recently stayed at another Four Seasons property on the same trip, what stood out here was the consistency and polish across every touchpoint — service, food, facilities, and overall execution. It made for a very easy, enjoyable stay. Checking out, it occurred to me that I literally could not think of a thing that was not perfectly handled. Overall, this is a top-tier property with outstanding service and a very refined experience."

"This is our 2nd time at Surfside. We love the location as it is away from the fray of South Beach and has all the elegance and level of service one hopes at a Four Seasons. It is a beautiful hotel with gorgeous common areas. Multiple pools and spots to eat through out the day. If you plan to eat at the adjoining restaurant Surf Club make a reservation. They are not part of the Four Seasons in that you can expect a table as a guest and you are not able to charge to the room. The bar there is very small and we did not have luck getting a bar seat or table. The service there was a bit rude unlike the Four Seasons. You get what you pay for here. Shout out to Sophie Gaitch who quickly rectified an issue with house keeping. It was so refreshing to not have to ask for amazing service or an apology - it was swiftly rectified. So rare these days. We will be back anytime we are in Miami."

"The Four Seasons Surf Club is the only reason I visit Miami. In a city known for its energy and crowds, this property offers a private, tranquil pocket that feels like a world away—yet remains close enough to explore everything the area has to offer. The hotel's size is ideal if you prefer an elevated exclusive feel. With under 80 rooms, the property never feels crowded. There's always plenty of space at the pool or on the beach, creating an uncrowded atmosphere. The five-star service here ranks among my top three hotel experiences in the last year. Starting the day with breakfast service at Lido is a genuine delight, and the staff—particularly Patch at the front desk, who is so sweet—make every interaction feel warm and personal. Between the two on-site restaurants, I highly recommend The Surf Club for dinner—it's exceptional."

"Luxury has really gone down the tubes when it comes to etiquette these days. Sunday Brunch at Lido $125 doesn’t come with basic coffee, tea, or orange juice. They want you to pay extra. Money is not the problem here. It’s that a 5 star luxury hotel no longer understands what basic dining etiquette means. Your brunch should include something as basic as “basic coffee/tea”. This is a lack in decency and basic dining etiquette. Charge a higher brunch fee and include the basic coffee/tea if you must but asking to nickel and dime on top for some basic coffee is just cheap. Also didn’t enjoy the experience of sitting in a dark drafty room throughout the whole brunch; and there were barely any pastries. 2 out of 5 for overall dining experience."

"Without a doubt, this is the most elegant, the classiest and most refined hotel in all of Miami. It is exclusive, it is super expensive and it is exquisite. The property doesn’t boast timeless elegance, it exudes it. The refinement doesn’t feel manufactured. It feels natural and intrinsic. The walls and the pillars speak to you and tell you about the history of the building and the property at large. My gushing above extends to the staff, the food, the bar and all the amenities of this hotel. The Michelin starred restaurant Thomas Keller is a little disappointing (see separate review). Otherwise, out of the many four seasons hotels, this one stands out as among the best of the best."
