PB hotel design editorial

Kenneth Treister's organic concrete facade on Mary Street in Coconut Grove is one of Miami's genuinely singular pieces of architecture — a sculptural eruption of foliated metalwork panels, biomorphic white plasterwork, and crowning finials that place the building somewhere between Art Nouveau fantasy and subtropical fever dream. Completed in 1977 and recently reborn as Mayfair House Hotel & Garden, the five-storey structure was conceived as an open-air atrium shopping and hotel complex, its exterior relief panels cast with tropical botanical motifs that now carry the patina of nearly five decades of Florida weather. The interiors, reimagined by Dakota Development and designer Nicole Hollis, follow the building's exuberant logic without mimicking it. Guest rooms arrive in deep forest greens and warm terracottas, polished concrete floors grounding a loose assembly of curved burl-wood room dividers, arched upholstered headboards in banana-leaf print fabrics, fringed ottomans, and freestanding clawfoot tubs painted to match the walls — the atmosphere closer to a well-traveled collector's apartment than anything conventionally hotelier. The rooftop pool deck, lined with green-and-white striped parasols and mosaic tile pool surrounds, anchors the property's social life above the Grove's canopy, a hand-painted floral mural marking one end of the water in the exuberant register the whole building sets from street level.

"Worked with the staff to make a surprise for my brother and his fiancee and they went above and beyond! So grateful to them for their true hospitality and help. Quick response, kindness, and efficiency. Shout out to Alejandro Ponce for stellar work"

"This COULD be a great hotel. The staff is truly nice, the rooms are relatively clean and the hotel property is stunning. But issues which are unfortunate make it impossible to give this hotel a better review. They include a serious issue with hot water. Every member of our party had the same in their room every day we stayed and ended up taking cold showers. Clearly a pervasive issue and so unacceptable. The rooms are also too dark with inadequate overall lighting. The bathroom also needed an illuminating mirror. Finally, the elevators are too complex and you end up waiting constantly and need an engineering degree to use them. Could be a much better hotel. But someone needs to dial into the details!"

"We stayed at this hotel for three weeks in February. It was our second longer term stay at the hotel, and we enjoyed it once again. The hotel rooms surround a beautiful courtyard filled with palm trees, plants and fountains. This space establishes the vibe for the hotel. The hotel is older with a lot of character and the rooms are comfortable. The construction of the building doesn't allow for a lot of natural light in the rooms, but we enjoyed the spacious balcony. The hotel is located steps away from the restaurants and commercial area of Coconut Grove. We also found it very easy to explore other Miami environs from this location including Little Havana, Wynwood, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, South Beach and the Everglades. The breakfast included with the stay was very good and the staff attentive. Specifically, we'd like to recognize Emily, Lorenzo, Kaylan, and Marlene for their great service. We also got to know the valet staff well! Miguel, William, Carlos, Fabrizio, and Lazaro were all very professional and helpful. They were always very prompt in getting our car to us when we needed it and offered helpful advice. The only area of the hotel that needs some improvement is housekeeping. The staff was very friendly but sometimes we needed to make multiple requests to receive what we asked for."

"Beautiful looking hotel but when we checked in our room wasnt ready we were told we would be either messaged or called but no one contacted us at all.Room was lovely but the bed wasnt made properly the sheets were not tucked in at all. No Iron or board i had to ask for one and that did arrive the next morning. Valet parking did seem quick but it just felt like everyone was just after a huge tip !! Breakfast we waited 15 mins for a table once seated i asked could i just have 2 toast which was on the sides menu at a cost of $6 i was told it wasnt on the main menu so would be charged for it ,even though I didnt want the main costing $22 it just didnt make sense .Pool area was lovely but cocktails are very expensive .Overall nice hotel but I wouldnt go back .We did meet a lovely staff member called Michael but only once .Room cleaners came back on the 2nd day to clean but at 330pm we were resting before we went out for the evening .so told them no .I found it very frustrating staying at this hotel not relaxing at all !! We had previously tried to contact the hotel as this was a special trip for our 40th wedding anniversary they failed to contact us at all .Grwat shame !!"

"This hotel should be protected as an historic architectural gem. Loved the 80s design and detail. Service was great, rooms charming and clean. Ideal location. Pool nice. Loved the claw footed tub in the room. Everyday Yoga excellent and made the stay worth it! Coffee each morning much appreciated. It’s the small amenities that make a huge difference."
