PB hotel design editorial

Morris Lapidus drew the DiLido Hotel in 1953 as a manifesto in white concrete — curving parapets, horizontal banding, and that particular MiMo swagger that made Collins Avenue feel like the future. When The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach emerged from a $200 million redevelopment in December 2003, a three-floor addition brought the tower to eleven stories, but the bones remained unmistakably Lapidus: the signature bubble wall, the black-and-white terrazzo floors, the sense that glamour should announce itself from across the room. A further $90 million renovation completed in 2020 refined rather than erased, with Meg Sharpe handling the public spaces and Cristian Rubio of Hirsch Bedner Associates reimagining the 376 guestrooms. Those rooms now carry a palette that suits the light pouring off the Atlantic — pale oak floors, cream channeled headboards against white paneled walls with restrained Art Deco relief work, and deep navy velvet seating punctuated by amber-gold bolsters and ochre lacquered room dividers. The suites gain circular plaster ceiling recesses and wraparound glass that frames the South Beach skyline like a wide-angle postcard. Outside, a cross-shaped pool sits between low white wings of cabana-style accommodation, with the beach and that particular shade of Caribbean turquoise visible just beyond the palms. The restaurant terrace, draped in cascading tropical greenery over teak slatted ceilings and encaustic-tiled floors, manages to feel like a garden that wandered in from somewhere slightly wilder than Miami.

"The lobby is nice and the staff has been friendly. However, the room and corridors are horrid. Run down, tired, drab, deferred maintenance galore, etc. Will never remotely return, may leave early."

"Was housed in the Remote Wing, needed two sets of elevators, and a long inefficient walk each time, temperamental elevators, oldish systems, breakfast ok, systems antiquated. Got a welcome letter addressed to someone else ."

"pon arrival, we experienced a significant delay in receiving our room keys—about 2.5 hours past the posted 4 PM check-in time. During that time, communication from staff was limited, and I had to contact customer service via telephone to get the issue escalated. The lobby was extremely crowded due to a business conference, which made the wait even more uncomfortable. Hardly a seat to be found. Unfortunately, the room itself had ongoing noise issues. It appeared to be located near a mechanical or air conditioning unit, and there was loud vibrating noise both nights of our stay. We also heard frequent slamming from a stairwell door directly across the hallway from our door.. By the second night, I was calling the front desk at 3 AM because the noise disrupted sleep both nights of our stay. Common areas were also heavily impacted by conference traffic. We had hoped to enjoy a quiet drink at the bar in the evenings, but it was consistently crowded and loud. Not the vibe for a romantic night cap. This trip was meant to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, so the overall experience was disappointing—especially given the premium price point and expectations associated with a Ritz-Carlton stay. The hotel did offer one complimentary night and a pool daybed, which I appreciated. However, the overall stay still fell short. Management did follow up after my email, but the resolution felt limited considering the issues we experienced. The director basically said tough luck the room was still occupied we will charge you accordingly. Based on this visit, I would not recommend this location for couples or families seeking a relaxing luxury getaway. Added photo of our “ocean view” room. Note the size and proximity of the mechanical unit that vibrated our entire room."
