PB hotel design editorial

Few diving boards carry landmark status, but the one at The Shelborne by Proper — a tiered white plinth rising from the pool deck like a piece of mid-century sculpture — does exactly that, and it sets the tone for everything else. The original structure was raised in 1941 by Igor Polevitzky and Thomas Triplett Russell as an Art Deco oceanfront tower on Collins Avenue, then expanded in 1958 under Morris Lapidus, the architect who gave Miami Modern its theatrical confidence. The $100 million renovation completed in 2025, with Bermello Ajamil & Partners as architect of record, preserved both layers of that history while bringing in Barcelona-based ADC Atelier — Aaron David Clarke and Marta Tuneu — to reimagine 251 rooms and all the spaces connecting them. What Clarke and Tuneu delivered feels less like a hotel renovation and more like a considered argument for a certain kind of tropical calm. The palette runs through honed Perlino marble, travertine, and pale ash wood — materials that hold the South Beach light without bouncing it back aggressively. Guest rooms carry sage-green upholstered headboards and boucle-covered window sofas positioned to frame the Atlantic as a living canvas. The lobby bar, with its double-height draped windows, brushed brass pendant lights, and deep lounge chairs in cream bouclé and woven textile, has the atmosphere of a private club that forgot to lock its doors. Outside, mint-striped chaises and a garden terrace thick with palms and sea grape complete a picture that honors the building's glamorous past without being enslaved to it.

"Blown away by this place! From the moment we pulled up everything has been like a dream. We were able to check in at 11am, and they gave us a 2pm late check out at no charge. The staff are so friendly and attentive. The rooms are huge, cool, and clean. The pool setup is top notch. And Oliver down at the beach is my guy! Thanks Shelborne for a perfect stay."

"We stayed at The Shelborne by Proper as a family during our recent trip to Miami and had a great experience overall. The hotel itself is beautiful. The renovation has been done really well, preserving the character of this iconic Miami Beach property while giving it a fresh and modern feel. The location is excellent, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and everything was spotless throughout our stay. A special thank you to Adrian at the front entrance. He was always friendly, professional, and happy to help, and his attitude genuinely made a difference to our experience. We also really appreciated the complimentary hotel transportation around the local area. It made getting around South Beach much easier. Another example of great service was when our son accidentally left his sunglasses in one of the hotel vehicles. We mentioned it to the staff and they immediately took care of it. By the time we got back to the hotel, the sunglasses were already waiting for us in our room. A small detail perhaps, but one that shows how much the team cares about its guests. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly Pauline. We tried several highly rated restaurants during our week in Miami, but Pauline was easily our favourite. The food was excellent, the service was attentive without being intrusive, and the whole experience felt special. In fact, it was the best meal we had during our trip. We would happily return to the hotel just to dine there again. If I had to point out a couple of areas for improvement, the main one would be the pool area. The pool itself is lovely, but it was often very crowded, making it difficult to find loungers and fully relax. For a luxury hotel, it sometimes felt busier than expected. We also felt the food served around the pool could be improved. It wasn't bad by any means, but it didn't match the quality of the rest of the hotel, especially when compared with the outstanding experience at Pauline. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend The Shelborne by Proper. It's a stylish hotel in a fantastic location, with excellent service and one of the best restaurant experiences we found in Miami."

"Let me begin by saying that I was really looking forward to my trip to Miami Beach after several years and particularly, this hotel. Reviews cited its multimillion dollar renovation, location, blah...blah...blah and overall, gave it high marks. Not that the hotel wasn't lovely. The lobby is spacious and beautiful, as are the rooms, which are all decorated in subtle earth tones. But that's pretty much where the good part ends. The pool area, although nicely appointed, is small and cramped, especially when children are present. The area itself is clean and well-kept and the staff was courteous. The beach area was beautiful except for the excess seaweed (I know, I know, Florida in August...)which kept me from enjoying the ocean because my rule of thumb is that if I can't see my feet I don't go in! We ate one time at the hotel's main restaurant, Pauline, for breakfast. Only a 5 out of 10...nothing to write home about and extremely expensive. Dinner at the bar, however, was a different story. We ordered several different appetizers and shared, and WOW, I am so surprised that people are not fighting to get in to try this exceptional and innovative food! My biggest complaint was the housekeeping staff. As we woke up the morning after our first night we discovered that the bedsheet had a large hole in it! We left a nice tip and asked housekeeping to change it and they did. The next night, the fresh sheet they replaced the ripped one with had bloodstains on it. Again, we nicely asked for fresh sheets and left a very nice tip. On our last day, housekeeping failed to show up altogether...despite a call downstairs and reassurance that someone would come and make up the room, no one ever did. Despite these few kinks we did have a relaxing weekend. Probably a one-and-done for us, though."
