PB hotel design editorial

Few diving boards carry landmark status, but the one at The Shelborne by Proper — a tiered white plinth rising from the pool deck like a piece of mid-century sculpture — does exactly that, and it sets the tone for everything else. The original structure was raised in 1941 by Igor Polevitzky and Thomas Triplett Russell as an Art Deco oceanfront tower on Collins Avenue, then expanded in 1958 under Morris Lapidus, the architect who gave Miami Modern its theatrical confidence. The $100 million renovation completed in 2025, with Bermello Ajamil & Partners as architect of record, preserved both layers of that history while bringing in Barcelona-based ADC Atelier — Aaron David Clarke and Marta Tuneu — to reimagine 251 rooms and all the spaces connecting them. What Clarke and Tuneu delivered feels less like a hotel renovation and more like a considered argument for a certain kind of tropical calm. The palette runs through honed Perlino marble, travertine, and pale ash wood — materials that hold the South Beach light without bouncing it back aggressively. Guest rooms carry sage-green upholstered headboards and boucle-covered window sofas positioned to frame the Atlantic as a living canvas. The lobby bar, with its double-height draped windows, brushed brass pendant lights, and deep lounge chairs in cream bouclé and woven textile, has the atmosphere of a private club that forgot to lock its doors. Outside, mint-striped chaises and a garden terrace thick with palms and sea grape complete a picture that honors the building's glamorous past without being enslaved to it.

"Well, my room was great. I had a very bad experience with the customer service. I had a package delivered containing medicine that I was never to pick up. I cannot get returned phone calls and I’m out several hundred dollars and had health risk. The management truly did not care about the issue and never called me back the last two times they said they would."

"Lovely property with a nice aesthetic. We had a 2 bed villa which is great for families… bathrooms are really small though and I think make it more of a 4 start property than the 5 star we expected. TVs very frustrating to work"

"I stayed at the Sheborne prior to the renovation, and it was very tired and worn. The hotel has been renovated, but it's just mediocre, very Pottery Barn. I was told that it is a lower cost Edition, but it's really just a mediocre Miami Beach hotels. I would recommend spending a few more dollars to stay at the Edition."

"We stayed at the Shelborne from Thursday to Sunday after a lot of deliberation between this hotel, the Edition, and the W. As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum member, I have stayed at many Marriott properties over the years, so I do not say this lightly: this stay would likely have been a 3 to 4 star experience for us because of the room air conditioning/comfort issues, but Joshua and Armaan at the beach club elevated it to a 5-star one. The hotel is beautifully renovated, stylish, clean, and full of character. The design feels thoughtful and elevated, and the property itself has a strong sense of place. Across the hotel, the staff was warm, gracious, and welcoming, and it is clear there is a strong service culture here. The one major issue during our stay was the air conditioning in Room 740 partial oceanfront. Unfortunately, the room felt consistently humid and too warm, which made sleeping uncomfortable for all of us over three nights. To be fair, the staff responded every time we raised it. They came up, checked things, changed filters, and did their best to help, so this felt more like a system issue than a service issue. Still, in a city like Miami, especially in April, air conditioning is essential, and I do hope management takes a serious look at this, particularly in Room 740. What truly changed the course of our stay, however, was the beach club. We had a bit of confusion initially around seating, and it could easily have remained a frustrating part of the experience. Instead, Joshua, the beach club manager, along with Armaan, another manager there, handled everything with such warmth, professionalism, and genuine care that they completely turned the situation around. Both were absolutely exceptional and delivered the kind of hospitality that genuinely changes how you feel about a stay. Their team, including servers Armani and Luis, was also excellent. Over the next couple of days, they consistently made our family feel welcome, comfortable, and genuinely looked after. They were especially kind and accommodating with our three and a half-year old, which meant a great deal to us as a family traveling together. What stood out was not just friendliness, but the consistency, polish, and attentiveness in how they handled everything. The beach club itself was one of the highlights of the trip, with a fantastic atmosphere, great music, and a team that worked together seamlessly. I have stayed at many beautiful properties around the world, and what always separates a good hotel from a memorable one is the people. That was absolutely the case here. Joshua and Armaan, in particular, deserve the highest praise for how they managed the guest experience and for the standard they set. I also want to recognize the bell desk staff, who were warm, helpful, and welcoming throughout the stay. In addition, the Easter kids club celebration was a wonderful touch and something our family really appreciated. It added a thoughtful, family friendly dimension to the experience and reinforced that there is clearly something very good happening here from a people and service standpoint. The renovation is impressive, but it is the staff that is truly elevating the property. That is what made this stay memorable for us. My only advice to management: please address the AC issue seriously, especially in Room 740. Joshua and Armaan and the rest of the team took what would have been a 3 to 4 star stay and turned it into a 5 star one. Team members like these are the reason guests return."

"For our first stay in Miami Beach, we faced the classic dilemma of choosing the right hotel in a city full of options. After carefully weighing locations and reviews, we placed our trust in the Shelborne — we weren't disappointed The hotel’s design was pure Miami — vibrant, sun-kissed, and every amenity felt thoughtfully curated. What truly set our stay apart, however, was the people. The staff went above and beyond at every turn, making us feel less like guests and more like cherished friends. We were fortunate enough to meet Adina, one manager, whose warmth and attentiveness set the tone for the entire property. Her dedication to ensuring a flawless experience was evident. The pool and beach were simply sublime — made even more magical by Armand and his exceptional team, including Raphael and Lucas, who brought energy, care, and genuine enthusiasm to every moment we spent under the Miami sun. Evenings at the hotel bar were a highlight in their own right — Marc behind the counter made sure of that, mixing brilliant cocktails with the kind of warmth that’s impossible to forget. The Shelborne has earned more than just a glowing review — it has earned our loyalty. We will be recommending it to everyone we know, and we have no doubt we’ll return. It has become our home away from home, our little Miami cocoon."
