PB hotel design editorial

That particular shade of coral pink — applied across a six-storey neoclassical facade on Palm Beach's Hammon Avenue since 1947 — has become so synonymous with a certain vision of Florida glamour that it functions less as a paint color than as a brand identity. The Colony Hotel was designed by architect Rosario Candela, the New York residential specialist whose mastery of prewar apartment planning gave him an instinctive feel for the kind of discreet luxury Palm Beach's winter colony demanded. The building's white-trimmed arched porte-cochère and symmetrical window bays carry the composed confidence of his New York work translated into a subtropical register, softened by bougainvillea and flanked by royal palms. The most recent interiors, overseen by Sarah Wetenhall following her family's acquisition of the property, channel the maximalist Florida Regency tradition with genuine conviction rather than nostalgic pastiche. Guest rooms arrive in either blush-and-gold or celadon-green colorways — scallop-edged headboards upholstered in geometric prints, rattan armchairs, bamboo-finish side tables, and walls saturated to full intensity — a palette that feels closer to Lilly Pulitzer's printmaking sensibility than to cautious resort neutrals. The pool terrace, lined with white iron chaises beneath scallop-fringed umbrellas, sits behind clipped hedgerows with the composed formality of a private estate. The outdoor dining room, its ceiling entirely canopied in trailing greenery hung with iron candelabra chandeliers, transforms dinner into something closer to an enchanted garden than a hotel restaurant.

"We just returned from a long weekend at The Colony, and it continues to exceed our expectations year after year. This was our third April visit, and we loved every minute of our stay. The hotel is absolutely stunning. The signature pink décor is vibrant and stylish, with incredible attention to detail throughout the hotel. The property is perfect for photos, especially on a girls’ getaway, and the service is consistently top-notch. Every team member we encountered was warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive. The level of hospitality truly sets this property apart. One of our favorite perks is the house car, which makes getting around the island easy. A special thank you to Winston, who we’ve had the pleasure of seeing each year. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and always a joy to chat with. At the pool, Phillip took wonderful care of us. He is hardworking, personable, and always attentive. Our room was spotless, and we really appreciated the thoughtful service from Nikki and Claudette, who were both incredibly accommodating. The Colony is such a special property, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit! Lori Nashville, Tennessee"

"The Colony is a beautiful and iconic property with a distinctly Palm Beach feel, and overall we had a good stay. We chose it because it seemed to offer exactly what we were looking for on a trip to the area: a great location, a lively atmosphere, a sense of history, and a more elevated experience than a standard hotel. In a number of ways, it delivered on that. The ambiance is special, the design and character are memorable, and the food and beverage program was genuinely impressive. That said, I do not think the overall experience fully justified the price, and that is what would make me hesitate to stay again. The most disruptive part of our stay was the noise near our room related to housekeeping activity. It appeared there was an adjoining room or service access point nearby, and staff were repeatedly going in and out while cleaning. Each time, the door was slamming forcefully against the frame. This was not a minor background noise or a small inconvenience. It was loud enough to shake and rumble inside our room, and it made it difficult to rest, nap, take a call, or simply relax in the room during those periods. That kind of disruption feels especially noticeable at a hotel in this price range. What made it more frustrating was that it seemed like the kind of thing that should be relatively easy to prevent operationally. I tried to explain it to a staff member in the moment, but there seemed to be a communication barrier, and when I contacted housekeeping directly, I did not get the sense that the concern was really understood or addressed. The other disappointment was the arrival experience. We arrived early because our flight landed ahead of schedule, and we fully understood that check-in was later in the afternoon. We were not expecting immediate access to the room and were simply asking where we could comfortably wait in the meantime. Unfortunately, the interaction at the front desk came across as stiff and somewhat condescending rather than warm or genuinely helpful. The check-in time was repeated multiple times even though we had already acknowledged it, and the conversation felt more procedural than hospitable. At a hotel in this category, tone and authenticity matter, and that part of the experience felt off. So overall, I would describe it as a good stay at a beautiful property, with a lot going for it. The setting, energy, and history are all appealing, and the food and drinks were a real highlight. But for the rate we paid, we expected a higher level of service, more polish, and more consistency in the experience. We have stayed at other luxury properties where that difference is very noticeable. This was not a bad stay, and I do not want to make it sound like it was. But it also did not feel like a particularly strong value. If the pricing were more aligned with the level of service and overall experience, we would consider returning. Otherwise, we would likely explore other options in the area next time."

"Lovely hotel. Impeccable service, fabulous decor and amenities. Location was perfect. My only complaint was that I was only there for one night! Will be back for sure."

"We only stayed here 1 night because our flight was cancelled and had stayed somewhere else on Singer Island the few days before. For this reason, I am so happy it worked out this way. The Colony is such a beautiful and unique hotel. The service was impeccable, food and drinks were fantastic and our overall experience was amazing. Location is also near everything on Worth Ave. We will definitely return!"

"I just had the misfortune of spending the past four nights at The Colony Hotel while attending a conference there. The room, which was microscopic in size, was filthy and in a state befitting a cheap interstate motel, not a legendary property in an upscale resort community that charges approx. $5000 for four nights. I encourage you to view the attached photographs of my room and to judge for yourself. I arrived and unpacked to get ready for a busy trip. Once unpacked, I found a microscopic bathroom that was filthy, covered in hair follicles on the wall, floor, shower, even the tissue dispenser! The tiles were covered in mold. The shower head was caked in rust and limescale. The plaster was crumbling. Even the toilet bowl had a large chunk taken out of it! En route out to meetings, I called the manager, who offered to clean the room, but upon my afternoon return I found that there were still so many hair follicles covering the floor of the shower that I had to wipe it out myself with toilet paper. Again, I called the manager, and was told that "someone would check it out during evening service". I was told I could change rooms at the same level, but there was no time, and I should not have to change rooms to avoid grime in a hotel where my average night's stay was north of $1200. In my photos, you will see furniture that is gouged and worn, wallpaper peeling, curtains that are falling off the track, mismatching paint streaks, hairs stuck to walls, plaster crumbling, corroded door hardware, mold on the shower tile, filthy tile, drains that haven't been properly cleaned (perhaps for years, especially as mine left standing water when showering), a showerhead so disgusting one doesn't even want to touch it, and the shelves where towels were places covered in mould and filth. My entire visit was made so unpleasant by The Colony. I dreaded every moment I had to spend in that room and felt unclean the entire trip. I asked others at the conference if their rooms had similar issues and was told that they did. I hope that they weren't as severe, but gathering from the scraped floors of the hotel dining room that hadn't been attended to for ages, I imagine they were. Management's response was inadequate and insincere to say the least. Eventually, I gave up. Via telephone, I received insincere, monotone apologies and was offered a mere $150 (3% of my bill!) restaurant credit in a hotel that was so revolting and like a bad interstate motel, that's not much less than what I should have paid for the entire stay. My conclusion was that the once legendary Colony Hotel has been left to ruin, painted and papered over with vibrant colors meant to distract visitors from a crumbling infrastructure so that they owners could extract every last penny from its former reputation and a great location. I won't be returning."
