PB hotel design editorial

Longboat Key's barrier island had not seen a development of this scale in fifty years when the St. Regis Longboat Key Resort opened in August 2024, its five floors and 168 rooms spread across eighteen Gulf-front acres designed by 10 Design. The massing is confidently modern — white concrete and full-height glazing stepping back from a broad white-sand beach, a private pier extending straight into the luminous turquoise shallows — without the pastiche Mediterranean detailing that dominates so much of Florida's resort coast. From the air, the complex reads as a series of horizontal planes interspersed with palm-threaded pool terraces and lawn, the geometry softened by landscape rather than ornament. Inside, HBA Miami and Dutch East Design drew on Sarasota's performing arts and circus legacy for an interior programme that grows more theatrical as you move deeper into the building. The guest rooms keep things quieter: wide-plank oak floors, upholstered headboards in textured grey, white marble side tables, floor-to-ceiling sliders framing the Gulf on three sides. The real drama belongs to the bar, where warm walnut panelling curves up into a sculptural coffered ceiling, a fireplace surround in heavily veined black-and-white marble dominates one wall, and brass-footed stools line a grey marble counter while a mosaic floor sets the whole room glittering. The pool terrace restaurants are more relaxed, shaded by articulated white pergolas and furnished with rattan seating, the whole arrangement oriented to catch the slow Gulf light.

"This hotel is absolute beautiful. No expense was spared. Top of the line finishes throughout. The ocean water is so blue. Our room was clean and spacious, with a spectacular view. Food and service at Riva (Italian) was excellent. Only complaints: LOTS of children that scream and cry. The sand on the beach isn’t soft. The beach hosts drive around in a gas powered golf cart that is extremely loud. It is unnecessary, as they can easily walk the beach to retrieve used towels, etc. Maybe switch to an electric cart if truly necessary. Lastly, the plumbing smells, but I am not sure that can be corrected."

"Key take-away: This should be your hands down top choice for staying anywhere near or in the Sarasota area. I am a lifetime platinum Bonvoy member and have stayed all across the world, the St. Regis Longboat Key will amaze you and is the hands down best in the area. We just finished an amazing 2 day visit last week celebrating our anniversary and we typically stay at the Ritz in Sarasota. This was our first visit to the St. Regis, and my was it a memorable one and we do plan to return next year. A couple comments and what made this a remarkable visit: 1) Staff: I have never stayed at a hotel where every staff member I came across was so genuinely ecstatic about working for the hotel. From the beach butler staff, to the electrician I met by chance on the pier, to the wait staff, pool staff and Pool manager we met. Beyond exceptional service, I was astounded by how genuinely happy and proud each individual was to be part of the St. Regis Longboat Key team. I have never come across it before, and its clear this element is part of the secret sauce of the hotel. It came out every single day we stayed at the hotel and with every staff member we met. 2) Saltwater Lagoon: A hidden gem of the hotel. Just walking along the edges and viewing the fish from the see through lower glass allows guests to feel a part of the coastal ecosystem and it brings about such peace on a vacation. You will not find this anywhere else but the St. Regis. 3) Privacy: For being in a hotel environment the layout of the beach chairs, pool, lobby, restaurants was "spatially" exceptional as well. Each location was thoughtfully designed to accommodate the space, and never once did it feel like seating was too tight where guests felt too close to one another. At Oshen especially, you could get a view of the sunset and also enjoy your dinner with your family. Same thing in the lobby, a good amount of people listening to the live music and watching the world cup, but plenty of space for guests to relax and have a private conversation. So exceptional design of the hotel and guest areas."

"*Extremely* poor showing for a St. Regis property. The hard product feels somewhere in-between - what I'd call - a "typical" St. Regis and your average Westin (and I've spent many nights with both). This was very surprising to me considering the hotel is still only ~2 years old and shouldn't be due for any sorts of renovations or upgrades. Room views are very average for a majority of guests (we were "upgraded" to an Oceanfront room, which actually had us facing the roof of a pool bar - and notably not the beach) and room features & amenities do not feel up to the standard I would have expected. Especially noteworthy for us: the lazy river pool is quite dirty- sediment or something else makes it rather murky and we often saw trash floating around when we swam there. But where this hotel *really* falls short is service. It feels as if most of the staff here skipped the "St. Regis training." Tone is way off, apathy is abundant (you will not find anyone here that wants to do more than the absolute bare minimum), and management are nowhere to be found. I want to make it very clear that you will not *feel* like you're at a luxury property if you stay here; you certainly will not be treated as such. Expect very slow service, zero acknowledgement or accountability for poor product (e.g., melted drinks or cold food), blatantly rude communications (our butler didn't even reach out to us during our stay!), fictitious charges on your folio (check closely after checkout), etc. The atmosphere they've created at this property feels quite amateur and unprofessional. I have almost 1100 nights with Marriott in the last decade and my night here falls somewhere within the lowest quartile in almost every category you can think of; you will only enjoy your stay here with extremely low expectations of what a St. Regis should be (and is elsewhere). Otherwise, try Bal Harbour."

"This was our first time staying at a St. Regis property. This property was absolutely gorgeous and so well maintained. The service we received from all employees was impeccable and certainly set this brand at a high level in regards to customer service. We celebrated my birthday during the stay and the resort made it a memorable experience. A nice fruit platter was delivered to us poolside with a Happy Birthday message. A very good small cake and bottle of prosecco on ice with a birthday cards was also delivered to our room. We had dinner at CW Prime on my birthday and also received 2 complimentary glasses of prosecco at the end of our dinner. We spent a lot of time poolside and all of the concierge and butler team provided excellent service and were very accommodating. Having the butler box and small coolers with chilled water was a plus. One team member that went over and above at the pool to assist us was Zia. She was amazing and so very helpful with getting our chairs ready and checking on us each day. She made sure to stop by to greet us and have conversation with us each day we were poolside even if she was working at another pool location. She surprised me with a birthday gift. John Jordan Smelley (concierge) was also very helpful and remembered our names each time we saw him. Honestly I can't say enough about the entire resort and staff. It was an amazing vacation and we look forward to coming back sometime in the future. Thanks so much St. Regis Longboat Key."

"We were here last October for a five night stay, now it's only a four night stay at this beautiful ocean front resort. Beautiful views of the pools, lazy river and the beach and ocean from our room 410. As usual, clean, bright, comfy and nicely appointed with all the amenities. Great high pressure showers and a large bathtub also. Close by to the smaller elevator that lead us to the pool area. We stayed at the adult pool and got nice comfy lounge chairs everyday. Charles, who was the pool attendant in charge, gave us great service there. Breakfast every morning at Riva which was awesome for great food and service. Big shout out to Aaron, who remembered me for my three well done sunny side up eggs!!! Dinner at CW Prime for our last night for awesome steaks and seafood apps and splendid service from Jeffery. We dined at local restaurants on the island and back on the main land. Great bar and dining area for small plates of sushi and awesome sunset spot called Oshen. Must see this outdoor covered bar for great photo op of the sun settling on the Gulf of America!!! The Butler service was outstanding!!! What ever you needed they were there 24/7. Great lobby bar for casual drinks before and after dinner where beautiful music is played on the grand piano by Joe Michals. And also for the first time a live 5 piece band making beautiful music through out the main lobby. We also used their gym for a quick workout and cardio everyday with great equipment. Overall, beautiful property, great friendly service from everyone working there, the property is dog friendly, we saw many dogs there. Attractive lobby bar with many seats. Make sure you are there by 6:00pm where they have their traditional Champagne Sabrage ceremony by opening a bottle with a saber, with a small explanation of the historic celebration and a toast afterwards. We used their free shuttle service, a nice Bentley SUV, to St. Armand's Circle for dinner and back when available. Frazier was a great driver from England. A nice gratuity is recommended. My wife and I had a great time!!! We will be back!!!🏖️🏖️🏖️🌅🌅🌅"
