PB hotel design editorial

For decades, the building at 789 Ponce de Leon Avenue was better known for its basement than its guest rooms — home to the Clermont Lounge, Atlanta's oldest strip club, which kept operating even as the hotel above it fell into disrepair. That tension between notoriety and reinvention became the starting point for Hotel Clermont when Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants completed its restoration of the 1924 brick structure in 2018, working with local architect Rule Joy Trammell + Rubio and interior designer Stacie Cokinos to return the five-story building's 94 rooms to active use without erasing the strangeness that made the address legendary. The interiors take their cues from a certain strain of knowing, maximalist Americana — the lobby furnished with rattan peacock chairs, boldly printed palm-leaf drapery, bouclé ottomans, and brass flea-market floor lamps arranged around a layered Persian rug, the whole room carrying the atmosphere of a well-traveled collector's sitting room rather than a corporate hospitality brief. Guest rooms counter that eclecticism with a tighter palette: tufted velvet headboards in forest green or chartreuse, platform beds set against deep teal floral carpeting, walnut nightstands with brass hardware, and original figurative watercolors hung on brass chains. The ground-floor restaurant extends the warmth through tufted leather banquettes, bentwood cane chairs, coffered plaster ceilings, and globe pendant lighting — a mid-century brasserie vernacular that suits the neighborhood's Ponce City Market-era renewal without genuflecting to it.

"Hotel Clermont is a classy chic yet non pretentious gem of a hotel in an excellent location for all you want or need to do in Atlanta. Can't wait to stay there again. The staff is available, accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable. Tiny Lou's is wonderfully intimate and the rooftop bar is the best view of the Atlanta skyline in the city."

"Pros: Very convenient location to Ponce City Market, the Beltline, Freedom Park Trail, and walking distance to nice neighborhoods like Virginia-Highland, Little Five Points. Lots of good food options within walking distance up and down Ponce. Transit accessible via bus to Midtown. Excellent design all around, from the lobby to the other common spaces, such as the bar and restaurant. My room was spacious and filled with light during the day with a comfortable bed, good-sized bathroom with a nice walk-in shower. It was great to have a tea kettle and pour-over coffee available in the room, too. The front desk staff was exceptionally friendly, always available to answer questions and was quick to have things like extra towels and coffee to the room. Honestly, they couldn't have been nicer. Cons: (Well, really just one.) This is not a place to stay if you want a good night's sleep. The noise levels, either from the Clermont Lounge downstairs, the lobby bar/restaurant, or the rooftop bar, was incessant and pounding, well into the wee hours of the morning. It's never a good sign when you walk into your room and see a white noise machine and two sets of earplugs. Even with the white noise machine, I could ear every bass beat and feel it too. Needless to say, was not my freshest and most well rested each day. This is probably a fun place to stay if you're only here for one or two nights and are looking to party, but if you're looking to relax after a nice day of exploring Atlanta or prefer a quieter scene, stay somewhere else. Truly disappointing in that regard, as I so appreciated everything else about the hotel. It otherwise would be an excellent alternative to chain hotels or places in far less interesting locations."

"Location was good. Male front desk receptionist was kind and tried to make up for crappy treatment I received earlier during check-in process. Issues checking in... Difficulty checking in, valet service confusion, Was requested to leave before I could check-in. Was asked "why are you here?" question prior to check-in. Was initially told that check-in was located in rear of building ?!? front desk female unfriendly during check-in process. Front desk female not very knowledgeable about valet service details. Also seemed annoyed that I asked questions during check-in process. Was short with me during check-in, took clipboard away from me twice before I actually had an opportunity to read the information and sign my name. Many unmarked areas. Front lobby entrance should be better marked to help direct cars to valet section or check-in parking. A simple sign with arrows or marking on pavement would help. I also had a negative experience with an overly concerned security guard on the roof. I unintentionally walked into a "out of bounds" area of the roof. I was informed that the area was for employees only. Again, no barrier, no signs. I felt more like an inmate at the hotel instead of being a PAYING guest. Not Fun. Unlikely to be back. Was unaware of the stripclub in the basement. Explains a lot. We are Film industry creatives, was in town on business for Los Angeles film screening with producers, directors from several studios of note."
