PB hotel design editorial

Spread across a wooded peninsula on Georgia's Lake Oconee, where longleaf pines thin to reveal wide water views in almost every direction, The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee makes a persuasive case that resort architecture need not compete with its landscape to command attention. The four-story main lodge, clad in warm buff stone and topped with steep slate-colored roofs, steps back from the shoreline in a massing that suggests a grand Piedmont estate assembled over generations rather than built at once. Opened in 2001 as part of the Reynolds Plantation development, the property carries 251 rooms and suites arranged to capture lake orientation wherever possible, French doors opening onto balconies that frame the water through stands of mature pine. Inside, two distinct interior registers operate across the property. The grander lake-view rooms work in a palette of cool silver and charcoal — upholstered panel headboards, wide-plank hardwood floors, botanical prints in dark frames, floral accent chairs that read closer to an Atlanta townhouse than a conventional hotel room. The softer cottages shift toward warm cream and sand, tufted leather headboards, plantation shutters filtering afternoon light, and loose watercolor paintings of rowing skiffs hung above the bed. Outdoors, a flagstone terrace restaurant cantilevered over the water deploys tensile shade sails and heavy timber pavilions with arched bracing, the stonework carrying the same rustic register as the lodge walls above — the whole compound settling into its Georgia woodland setting with unhurried confidence.

"Absolutely spectacular resort. Beautiful amenities, most accommodating staff I have ever encountered at a resort, beautiful rooms (but the room lighting is terrible) and great food - it’s a perfect resort in almost every aspect. But there are a few negatives. 1) It’s very expensive and for the price you would expect breakfast to be included. It is not. 2) Very tacky signs in the room warning that you will be billed $80 if you leave with the small bottle of shampoo. 3) Constant reminders to tip the housekeeping staff. Anyone going to a resort like that already knows that it’s expected. Perhaps if they paid a living wage they would not need to do that. 3) Seems like they do not restock the mini bar between guests. Someone I was traveling with had a fully stocked bar while my room was about half empty. I had to go to the front desk to make sure they did not charge me for the missing items. 5) No welcome amenity for gold Bonvoy members. The negatives made this a 4 star review instead of a 5 star review - but all in all this is a very special place. I understand why people return to it."

"Sumptuous resort set in large vacation lake/golf district 90 minutes from Atlanta. Full range of resort amenities; impeccably cared-for property; staff are outgoing and attentive. Menus are diverse and innovative -- although vegetarian options are limited -- and prepared very well indeed. The hotel building has excellent accessibility; golf carts are available to help with movement over the property. I wish there was better attention to sustainability."

"Do you love screaming children and barking dogs while on vacation? Then this is the perfect place for you! This Ritz is in a great location with excellent amenities and a helpful staff. However, they unfortunately were all ruined by constant issues with noise. The room next to us had a frequently unattended dog that continuously barked the entire visit (including through the night). Our nice Saturday evening dinner at Amore del Lago had multiple groups of children screaming and running around unsupervised. Young children were allowed in the adult pool (supposed to be ages 12 and up). Children were allowed to sit up at Gabby's Bar area (supposed to be adults only). I realize a lot of these issues should in an ideal world fall on the actual parents. However, it really does ruin the experience for other guests who are paying a lot of money to visit. If you're a large family with youngsters & dogs this is probably a fine place for vacation. Otherwise, I would stay away."

"We had an awesome experience! The hotel and views and magnificent. The rooms were all very clean. And both restaurants that we dined at were good. I’d give a special shoutout to the Italian restaurant—-the breakfast was delicious with a great variety of options and the staff there was probably the best staff at the hotel."

"Unlike wine, the Ritz Oconee is not getting better with age. Don’t be fooled by the Ritz flag….this is really a sub-par low end Marriott. For $800 per night, you should expect good accommodations, great food, and hospitality that goes above and beyond. Our dinner was inedible (not to mention 4 incorrect entrees coming out). The hot tub in the men’s spa doesn’t work, and don’t even ask for turn down. I’ve included a picture of our turn down. I hope you find it as humorous as we did. As a Titsnium Elite Bonvoy member you should get some extra amenities. Not here!! My advice…go elsewhere. You will thank me."
