PB hotel design editorial

When it opened on Waikiki Beach in 1901, the white-columned Colonial Revival building designed by Oliver G. Traphagen was the first hotel on what would become one of the most densely developed shorelines on earth — a fact that gives the Moana Surfrider an authority no amount of subsequent construction can quite diminish. The symmetrical facade, with its hipped dormers, wraparound verandas, and central cupola flying the American flag, presents as a piece of early twentieth-century confidence in Hawaii's tourist future, and the building has been a registered Historic Landmark since 1972. The Banyan Wing and Tower additions brought the property to around 791 rooms across its three connected structures, but it is the original 1901 building — the Banyan Wing, named for the enormous tree shading its open-air terrace — that gives the hotel its character. The interiors navigate a familiar tension between historic fabric and contemporary resort expectation. Rooms in the original building carry white-painted louvered shutters and herringbone wood floors on the veranda level, wicker furniture and ceiling fans maintaining the Colonial register. The images reveal guest rooms in the tower addition fitted with upholstered headboards in teal and warm grey, textured wallcoverings, and rattan-detailed case goods — a Pacific-inflected palette that gestures toward the building's heritage without replicating it. The pool terrace, framed by tall coconut palms reflected in turquoise-lit water at dusk, shares that same quality: more atmosphere than decoration, earned rather than manufactured.

"First time in Hawaii, and I've lived the best experience in this hotel. The building is beautiful, it has the best location, and the staff is the best! Shoutout to Ken (beach/pool server), Eva (breakfast server), Haya (beach), Keola (Front Desk) Koji (server) and Louis. All of them have a great attitude, and made my stay unforgettable. I can't wait to go back!"

"The Waikiki ocean view room was breathtaking Waking up to the stunning blue ocean and relaxing on the balcony while enjoying the beautiful scenery felt like a dream. The views were truly spectacular both day and night. The afternoon tea experience was elegant, delicious, and incredibly romantic. Enjoying tea and desserts with such a gorgeous Waikiki backdrop created one of the most memorable moments of our trip. This hotel is truly a perfect destination for both relaxation and romance. The atmosphere was beautiful and ideal for creating special memories. Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or simply looking for a perfect vacation getaway, this place is absolutely amazing."

"We stayed in the tower with a view of Diamond Head and the ocean. The room was clean and comfortable. We were on the 16th floor with a great view of the beach and the surfers. The mini fridge in the room chilled down the water we received every day and kept our beverages cold. The maid was not leaving us regular coffee for some reason. We called and had some delivered a couple of days and they apologized that we were not getting what we wanted. We ended up leaving a note that we wanted 4 regular coffee pods and 4 waters. This helped. The last full day the maid didn’t come to clean our room. The maids were leaving for the day and my husband let them know our room hadn’t been cleaned yet. Someone came shortly to clean the room. Overall, we were pleased with the room. The staff were pleasant and brought what we needed when we asked."

"We stayed at this resort for a combined 50th birthday and anniversary trip. The property is beautiful and well maintained. The beds were comfortable and even the pillows weren't too bad, though I always bring a travel pillow now. We stayed in the Banyan Wing which is in the historic part of the hotel. I found the room mostly quiet. I didn't hear anyone in neighboring rooms. An occasional door slamming in the hall. Sometimes, at night, you'd hear a loud car but it never really bothered me. We use a travel white noise machine everywhere we go and find that eliminates any noise concerns at night. The room was in good repair. There were a few minor issues like a cabinet that appeared slightly water damaged and the bottom of the glass on the shower looked as if it needed better cleaning. The room was cool and shutters on windows provided enough darkness at night. The staff was all very friendly and attentive. Housekeeping was prompt. They were frequently done before lunch. The breakfast buffet was ok. I've had some pretty excellent buffets at the Grand Hyatt Kauai and even in various hotels in Singapore and Hong Kong. By comparison this buffet was pretty limited in selection. Especially for the price of over $50 a person. The food was also just alright. I enjoy eggs benedict and was excited to see them, but the eggs were basically hardboiled, and not very good. The pancakes and waffles were better. The beach bar made a decent drinks (we only drink mocktails or virgin drinks though). The onsite coffee shop is busy, but good! Very convenient. We didn't use the pool. We sat by it for awhile and it seems clean and well maintained. It is hard to get a chair though. People put towels on seats to reserve them and you have to either get up early or go out after 5 to get a seat. Rentals of beach cabanas and lounges get booked fast. So book early. Beach access is fantastic. Easy access to a beach that is calm enough to swim. Not much for snorkeling though. I did see a few little fish while swimming, but not a lot. The beach was busy, but we were able to find a spot. Lots of shopping in the hotel and very nearby. Very walkable area. Lots of good food options. The trolley stops are nearby as well if you want to use that to tour around. We used the concierge desk to book a tour and it was easy and convenient, but marked up quite a bit above having just done it ourselves. As mentioned we were celebrating a 50th birthday and an anniversary during the stay which we mentioned at check in. We were given a voucher for two free drinks. I Thought that was a bit cheap given the status of the hotel and the fact we're awards members - but it was also mother's day weekend and perhaps they didn't have any upgrades or better options to offer. Fair enough. Over all, we enjoyed our stay enough we plan to come back again next year and maybe stay in the more modern tower instead!"

"Spent only one night and it was enough. My room was on the 4th floor overlooking Duke’s restaurant. They are banging pots, as in scraping food into the dumpster literally from 5:15AM to just past midnight. There’s constant music but nothing tropical and you just hear the noise not the music. Just enough to ruin sound of the waves. #2~I was enjoying the patio in the Am, only to be startled by 3 hotel employees on the balcony next to me. They said they were trying to catch someone smoking pot……what? #3~ Checkout at 11, turn shower on at 9:30. The pipe at the shower head is out of the wall and 1/2 the water coming out is going back into the wall. Called front desk , they did have a nearby room I could use to get ready….if I could just come down to the front desk. Spot was good, price was good, hopefully I can save someone from a room facing or nearby Duke’s and review will have been worth writing"
