PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the mid-century concrete fabric of Waikiki's Lewers Street, a ten-storey slab that once housed a modest apartment hotel was reborn in 2016 as the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club — a renovation that treated the original building's postwar bones not as a problem to conceal but as raw material to work with. The project, led by design agency Fogged In Foundry in collaboration with local firm AHL, drew on Hawaii's golden age of modernism: the angled colonnade columns visible at pool level, the perforated breeze-block screens, and the tongue-and-groove timber ceilings all carry a lineage traceable to the Case Study era filtered through Pacific sensibility. The 112 guest rooms layer teal-and-white tropical-print headboards against woven grasscloth wall panels, low-slung platform beds in warm-toned timber, and sliding barn-style doors fitted with frosted glass that reveal bathrooms tiled in graphic starburst cement patterns. Ceiling fans with swept mahogany-finish blades underscore the deliberately unhurried atmosphere. At pool level, the communal spaces mix Eames wire side chairs with chevron-upholstered lounge seating in aqua and yellow-framed occasional tables — a palette that lands somewhere between vintage Polynesia and 1960s Southern California surf culture. The pool itself, oval and emblazoned with a Wish You Were Here tile inscription, functions less as amenity than as graphic statement — the whole property's argument, made visible from above.

"My wife and I celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary here. Sheppard and the staff were outstanding they were always friendly and welcoming. We loved we could bring our pet and celebrate as a family. The pool side atmosphere cannot be beat we spent the entire day lounging downstairs. The location is within walking distance of everything that we enjoy in Waikiki. We love the experience so much that we booked another stay in November. Please let Sheppard know that the service was excellent."

"Lovely spacious room. Comfortable bed. The fridge and safe in the room and the ice machine and water stations downstairs were very much apprecciated. Sofa in our room was old and very uncomfortable and the cushions on it were old, and worn and need replacing. The toilet was excellent and a constant source of fun for us - never seen one like that before. The TV was way too complicated to figure out. General cleanliness of the hotel was average, eg. our balcony was covered in bird poo and the balcony door frames all stained. The corridoors quite dirty. Lovely pool and lounge area but the sunloungers were super uncomfortable! Great to have coffee 'on tap'. The bartender could not pull a pint to save his life so decided to drink elsewhere....Had a welcome bottle of bubbly for my husband's birthday which was a greatly apprecciated, thank you. We would stay again, as loved the location, friendly staff, cosyness of the place and the overall ambiance. Nice to have so many dogs around! Do tell people that parking on Ala Wai Boulevard is free. Just have to watch out Mon & Fri am restriction. We managed to park there everynight and that saved us a fortune."

"The hotel is very dog and kid friendly. You’ll see and hopefully pet, lots of dogs. That was the highlight of our stay. Sometimes they make noise but if you’re used to pups, it’s not bothersome. Very kid friendly as well. Again, you may hear the musical sounds of a wee one but again, if you’re used to kids then it’s great. The bed was nice, the linens were crisp. The staff was great. As was the tall bartender. We stayed because we loved the look of the pool but never went in. Not enough time in the day. We did borrow 2 towels every time we went to the beach or snorkel tour. Just return them to the dirty towel receptacle. They have a water machine too, we drank probably gallons of water. Very nice. The balcony was fun. We had to store our bags post check out and they keep them in a safe room. It’s a great location. We never had to walk more than 5-10 mins to a tour pick up location. We did not rent a car. Everything was easily accessible by foot. Stay here if you have dogs or kids. Stay here if you want to pet like 20 dogs. The. Best. Thing. Ever!!"

"This is our 4th visit to the Surfjack and it continues to be our favorite place to stay in Waikiki. The cost of the room is an incredible value, while still providing a cute, retro MCM vibe. There is always plenty going on at the Surfjack and is a wonderful option for families with children. While we haven’t brought any of our pets along for vacation, we are a family of dog lovers, so getting to see so many pooches is definitely a plus! The hotel is not beachside, but you are a 5-10 minute walk from the beach/major shopping center (and honestly, sometimes it’s nice to not be in the middle of the all the crowds!) The entire staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. You can tell that the staff has worked hard to great a certain atmosphere and you can feel it in every aspect of your stay. I can’t recommend the Surfjack enough when visiting Waikiki!"
