PB hotel design editorial

When Laurance Rockefeller commissioned architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to build a resort on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii's Big Island in 1965, the brief was unlike anything the firm had tackled before: create a hotel that would feel inseparable from its volcanic landscape rather than imposed upon it. The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel opened that same year on a crescent of white sand at Kauna'oa Bay, its six-story concrete frame oriented to catch the prevailing trade winds through open-air corridors — a passive cooling strategy that made air conditioning unnecessary and kept the building in constant conversation with the Pacific. Rockefeller's personal involvement extended to acquiring one of the finest collections of Asian and Pacific art assembled within a hotel, with over 1,600 pieces woven into the public spaces and gardens rather than installed as afterthought decoration. The 252 rooms carry their mid-century bones gracefully into the present — warm koa-toned millwork wrapping the headboards and desk units, large-format pale tile underfoot, and sliding glass doors opening onto generous lanais that frame either the turquoise arc of the bay or the green sweep of the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed golf course climbing toward Mauna Kea's slopes. The color language throughout — terracotta orange in the monstera-printed bench upholstery and bolster cushions, lime-cushioned wicker at the clifftop restaurant terrace, flagstone paving weathered to the tone of the surrounding lava field — gives the property a coherence that most subsequent Hawaiian resorts have reached for without quite achieving.

"Here’s a clean, paste‑ready follow‑up review with restrained sarcasm and a consistent 1‑star tone, written as if it stands on its own but clearly follows your original post: Follow‑Up Review Unfortunately, our experience managed to get even worse on day two. Our morning began shortly after 7:00 AM with the unmistakable sound of power tools and active construction — less than 50 yards from our room. Nothing says “relaxing vacation” quite like being jolted awake by industrial noise. I ultimately decided to lean into it and get up early on my vacation, since sleep clearly wasn’t on the agenda. We went downstairs for the coffee service, which is advertised as running until 8:00 AM. At approximately 7:45 AM, we found a young staff member actively removing the coffee station. When I politely asked if I could please have a cup of coffee, she appeared visibly annoyed and put out that she had to put the coffee back out. Every step of the interaction felt inconvenient to her, as though providing basic service was an unreasonable request. Between the early‑morning construction noise and consistently poor, indifferent service, it has become clear that guest experience is simply not a priority here. The lack of care, urgency, or accountability from staff has been striking. This follow‑up is sadly consistent with our first review — the service remains terrible, and the overall experience continues to disappoint."

"Just checked in yesterday to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. What a major disappointment, especially given its reputation and the premium prices being charged. While the setting and beach are undeniably beautiful, that is where the positives largely end. The rooms and bathrooms especially are very small, more like a relic of a bygone era than a luxury resort. While the rooms have been updated, the finishes, and overall condition of the common areas do not come close to justifying the nightly rates. It feels old, worn, and past its prime. For the price point, basic expectations around room quality, comfort, and modern amenities were simply not met. Service was equally underwhelming. Nothing was outright bad, but nothing stood out either. Staff interactions were unremarkable and lacked the warmth, attentiveness, and proactive hospitality you would expect from a resort positioning itself at this level. There was no sense of being valued as a guest, and certainly no feeling that the experience matched the cost. In short, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel trades heavily on its location and history, but those alone are not enough. With so many excellent options in Hawaii, it’s hard to justify paying luxury prices for an experience that feels outdated and average at best. Feeling disappointed with this booking and would not return unless there were significant improvements to both the rooms and overall service."

"It’s our new favorite! We were sad to leave after 6 nights. The grounds are beautiful, loved the amazing beach, the new adult infinity pool and our spacious, renovated room. Perfect for relaxing and unwinding. The resort feels very secluded but is drivable to VNP, Akaka Falls, Waipai’o Valley and other sites around the Island. We can’t say enough good things about the dedicated, kind and hard working staff. Especially the ladies at the Front Desk and Ledie in the Front Office. They went above and beyond. We were truly impressed. Housekeeping was also on point. Great recognition of Platinum Bonvoy status with an upgrade to a gorgeous deluxe golf view room with 2 balconies and a huge walk-in closet, a welcome treat/departure gift and a late check out. They also comped the hot and cold Manta breakfast buffet, instead of just cold, due to the spa construction. We hope that they keep offering this even after the spa is open. We already miss those delicious breakfasts out on the Manta lanai. Wonderful service, gorgeous view, perfect for whale watching. Any issues? Yep. We had the worst waiter ever at the Copper Bar, a sickening chicken enchilada dinner from Hau Tree, and a constant engine hum on our balcony, maybe from the golf restaurant exhaust fans? We got over it. The days flew by riding the waves, snorkeling, walking the Ala Kahakai trail, lounging at the adult pool and hot tub. Sunset felt like a celebration and it was very cool to see the manta rays swimming at Manta Point after dark. Mauna Kea really felt like our home in Paradise. We even used the free laundry machines mid-stay. We should have stayed longer! A+"
